This was Michael Connelly’s breakout book. The use of different points of view is interesting in this story– he tried to go back to it later one and it failed.
This is the first of a three book series, featuring a different protagonist that you are used to in a Connelly book.
Michael Connelly is my favorite writer of detective and crime fiction novels. The Poet and The Last Coyote are two of my favorites. They are among his earlier novels. If you read them you will want to read more. I’ve read them all. Connelly once wrote, as near as I can paraphrase, that he was surprised so many people picked one of his earlier …
One of my favorite Michael Connelly novels. The less you know going into it the better. Highly recommended!
Michael Connelly’s new book “Fair Warning” brings back reporter Jack McEvoy and FBI agent Rachel Walling, so this is an appropriate time to look back at “The Poet,” where readers first meet these characters. “The Poet,” Connelly’s fifth book, was published in 1996 and won both the Anthony Award and the Dilys Award.

Superior !
The best book I’ve read in a long time. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to see what would happen next.
Really good
I love the Harry Bosch series by the same author and I didn’t expect to like this book as much. But I did. This book is an amazing read.
Michael Connelly has been a favorite thriller writer for me for a long time.
This was my first Michael Connelly book. I could not put it down. It grabbed me and would not let go. I was deployed when I picked this up and lost a night of sleep to finish it.
Connelly never fails to deliver an absorbing story!
Slow boring
This is the only book by this author that I haven’t liked. I did not the format at all.
Love MR anyway but he really outdid himself on this book! It was amazing!
One of my first Michael Connelly books. Been hooked ever since.
One of those books that you dont want to end. Michael Connelly is the best! Maybe the best in that genre I’ve ever read. Twice.
Lead character is no Harry Bosch, but still a strong story and worthwhile read.
Read it and then reread it 10 years later. Great read
I have enjoyed all Michael Connelly books.
Read this years ago. My favorite of all of Connelly’s books.
