Being that this is a murder mystery/thriller only it was ok. I can tell Lisa did her research and getting into the killers head…she really did a good job. Sadly I think we can all guess the killer from the prologue. It just wasn’t surprising at all. I’ll still check out Lisa’s work. I LOVE this cover!

A detective with a penchant for poetry instilled by her loving grandfather is tasked to find a serial killer who leaves poems in the mouth of his victims. Detective Samantha Jazz fixates on a person of interest and what follows is a taunt police procedural thriller. I would have liked to see more buildup given to the killer at the end, but over all this was a decent book.
Young detective, a corrupted cop daughter, is called to take over one murder case from a detective that vanished into thin air. It is potential serial murder where murderer is leaving lines from poems and she is the only in the police that has education in poetry.
From that point we have a police procedural story where Detective Samantha Jazz is solving The poets secret. with help of her partner and colleagues.
The murderer is watching her, stalking her, and murders that are happening are somehow connected to her. They have one suspect but is it him or just another evil man that fits into the puzzle?
Samantha is pushed to the limits with her obsession to catch him, she even puts her job into jeopardy…
I myself was invested in thinking who the killer is, that kept me glued to my kindle until I finished the book. This book offers a lot of mind games, thinking, poetry insights, running and rushing around, a bit of good twists and turns and unexpected killer
Great read! This is a story about a serial killer and the detective who has to solve the cases. Unknowingly to her, there is a personal connection. This books has several twists and is suspenseful until the end.
Detective Samantha Jazz has caught the eye of a killer, and with each life he takes he leaves behind a note just for her. Each note a poem written for her eyes only, the killer knowing she will be the only one who can fully appreciate his words, and be the one to decode them. Ultimately hoping each one will lure her one step closer to him…
The Poet is a spellbinding tale about a serial killer with a fetish for poetry and a deep dark obsession for a certain female detective that has managed to excite him. From the very first page this one will have you scooting a little closer to the edge of your seat and taking notice. It’s expertly penned words will take you on an adventure you won’t soon forget, it’s a action-packed poetic game of cat and mouse. Each page taking you deeper into the killer’s dark and demented world, and one step closer to discovering his/her identity. And just as you think you have it all figured it, the rug will be pulled out from under you and you’ll be left stumped all over again. If you like mind-twisting tales then I have no doubt this one will have you puzzled from start to finish. Highly recommend!

The Poet is a suspenseful thriller with twists and turns that keeps you turning the pages. I loved Detective Samantha Jazz and I’m hoping there will be more books about her and her cases!
Jones takes us on a journey that will grab a hold and take you for a wide ride with The Poet.
While it seems to start a bit slow and come off as a simple cop fiction novel, don’t let that fool you. Typical of Jones, the further you get into this story, the more things change and twist around. What seems to be a dead-end all of a sudden becomes something more sinister and dives right into the psychological genre of a thriller.
Her lead character, Detective Sam Jazz, has some interesting ties, quirks, and friendships. I love the complexity of all of her layers and issues, her humorous and tight work relationship with her partner, and especially her non-boyfriend, Wade, who totally gets her.
Jones has authored a story complete with all things we look for in a police procedural thriller. Multiple streams of suspects; plenty of twists and added crime to muddy the waters; and the raw descriptions that bring us right into the story. The pacing is right on track and by the end, she throws in one more spiral to taking down this serial killer.
Detective Jazz is a complex character that will make a fabulous lead in which to build a series. Do I miss the romance portion? Not really, but maybe there is something building and growing here. Fingers crossed!
The Poet is a gripping, gritty, and raw look at murder and obsession that will raise your hackles a few times.
The Poet is a phenomenal suspenseful read. You will be on the edge of your seat as Sam works to solve who is the Poet. Sam is strong and she is determined to bring the Poet down. I love the banter between Sam and her partner Lang. You will be guessing the entire time who the Poet is. You will love how Sam doesn’t give up and works through the case. I love the chemistry between Sam and Wade. They work so well together as a couple who can lean on each other to talk through the cases. There are a few twists and turns that will keep you engrossed the whole entire time. I could not put this one down. Go one click it today.
Interesting who done it, police procedural. I could not decide whether this was a series book and if I had missed the first book, although this appears not to be the case. The main character, Samantha Jazz, is the focus and center of this mystery and I enjoyed the guessing game, which did not allow me an answer until very close to the conclusion. Excellent read.
This mystery suspense is a well written novel that was both entertaining and at times gripping. The Poet is an enjoyable whodunit mystery with a hint of a thrill and an intriguing storyline featuring a strong female protagonist and a unique serial killer dubbed “The Poet”.
While there was some lagging in the middle with a bit of a rushed ending, the plot was well flushed out. I was especially captivated by how the story unfolded. Detective Samantha Jazz is a well developed character with a good head on her shoulders. I enjoyed seeing how her mind worked as she tirelessly strived towards stopping a serial killer that seemed intent in drawing her into his game. I would really like to see the author to continue to write more books that feature her. I would say that the Poet is more of a mystery crime novel than a full on thriller. The process of unraveling just who is “The Poet“ kept me enthralled, but I wouldn’t say there is a lot of edge of your seat suspense. Nonetheless, really enjoyed this read.
SUSPENSEFUL
THE POET is a stand-alone suspense detective story. This is not a fluffy cozy mystery; it is dark, realistic, and gritty.
There were a couple of oopsies in the plot – for example, a mention of the killer being into BDSM when it had not been brought up previously as being in the profile. The reader knew it because we had read a scene with him and his wife.
I loved the way that we were invited into the minds of both the killer and the detectives. It is terrifying because this story of a stalker fixated on a woman detective could be true. The mind of the killer is believable. The investigative work is detailed and procedurally interesting without causing the story to drag.
Because I have read so many stories from Lisa Renee Jones, I was able to predict the outcome. Still, I was not disappointed in reading this and would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in Suspense, Romantic Suspense, or Murder Mystery.
Note: While I received this book as a gifted ARC, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

The Poet by Lisa Renee Jones a four-star read that could have been a two. I started this one twice before I finally managed to get through it, I struggled with my rating as in some ways it’s a very clever story, but then in others I had to force myself to read it, and that as surprised me as I have ripped through this author’s work before. The ending made the story in my eyes, if it wasn’t that I would have been forced to give it two.
We start off with a prologue that sets your mind in motion and I wasn’t sure where it was going but it had me very intrigued. Once the first chapter unfolded, keeping the prologue in mind, I was caught up in the story immediately. Our heroine is Detective Samantha Jaz who is a legacy police officer in her department as her father was an officer before her, although he was dirty. She is a good detective and tries hard to do the right thing and not have her father’s shadow hanging over her.
Sam and her partner, Ethan Langford, are assigned to a case that a previous officer left mid-investigation involving a murder where the killer uses poetry to leave clues for the police. Sam studied poetry in college and is somewhat of an expert, so she dives headfirst into the investigation. As Sam digs deeper into the investigation, she realizes some things are very familiar about the killer and that he might have her in his sights as well.
I am a huge fan of Dennis Lehane, Jeffrey Deaver, and Patricia Cornwell so to say this novel is my jam well it really is. One of the reasons I read Lisa Renee Jones is because of the romantic suspense. Although there was no romance in this book, the suspense is spot on. I love the detail she covers for the law enforcement aspect of this book because it is very well done. She took the time to find out how things work during a homicide investigation. The dynamic between the detectives, patrol officers, Medical Examiner, superiors, and outside agencies was very well handled. The plot was unique, smart, and compelling and I really hope this becomes a series!
This is a great page turner! It’s fast-paced when it needs to be and slower-paced when it should be. I liked the relationship between Lang and Jazz, their dialogue was for the most part funny and has a lot of crude humor.
I will say that a lot of the book is spent of who is clearly not the correct suspect and a lot of bad goes down because of this mistake and I spent most of those sections saying (out loud) WHY ARE THEY GOING AFTER THIS PERSON WHO IS OBVIOUSLY NOT THE RIGHT PERSON!???
I found this to be reminiscent of Tess Gerritsen’s Rizzoli & Isles series, which I absolutely love by the way, but The Poet is a lot more tame in describing the crime scenes. It’s amazing that Lisa Renee Jones had so many people to call on for information that helped her write out parts of her book so it is more accurate as to procedures and how things really go down.
/5
I recommend The Poet if you enjoy –
• Strong female lead
• Sass
• Snarky dialogue
Trigger Warning:
Domestic abuse (mentioned), pedophilia (mentioned), drug abuse, language.
Thank you Netgalley and Entangled Publishing for the eARC. All opinions are my own.
I received this book as ARC, but I give my honesty option.
FANTASTIC, Lisa Renee Jones has out done herself. Her talents for writing a great stories is not just Romance, Suspense, but now she has a hell’a Murder Mystery.
I read the Prologue real slow hoping to get hints… I reread the poet verses looking for the answer…. I got 90% done and had no clue, so the Ending was FANTASTIC!
Let me start by saying I am a huge fan of all things Lisa Renee Jones. Her stories are always well crafted, intriguing, interesting and intelligent. I do not read murder mysteries but Ms. Jones wrote it so I read it. I found it so compelling that I read it cover to cover in one sitting. It was remarkable! Just about the time you think you’ve figured it out the plot takes a right turn and off you go in a different direction. Solving a murder or in this case murders is tedious sometimes mind numbing work. You use your experience, expertise and your gut to put the pieces together. No one person does it alone. They have a team that assists and supports them.
Detectives Samantha Jazz and Ethan Langford are a successful homicide team. She’s the brainy, intuitive and methodical one. He’s the charmer, the sounding board and the protective voice of reason. A team that meshes well in every sense of the word. Plus their easy partnering and friendship has them fighting like siblings which definitely lightens darker moments. Investigating a psychopathic serial killer stretches them and their team to their limits.
Lisa Renee Jones brings a new kind of suspense when writing The Poet, Detective Samantha Jazz is handed a case after the lead detective up a disappears all because the Poet is after Samantha, he wants her to be the Master!! There’s three unsolved murders which Samantha needs to solve before he comes after her!
Will Samantha solve the mystery behind the poems that where found at each murder or will she be next on his list?
I enjoyed this book, it’s not my normal kind of read, but really liked it!
this book has lots of twist and turns that keeps you guessing, and tells the newest case of Detective Samantha Jazz. She and her partner Ethan Langford’s newest case leads them to a place of poetry reading.
It’s a stand-alone, thriller, with no romance although the female lead does have an ex-boyfriend that’s involved in the story.
It’s about a serial killer, who leaves a poem after he kills a person, and Sam is tasked with investigating this case after the previous detective goes missing.
The story moves at a very fast pace and it’s easy to follow along without getting lost.
I liked it very much, A gripping read,I couldn’t put it down.
While this is not my normal kind of read, I did enjoy this. Lisa Renee Jones is one of my favorite authors and I’m always ready to read her books. This is a stand-alone, thriller, with no romance although the female lead does have an ex-boyfriend that’s involved in the story. There are some twists that will keep you guessing with some action and suspense. I received an advance copy of this book from Net Galley and the author and this is my honest opinion.
Wow! This book packs quite a punch. This book is loaded with twists and turns. At times it was like being on a roller coaster. Samantha is such a complex character. I really liked seeing the different layers of Sam. I stayed up until 3 A.M. reading this book. I couldn’t put it down.
