She’s lost her memory. He’s lost his heart. Can they find their happily ever after in the past?Lexi has wasted her entire college career researching a dead-end. Her thesis on the sixteenth-century Durham queen, Alexandra, is going nowhere. How can she defend her doctoral dissertation if she can’t even figure out where the queen was born? When she meets Dr. Lachele, Lexi doesn’t think much of … think much of it—until she wakes up in the past without her memory.
King Richard’s only goal is to keep Durham from war with Galia, even if it means marrying their princess whom he’s never met. When his advisers bring news that the princess’s ship was attacked, Richard is devastated—until he finds a beautiful girl washed up on shore and assumes she’s the missing royal. Lexi has no memory of her past, but Richard’s advisers urge him to press forward with wedding plans.
As Lexi grows more and more enamored with the kind-hearted king, memories of her past have her questioning her present—until another Galian princess arrives in Durham to take her deceased sister’s place as queen. Will Lexi fight to stay in the past with Richard, or will she be forced to return to the future without him?
This bite-sized heartwarming romance is sweet and clean, with no cliffhangers and a guaranteed HEA. This book can be read as a stand-alone.

Lexi has hit a dead-end in the research for 16th century Queen Alexandra, and her outline for her dissertation is due in a month! After her book club meeting Lexi has a conversation with Dr. Lachele, who tells her she needs a vacation where she can meet a handsome young man. Lexi jokes “Can you make him a king? I’d love to ask King Richard about his bride.” Suddenly the world is spinning and Lexi’s gasping for air in salt water, then she’s found unconscious on the beach in Durham by King Richard with no memory of her past or where she’s from.
King Richard wants to avoid going to war with Galia. He’s agreed to marry a princess he’s never met to help unite the two countries. When word arrives that pirates attacked the ship carrying his soon-to-be-bride, he’s not sure how he’s going to keep Galia’s King Philip from attacking. Out for a ride to clear his head Richard finds Lexi washed up on the shore dressed in the finery of a princess and with a pendant bearing the the Galian royal crest.
I don’t want to give anything away, but I will say I liked Lexi and Richard together. They’re both great characters and had immediate chemistry. Since I also read the author’s Royal Secrets series it was nice to get a little background on the countries of Durham and Galia, but you definitely don’t have to read that series to enjoy this book. It was funny when Lexi used modern words and had to try to explain them.
This was a fun read. It can be read in an afternoon so if you’re looking for a short sweet romance with royals and a little time travel thrown into the mix you’ll enjoy this latest book in the Book Club series.
This is a clean romance with just kissing.
Finding the Past
Some wonderful elements of fantasy and fairy tale come together in this story of a frustrated grad student who can find no information about her namesake, a medieval princess. Features pirates, wicked dukes, lots of royalty, and corsets–plus a fairy godmother and a bit of time travel.
Another lovely, light and quick read in this enjoyable series. I enjoy the writing of this author a lot, but would have liked to see a little more character development. That said, it was a fun read. Would recommend this and the entire series.
This is usually not my genre but this book was worth reading.
This author always has her finger on the pulse of her readers.
I enjoyed this short read, the characters were wonderful and the plot well-written.
I am enjoying this series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
This was a cute quick read. A mini bookcation into time-travel. I did adore King Richard and the tale of Lexi going into the past. I liked the dual POV for both of the main characters.
What I did not care for was 1) the manner of speech for the people back in the 1500s. I don’t think a king would use the term, “joint task force” that is a modern term. Plus the style of speech was all wrong. 2) Lexi was working on her dissertation for her Ph.D. but when she goes back in time, she is assigned Mary as her lady’s maid who is close in age but Mary was about 18 or 19. Lexi must have been a genius to be working on her Ph.D. at that age. 3) the years weren’t adding up. When Lexi’s memory returns, she says she is from the 21st century. Richard is shocked that she is from 500 years into the future. The fire that destroys the castle’s library occurred in 1589. After the fire, “Lexi looked up into his face and smiled warmly, seeing the young man she’d married nearly fifty years ago”. So does the book start out into the future say about 20 years?
While the premise was a good it was the little things that I feel detracted from the story at least for me. If you just want to get away from reality for a little bit and those things don’t bother you, then yes I highly recommend this story. I did enjoy reading this but it would not be a book that I would re-read.
This was a sweet time travel piece with just the right amount of romance. I really liked the hero-he’s my favorite character. He was all goodness and humility and kindness.

I have enjoyed the Book Club Series. Each book is unique in how the author has chosen to tell her story. I liked that this book took Lexi to a specific person, King Richard, from the 16th century thanks to Dr. Lachelle, the fairy godmother to the book club.. I also enjoyed the twists and turns and surprise ending as well. It is a fun, interesting story seeped in Lexi;s history and Lexi’s research on Princess Alexandra. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.
I started this book and finished in one day. An easy, fun read. This book is very different than any of Lindzee’s other’s, but she nailed it! Time travel from the future to the past without so much of an interruption in the story. It flowed very well! I loved King Richard and Lexi. They were adorable! If you’re looking for something a little different with a little romance, than this is the book for you!
This is a sweet time travel romance that also has betrayal, pirates, and a mystery. You can tell there is definitely a connection between Lexi and King Richard even though they are from two different times. Will things work out for them? Or will Lexi return to the present time? This was a fun read.
Did not see that happening. Which I probably should have, seeing how Dr. Lachele is involved, such a unique lady.
You can’t help but fall in love with Lexi/Alexandra & Richard, even though Richard had his doubts a few times. I mean who of us wouldn’t feel/think the same back in those days?
I can’t say I feel bad for Peter, I mean he is family after all, but what he did, he deserved what he was given.
I’d like to know what happend to Isabella, did she go back to Galia, to her true love or stay in Durham or what?
This book is very different from other books by Lindzee Armstrong, specifically because it was based in the 1500s. Because this genre is new to her I’ll forgive her for not quite getting the historical feel right. I love history like Lexi and wish the story had been more historically accurate and would have pulled me into the 16th century better, but I still enjoyed the story. I was also fun that the countries that were discussed are part of another one of Armstrong’s series. I enjoyed that connection. Lexi and Richard are very sweet together. I loved how attentive Richard was to her and so loving and caring. It’s a beautiful love story.
The Pretend Princess is a time travel romance. This book has murderous pirates, mistaken identity, nefarious plotting and more. I am not normally a fan of stories in the 16th century (or of time travel), but this one grabbed my interest immediately and I had to finish it right then. King Richard and Lexi were great characters. The well written plot moves along at a steady pace. Will Lexi discover why so little is known about Richard’s Queen? You have to read this book to find out!
The Pretend Princess is a time travel novella that takes a student who is researching Queen Alexandra of Durham for her dissertation and transplants her into the time period she was researching (the sixteenth century). It has a twist to it, but I won’t give it away.
King Richard was a wonderful character, as was Alexandra. They were so wonderful together . If they weren’t royalty, I’d say they were cute together. King Richard stood by his love for Alexandra, even though he didn’t always trust her. She was in love with him almost from the beginning, but hesitant to allow herself to believe it would go anywhere.
The language/slang mix ups added a nice touch. The character trying to explain them to the King was priceless! Overall, this was a cute, clean romance that made my heart sing!
This book was a romantic time travel romance. Lexi was having research problems while working on her dissertation involving royalty in the sixteenth century. Things take a turn when she is taken back in time. Lots of confusion, memory loss, and some suspense. She and King Richard are unable to ignore the chemistry that was igniting between them. A missing princess, ships full of pirates, a library fire and a looming war add to the mystery. No spoiler here but does she stay back in time or return to the future? Does she find the true history of Princess Alexandra? I read an arc and voluntarily chose to review.
