“This is human business,” the vampire said. “As I have always said, if the humans take it upon themselves to kill one another, it is often best to simply stand out of the way…”Vampire detective Nick knows a few seers. One of those seers, an antisocial male with the annoying habit of painting things before they happen, appears at Nick’s work, claiming he has something to show him. That something … something to show him. That something turns out to be his latest creation, a mural of a bomb going off in downtown New York.
Unfortunately, by the time Nick sees it, it’s already too late.
Nick has no leads apart from the painting itself, a murdered human, and the dead man’s partner, the city’s star designer and architect, an eccentric vampire named Straven. Soon, what starts off as a simple case of a robbery gone wrong begins to look like something a lot more sinister, with much more far-reaching consequences.
It also brings Nick far too close to the life he thought he’d left behind, as a lieutenant in the White Death, the vampire criminal underground.
When his ex-girlfriend shows up, a new vampire boyfriend in tow at a hip vampire club, Nick figures things really can’t get any worse.
Book #3 of the Vampire Detective Midnight series.
VAMPIRE DETECTIVE MIDNIGHT is a romantic science fiction and fantasy series set in a futuristic, dystopian New York populated by vampires, humans and psychics trying to rebuild their world after a devastating race war nearly obliterates the previous one.
A spinoff of the Quentin Black Mystery series, it features vampire with a past and homicide detective, Naoko “Nick” Tanaka, who gets transferred to the NYPD after a bad incident in Los Angeles forces him to start a new life. Nick works as a “Midnight,” or vampire in the employ of the human police department, but when he arrives in New York, he really just wants to be left alone to work, surf, and deal with his immortality in peace.
Life, and the residents of New York, clearly have other ideas.

“The Prescient” is the third instalment into the “Vampire Detective Midnight” series by J.C. Andrijeski, a state-regulated vampire, who works the night-shifts assisting the human police with ‘special’ cases. Tanaka is the embodiment of a Japanese-like hero, the one who manages to save the day, because is the right thing to do, without needed any other reason, even as he keeps ending up in probably even a worse position that he ever was in in the very first place. Tanaka has his life cut out for him, wherever he goes
After two extremely dangerous and draining cases Tanaka deserves some reprieve, instead he gets a high-profile case: one of the richest man in the city has been killed in a building bombing. Yes, Tanaka is that ‘lucky’, and to make things even more interesting Straven, the principal lead in the case and a very eccentric vampire, seems to have a very personal interesting in Tanaka himself, who tries to play along to resolve the case, while getting deep and deeper into Straven’s world. Along the way Tanaka discovers secrets he rather had kept unknown, while getting dangerous closer to his former life on the other side of the law divide.
JC Andrijeski has the rare ability to create whole new worlds, alien and familiar at the same time with interesting characters, that captivate our attention page after page. Her writing style is delightful as always, fluid, fast paced and vivid, which helps to get across the action elements without disregarding the more subtle romantic aspects of the story. “Vampire Detective Midnight” is another wonderful series for mature readers that appreciate multidimensional characters and new perspectives.
It’s sci-fi! No, it’s mystery! No, it’s a vampire book! One thing it definitely is: it’s JC Andrijeski’s The Prescient (Vampire Detective Midnight Book 3) and it’s superb. Naoko “Nick” Tanaka is a wonderfully crafted character and this book once again provides a superbly written tale that’s perfectly crafted for him – and totally fun for we readers. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.
I have been utterly robbed of words. I love Nick! I think I have loved him from the very beginning and this book has only further cemented my opinion. This story spins out in a twisted flurry of action, drama, and intrigue taking us deep into places in vampire society I didn’t expect we’d get to go. I love the way this takes everything we thought we knew at the end of the last book and tips it all ever so slightly on its head and, at least for the moment, straightens out one of Nick’s most horribly bad decisions of the previous book.
I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book from the author.
Don’t you just love a good mystery?
As we continue with Vampire Detective Midnight series additional information and clues come to the forefront as destruction rains down.
Is war imminent?
Who is behind the dead bodies and the destruction of beauty.
Will Nick (who is coming into his own) be able to find the tech that has been created to bring this war to fruition?
Character building at its finest, you are right there with them in the laughter, the hunger, the fear. It’s a wonderful journey.
I encourage all to begin with Vampire Detective Midnight: A Science Fiction Vampire Detective Novel. You won’t regret it!!
What are two, three days in the life of a vampire. I mean in the grand scheme of things? Nothing.
Well, not if the Vampire is Naoko Tanaka, Midnight for the NYPD, and Ms Andrijeski is the author of the story.
She manages to cram dire predictions, murder, greed, espionage, prejudice, explosions, old fashioned detective-work paired with high tech gadgets, friendship, and a torrid love affair into that short amount of time.
The leftover spaces are filled with all kinds of people. Hm, no. Persons. No. Okay, to gather them all together, let me call “them” sentient beings.
And let me tell you, they are drawn with a fine brushstroke every one of them.
As eccentric as “they” might be!
