Pat Conroy’s New York Times–bestselling Southern drama about the destructive repercussions of keeping an unspeakable family secret Tom Wingo has lost his job, and is on the verge of losing his marriage, when he learns that his twin sister, Savannah, has attempted suicide again. At the behest of Savannah’s psychiatrist, Dr. Susan Lowenstein, Tom reluctantly leaves his home in South Carolina to … home in South Carolina to travel to New York City and aid in his sister’s therapy.
As Tom’s relationship with Susan deepens, he reveals to her the turbulent history of the Wingo family, and exposes the truth behind the fateful day that changed their lives forever.
Drawing richly from the author’s own troubled upbringing, The Prince of Tides is a sweeping, powerful novel of unlocking the past to overcome the darkest of personal demons—it’s Pat Conroy at his very best.

instense story, beautifully written.
One of the most outstanding books I have ever read. Pat Conroy had the ability to make you see, feel and understand his characters in all their flawed glory. This one will stay with you for a long, long time. I have read it several times and never tire of the story and especially Tom Wingo.
While reading is my favorite thing to do, ordinarily, when I’m through with a book, I move on quickly. However, I reread this one immediately upon completing it the first time — I couldn’t let go of the characters. Conroy’s other books are also character driven — I loved them all. My favorite genre is Dysfunctional Families, and sadly, Conroy …
One of my all-time favorite books
The characters are wonderfully drawn, and you fall under the spell of Pat Conroy’s writing. Sometimes I wonder if I had witnessed the episodes; his writing makes you see so plainly. I have read Prince of Tides many times, and still come upon surprises.
Other favorites by Pat Conroy are “The Water is Wide”, and …
Like they say….the book is so much better than the movie….and I loved the movie.
A classic novel. Well written and difficult to put down. Sometimes dark and tragic but with great word use and metaphors. Left an impression on me even weeks after reading it. Sometimes a little too violent and way too much use of vulgar language than needed to get the point across.
Prince of Tides is a story about a psychological journey of a family. It is well-written with basically a happy ending. It is a great dive into the world of psychology and how family incidents effect our lives.
The Prince of Tides – read it years ago, reread it this week, it seemed different from how I remembered it.
The first book I read by Pat Conroy, my all time favorite author. His descriptive style is hauntingly beautiful and left me in grief and mourning at the last chapter knowing I was coming to an end of a beautiful story that touched my soul!
My favorite Arthur love love his books
I remember that I like him, but I do not remember anything about the book..it’s been over 50 years….
You can almost feel the tides shifting as you read this book. He is a master of the English language.
Definitely one of the best writers I have read. Poet of the south.
Most intense book I’ve ever read. Conroy is one spectacular writer. Don’t miss this novel!
I do remember when The Prince of Tides was published that the public received it wide open arms. I just tried to read it and found it so tiresome and lackluster that I quit somewhere around a third in.
The characters didn’t speak to me nor the plot, although I have spent summers in the same locations, long before Isle of Palms and Mount Pleasant …
I read this book a long time ago but I plan to read it again soon. It is wonderful, Pat Conroy is an American treasure – his books about the south and Charleston SC in particular are haunting and beautiful. He is a master at words and at dialogue. His characters are alive and you live each moment with them. This is one of my top 10 favorite …
One of my top ten books. Love this author, especially “The Water Is Wide,” His other books are also among my favorites.
I read this book several years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.
