Pat Conroy’s New York Times–bestselling Southern drama about the destructive repercussions of keeping an unspeakable family secret Tom Wingo has lost his job, and is on the verge of losing his marriage, when he learns that his twin sister, Savannah, has attempted suicide again. At the behest of Savannah’s psychiatrist, Dr. Susan Lowenstein, Tom reluctantly leaves his home in South Carolina to … home in South Carolina to travel to New York City and aid in his sister’s therapy.
As Tom’s relationship with Susan deepens, he reveals to her the turbulent history of the Wingo family, and exposes the truth behind the fateful day that changed their lives forever.
Drawing richly from the author’s own troubled upbringing, The Prince of Tides is a sweeping, powerful novel of unlocking the past to overcome the darkest of personal demons—it’s Pat Conroy at his very best.

A great book, in turn funny and tender, heartbreaking and uplifting. Through wounded humor, it exposes the complexities and tragedies of family dynamics. But despite all the twists and turns, trials and tribulations, hope persists, forever lurking around every corner. The ending is beautiful.
Very interesting! Pat Conroy is a wonderful writer. Based on his own experiences.
Many years since I read it, but it did leave me with some insights into people
One of my favorites.
I was riveted by page 10. Pat Conroy’s description of his beloved Carolinas was a perfect backdrop to this story of growing up in a dysfunctional family where alcohol and madness play no small part.
A classic. Beautifully written!
I love every Pat Conroy book I’ve read. This is one of my favorites! I kept a can of Alpo in my pantry for years after reading it! ; )
Pat Conroy is one of my favorite authors because his writing is so beautiful. It just flows. If I were ever to write a book, I’m afraid I would compare it to his and consider myself a failure. There is no way I could come close.
Moments stay with you long after the book is finished.
I read this book as fast as I could because I had to know how these miserable people worked out their different issues. Who would forgive? Who would heal? Who would drudge through the rest of life? Who would experience true love?
A classic that left a mark on me the first time I read. Need to read it again soon.
Drawing on his own personal background, Pat Conroy has constructed a masterpiece of fiction. Tom Wingo is a wonderful complex chatracter. In fact all of the characters in this novel are very well drawn and rounded. The plot is intricate and thorough, and heatbreaking. Just what you;d want in ficiton! I think perhaps this novel is one of the best …
Read. This book years ago — loved it. May even read it again!
One of the best books I’ve ever read
This is one of my favorite books of all time. Pat Conroy writes like Renoir paints. His words present images that stay with you long after you read. The story is rich not only in imagery but in feeling and suspense and he gets to the heart of each character. This is the kind of book you wanna read slowly so that you can ingest and enjoy each word …
Pat Conroy is an extraordinarily gifted storyteller, and this book is among his best.
One of the best books I have read in a long time. I am from the South, and I appreciated a novel that reflected, in a small way, what I grew up around. Superbly written, about halfway through I bought a copy for my daughter as well.
One of my favorites
This has always been one of my favorite books of all time!
What an interesting and intriguing story. The main character tells his story of his struggles growing up in a dysfunctional family, and the effects on himself and his siblings.
One of the best books I’ve ever read. Huge fan of Pat Conroy, Lord rest his soul.
