A brand-new standalone novel in the New York Times bestselling Briar U series! What I learned after last year’s distractions cost my hockey team our entire season? No more screwing up. No more screwing, period. As the new team captain, I need a new philosophy: hockey and school now, women later. Which means that I, Hunter Davenport, am officially going celibate…no matter how hard that makes things. how hard that makes things.
But there’s nothing in the rulebook that says I can’t be friends with a woman. And I won’t lie—my new classmate Demi Davis is one cool chick. Her smart mouth is hot as hell, and so is the rest of her, but the fact that she’s got a boyfriend eliminates the temptation to touch her.
Except three months into our friendship, Demi is single and looking for a rebound.
And she’s making a play for me.
Avoiding her is impossible. We’re paired up on a yearlong school project, but I’m confident I can resist her. We’d never work, anyway. Our backgrounds are too different, our goals aren’t aligned, and her parents hate my guts.
Hooking up is a very bad idea. Now I just have to convince my body—and my heart.

Demi and Hunter are my second favorites after Brenna and Jake. Demi reminds me so much of Brenna but the Latina version. Her friendship with Hunter was extremely genuine and there was never any flirting and just respect for each other. Until Demi long time boyfriend breaks her heart and her grand idea is to rebound with Hunter. Poor Hunter was practicing celibacy and thought that Demi was joking. But she wasn’t and she was persistent and it was the funniest thing. Until he couldn’t take it anymore and caved. These two were awesome together, supported each other in everything and had the best of times together. I was glad to see my all time favorites Garrett and Hannah even if it was for a little bit along with Logan and Dean. The adventures of these group of friends are always entertaining especially Rupi and Hollis. Great story as always.
FIVE HOCKEY STARS FOR DEMI AND HUNTER !!!
I can’t believe that we won’t get any new book from the “Briar U” series and that Demi and Hunter were the last couple in this series that I’ve read about.
I’ll really miss this “family” because my love for Off-Campus started a few years and just in time when I’ve finished with reading “The Goal”, Elle published “The Chase”, the first book from spin-off series “Briar U”, so I didn’t have feeling that series is over and that I miss my hockey players.
But, now I feel heartbroken because the “Off-Campus” series is the reason why I fell in love with this genre and started reading sports romance.
This book is everything!!!
Demi and Hunter are one of the funniest and cutest couple I’ve ever read. They’ve made me laugh countless times.
Demi is a female character with whom I would like to be a friend. She is the woman who knows what she wants and she always says what she thinks.
Hunter.
I thought that he will be a player like he was in previous books.
But, he really surprised me.
I didn’t expect that he will be in celibate for so long and that he capable of being just a friend with some girl.
Demi and Hunter’s relationship was slow-burn and at first, they were just friends who work together on a project.
But, once when chemistry exposed between them there was no celibate who could stop fire which started burning and it never stopped.
I’m so glad that Elle included little insight into Rupi and Hollis’ relationship because that was a cherry on the top of the “Briar U” series.
I hope that Elle will write some other college romance series because a book like this I could reread for infinity times (and I will these two series for sure).
If you’re looking for a series with hot hockey players and a lot of fun trough the whole book, then “Off-Campus” and “Briar U” are the series you must to read!!!
Highly recommended!!!
Did I mention I love Briar U? Sigh! Hunter and Demi’s story is a beautiful addition to my beloved hockey world. Eek! Feeling a little tearful thinking about the awesomeness of this book. I laughed (OMG Pablo), I cried, and had heart palpations especially during an angsty moment (wink, read it you will understand).
The friends to lovers theme of this book is so touching. Hunter working on making himself a better person even before Demi choked me up a big. I love who he is with his teammates and friends. His reasons for not wanting to play professionally hockey broke my heart.
Demi, go girl, I love you. You are the right amount of fiery mixed with both heart and smarts. Her journey of trying to figure herself out made for a more intriguing story.
This story has a crazy, dumb ex-boyfriend, parents that need to get a clue, and a hilarious coach who was on point in this book. Love everything about this five star read.
Happy Reading Everyone! XOXO
Attention all Briar U Fans!! Elle Kennedy has just scored a Hat Trick with the third installment in the Briar U Series with The Play.
As a longtime fan of Kennedy I knew she would never write anything to disappoint. Hunter and Demi were simply a dream come true. Watching their quirky friendship unfold while so many other details lead the way for each of the characters to be developed so fully and robust made for a story which was simply out of this world.
Full of witty banter and amazing chemistry with a deep rooted story about far more than love, Kennedy has penned another hit. Just when you thought that the Briar U series could not get any better – it has!
As Always, Happy Reading!

I don’t know about you but I JUST LOVE THIS SERIES! From OFF-CAMPUS to BriarU, there isn’t a story I can say I didn’t like it. All the books, all of this college world, all of this heros and heroines… everything made me love and love even more Elle’s writing. I was in a book funk and nothing was getting my attention. Book after book and I wasn’t connecting with any of them. But when I saw THE PLAY on my kindle my heart raced and suddenly my bookworm skills were back. I opened the first page and only stopped when it hit the end. I Loved it!!!!
THE PLAY tells the story about Hunter. He did some stupid things like when we read Summer and Brenna story. But now he wanted to focused all his energy in his hockey game and he thinks his manwhore escapedes was interfering in it. So he decided to not have sex during the season. When classes are back he meets Demi and she becomes his partner on a project. He thought he was safed because she had a boyfriend. Until she hadn’t. And Demi now wants a rebound to forget her last relationship. When I read the blurb I thought it would be more like a chasing scenario, but I LOVED that Elle took her time developing Hunter and Demi friendship. Demi is new to us, but I loved her right at the first read. I thought she was perfect for Hunter. They were that kind of friends that will end up being best friends forever or they will fall in love.
As always with this series, I laughed a lot with this characters and now I also want a pet named Pablo! lol I don’t know how Elle do it, but she always managed to create this situations that make us laugh with the craziness of it. The majority of the book was a bit of light drama and funny part, so I thought it wouldn’t have a lot of drama, but there was a especific part that made my eyes watered. And I loved that after the end of the book Elle talks about it.
A lot of our favorites book boyfriends of the past books are here and I loved to know about their lifes after college. And altough Hollis and Rupi won’t have their own book, I also lenjoyed knowing what happened to them, because they are the craziest couple ever that we all love so much.
I only hoped the ending had more about how they will be in the near future. I thought it was to fast. As the last book of the series (that I know of) I thoguht the end could show us more of their happy ending, I don’t know. It has and end, but I just wished it was longer, because, as I said before, I loooooved them.
OMG! I’m gonna miss this BriarU boys so bad (and the so powerful girls)! It TOTALLY worthed the wait. If Elle ever decide to write more about this universe I’m gonna be the first to scream with excitement! I highly recomend it!
5 “yup yup” stars!
I have been desperate for Hunter Davenport’s story ever since his heart was broken in The Chase , the first book in the Briar U series. Then, he had a rough time in the second book, The Risk , when sleeping around cost the hockey team a chance at the national championship. Now he is back with his own book and he has a new philosophy – “Hockey and school now, women later.”
Hunter has been abstaining from sex for several months when a psych project brings Demi into his life. Even though he is extremely attracted to her, he is determined to stick to his vow. The fact that Demi has a long-term boyfriend makes everything easier because she’s unavailable and isn’t interested.
Demi is a breath of fresh air because unlike every other woman Hunter meets, she isn’t throwing herself all over him, and it gives them a chance to form a solid friendship. I loved watching the fun they have when being friends is all that is on the table. It allows them to be real and honest without trying to impress each other.
Then, Demi breaks up with her boyfriend. Having only ever been with him, she is in need of a rebound and she knows just who she wants.
“I’m confident I wouldn’t have much trouble finding someone to have sex with me. Half the men on Tinder would offer themselves up. But I don’t want those men. I want Hunter Davenport.”
Hunter and Demi are a riot together. They are so much fun and the banter is phenomenal. Even when they are just friends, I found myself giddy and full of smiles every time these two are together. They are also wildly attracted to each other. The chemistry is undeniable and the sexual tension spikes when they want make a move but are still holding back. Not only did they not want to ruin their friendship but there is Hunter’s vow too. That doesn’t stop Demi from pursuing him though.
“Since experiencing my “move,” she’s launched a campaign to end my celibacy, as evidenced by the text she just sent.
DEMI: Have a good game tonight! I hope you score! Speaking of scoring, have you considered breaking your vow?”
It takes a bit to get Hunter on board but when he does, WHOA, talk about cranking up the heat. Demi and Hunter on fire and I loved that they couldn’t keep their hands off each other. The spark isn’t what keeps them together though. They understand and support each other, and they don’t pretend things always works out. They are realistic but still go after what they want.
The character development in this story is well written. Hunter has real fears and I liked that he takes action to control them. He learns who he is and who he isn’t, and I loved him more when his confidence grows. I loved watching Demi fight for what she wants both personally and professionally. She has a huge heart and I knew she would reach her dreams and win the guy.
Overall, The Play gave me so much more than I had hoped and I loved it! Hunter and Demi are wonderful characters and I couldn’t stop from being consumed by their hilarious, emotional, sweet, steamy story. The ending was so satisfying and I was extremely happy to see Hunter finally get his HEA. A fantastic addition to the series!!
“I’m sorry I made you break your vow,” I whisper sheepishly, as I hold him tightly against me.
“I’m not,” he whispers back.
I have to add that I love when characters from other books make cameos and The Play has so many. From the other Briar U guys and gals to the Off-Campus clan, I loved getting more of the characters I fell hard for and I always have a wonderful time with them!
This is book 3 in this brilliant series from Elle Kennedy and I absolutely love this series.
I loved Hunter in the previous books. He had his heart broken along with his wrist and no he is putting all his energy into his team, his Hockey. Its funny that now he has taken a vow of celibacy he meets his match!
The connection between Hunter and Demi is instant and electric even though Demi has a boyfriend. Once he was gone it was time for their relationship to bloom.
Elle did it again by delivering a sweet, entertaining sports romance with characters you love and a storyline that will keep you engaged from beginning to end.
I did not want to read this because I DO NOT WANT IT TO BE OVER. PERIOD.
Dudes…. Hunter is Amaze-balls.
Oh my. Lord. I loved him. So much.
I really like Demi too! So much. Often the cool chick is over played and doesn’t seem real. She was so cool. And so real. I adores her.
This is the 3rd in the Briar U, which is a spin off of Off Campus.
Man. This book was everything.
Hunter is celibate after some events in the previous briar book!!
Demi has been in a long term relationship with a guy, Nico since she was like 8.
They meet in a psychology class and get paired up on a school project. They become friends!
This story has it all.
Swoon worthy hero
Badass heroine
Humor
Heartbreak
Strife
Hockey!!
Flashes with all the briar U and Off Campus line up
I LOVED IT. highly recommend.

Ever since I was introduced to Hunter Davenport in The Chase and how he got his heart broken I couldn’t wait to get his book. I felt so bad for him and how he behaved in The Risk showed he needed a change. In behavior and what he wanted to do in life.
In The Play Hunter is celibate and very dedicated to succeeding while focusing on his main goal which is hockey. It’s going great also when he gets paired up with Demi for Psych class doing a project. Their bantering is awesome and so funny. I enjoyed every scene with them because they worked so well together. As partners on the class project and as friends.
Demi has a long time boyfriend which helps Hunter in only seeing Demi as a friend and nothing else. When Demi suddenly finds herself single she sets her eyes on Hunter. Well, she already had eyes on him prior to being single, acknowledging him as attractive and a great guy but now she wants and can act on it since she’s a single woman. This results in some laugh out load moments and of course hot as hell scenes. Hunter has definitely got his work cut out for him with Demi.
The Play is so far the final book in the Briar U series and it ended with a bang. Hunter and Demi are fabulous together and the perfect couple. The right woman for Hunter who had to go through so much to find the right woman and love. I know this could potentially be the final book but damn a Conor book would be amazing news. Here’s to hoping this isn’t the end.
4 Semi & Monk Stars
Death, taxes, the sun rising in the east, ect. You get the idea. We can add another thing to that list, any time Elle releases a book in the Briar universe, it will become an all time favorite.
Every single couple and story has been an instant hit from the very first page, Hunter and Demi are no exception. Their story was beyond swoon worthy and hilarious to boot. My cheeks hurt from smiling and laughing at the easy banter between them. I loved their friendship, I loved the jokes and attraction. Everything about these two was completely irresistible.
I think everyone has been eagerly waiting for Hunters story. We got to see some of his highs and lows with the first two books and I have been rooting for him through it all. I love that he was cleaning it up in this book although I always saw him as the good guy. There is a lot of hilarity with his self imposed abstinence. And his antics with the hockey team left me in several laughing fits.
I absolutely adored the relationship he and Demi built. Hunter definitely met his match as she’s one of the funniest, most confident heroines I’ve read in a series. They were so great together.
Kennedy creates pure magic in the form of NA romance. I always adore a good sports romance, and nobody does it quite like she does. Another 5 stars along with another fantastic read from her. I could happily read about the Briar crew for years to come.
I received a review copy before release for an honest review.
This book is #3 in the series and it is my new favorite. It really reminded me a lot of Garrett and Hannah’s love story in that these two work together on a class project but don’t have a romantic relationship until much later in the book but instead become really close friends.
We also get to see how all my old favorites from the previous series are doing, Dean, Allie, Garrett, Hannah, Logan, Grace as well as the other characters in this series like Brenna, Rupi, Jake. I loved catching up with them.
This is Hunter’s book and he is paired with a brand new character, Demi. For most of the book Demi has a boyfriend, Nico. There is no cheating in this story by the main characters. She stays very true to Nico until he breaks her heart.
In this story Hunter has decided to have a PURE year. No sex at all because he wants to concentrate on Hockey. That is one reason he likes Demi, she is fun but she also has a boyfriend and so she is not interested romantically in him. So they hang out a lot.
That is until she becomes single and then well she has a lot of fun messing with Hunter. And well he has a lot of fun messing with her. But through it all they are both there for each other and they form this really solid friendship that reminded me a lot of Garrett and Hannah’s story from the previous series.
Demi was a wonderful character and I absolutely loved her. She is perfect for Hunter and I loved every second of their story.
4.5 STARS!!!!
What a great read! Hunter was so much more than I expected! He was such a good guy. I adored his story. It was so much fun to read! I loved the friends-to-lovers storyline. It was exciting, witty, and super sexy. Hunter and Demi are now one of my favorite Kennedy couples!
It was great to catch up with some of the Off-Campus and Briar U gang. Their friendships continue to melt my heart. I love these guys! I don’t know where Briar U will go from here, but I am sure to follow! I would love Conor’s story. I think he may give Dean a run for his money! Whatever Elle Kennedy writes next, I NEED it!
Review by Lys
This is more than a story of just characters in a book Elle Kennedy has given us a family one that I have come to love. The family members in the starring role in The Play is Hunter Davenport and Demi Davis.
Hunter is now the captain of the Briar U hockey team. After last year’s debacle he wants to be the best captain he can be, which includes a vow to abstain from sex and or any kind of hook ups.
Hunter and Demi meet in a Psych class and are partnered up for a research project and they just seem to click. They become friends but Hunter is relieved to discover that Demi has a boyfriend which makes it easier to stay just that friends. But the boyfriend is caught with his hand in the cookie jar and Demi breaks up with him. She thinks a good way to get over him is a rebound hook up, and she has set her sights on Hunter. The question is can Hunter resist Demi’s charm?? Guess you will have to read and see!!
A friend to lover sport romance that was filled with hilarious banter and super sexy moments with some sizzling chemistry. The friendship built slowly and they were brutally honest with each other. And in the end Demi helped Hunter see that he deserved to be happy and do what he really wanted to do even though he thought he didn’t deserve it.
Loved seeing lots of characters from the previous books. Garrett is my #1 favorite of this entire series. Loved how the older characters gave advice to the younger ones!! I find it hilarious that somehow Hunter is living with all women!!!
I absolutely LOVED every single bit of it….it ranks right up there with The Deal which is my forever favorite story of Elle Kennedy’s!! The Play is the third book in the Briar U series and a spin off from the Off Campus.
Hunter Davenport is a man on a mission after the abysmal end to his last hockey season. He’s resolved to stay away from vices and leading his team to victory is the only goal he has his sights on. If you’re a fan of the series you’ll remember Hunter from The Chase. He wasn’t cast in the best light so it’s refreshing to see him renewed haven shaken the funk that led to downfall.
What unsuspecting Hunter doesn’t know is that his temptation would come in the guise research project partner, Demi Davis. The fact Demi has a boyfriend reinforces just how off limits she is, and if anything lays the path to a genuine friendship that they develop.
Demi is the perfect ying to Hunter’s yang. She’s sweet but tough, and gives Hunter a run for his money when it comes to their verbal sparring. When her relationship falls apart, Hunter is there as a shoulder to cry on. He’s so much more than she took him for and not long before she wants to explore things further, much to Hunter’s hesitance.
Elle Kennedy did not come to Play with the latest addition to the Briar U series. The humor is ever present and it was laughs aplenty, but it was the slow burn that made this a winner for me. Hunter totally redeemed himself from the previous poor judgement I had of him, so much so he’s my favourite Briar U boy yet.
Oh my Hunter! He was such an amazing hero and this strangers to friends to lovers romance was perfect for his personality.
Demi has a boyfriend, secret goals she wants to achieve, and crazy expectations from her parents.
Hunter use to be the wild, crazy, party boy, but things have changed this year. He is celibate and trying to be the best team captain.
These two together were able to form a strong bond from being friends first, and watching them slowly realize their feelings for each other was such a fun ride. They both have strong personalities and their bantering was hilarious. Demi was perfect for him. Her determination and ability to analyze everything that was said made her able to see things beneath the surface. This made Hunter have to open up more and feel more comfortable with himself as a person. She gave him the confidence he needed to to things that he didn’t think were possible.
And like any book by Elle Kennedy, the secondary characters were amazing, and the pet couldn’t have been more perfect. They are such a tight knit group who are intertwined into each other lives, and watching these guys take care of the pet and making sure it had all of its needs met made for some of the most hilarious scenes that I have ever read. I also loved getting to see how their stories had progressed and what each past character was up to at this point in time. Even the new characters became some of my favorites, and I’m kind of sad that they may not get their own books.

The Play is the third book in the Briar U series by the talented and hilarious Elle Kennedy. I don’t even read the synopses for her books, she’s a must have author! Elle is one of the reasons I love hockey romance. It all started with Garrett (swoon) and it continues with this new group of sexy, hilarious players. We’ve known Hunter for a while and man, do we love Hunter. He was a little out of control last year and broken hearted after losing the girl he wanted, and now that he’s the captain of the team, he’s taken a vow of celibacy for the season. He thinks if he focuses on hockey and not girls, he’ll be better. It’s not as easy as he thinks. He’s going insane and I loved watching him. He’s freaking hilarious and so much more than I thought he was! When he’s paired up with Demi for a class project, he’s happy to hear she has a boyfriend. It helps him be not tempted, well, kind of. They start up a friendship and it’s easy and fun and they get along so well. They are just friends and Hunter loves that he can be just friends with a girl, even if she’s hot as hell! Then, she’s single and he’s not prepared for her to want a rebound. With him. What?! He says no way. She’s not going to be deterred so easily. Demi didn’t expect to like Hunter. He’s cocky and inappropriate, but he’s also funny and insightful and hot. Yeah, he’s sexy as sin, but she has a boyfriend, so it’s all good. Then she doesn’t and she’s wildly attracted to Hunter and wants him. Badly. She just has to convince him to unlock his chastity belt. Hunter puts up a good fight, I was proud of how strong he was. Demi is gorgeous, smart, funny, bossy and sexy. A man can only deny himself so much before he snaps. And oh boy was that delicious! Watching Hunter give in. Let go. Fall. He’s perfection. I loved this book! I don’t know how Elle makes me fall in love with every one of these players, but she does. And I don’t even feel guilty. I knew Hunter was sexy and funny, but I didn’t expect him to steal my heart with his intelligence, humor and honesty. Demi is his perfect match with her brains, body, sassiness, bossiness and fun. Overall, I loved every word from the very first to the very last and I didn’t want it to end. Do I love Hunter? Yup yup.
I really, really want to know who’s next and I have my fingers crossed for someone!
Hunter Davenport has decided that it is in his best interest as well as his teams for him to remain celibate throughout the hockey season. That’s right, the playboy from last year is no more. He is focused on hockey and hockey only. Sure he’s been tempted, but he hasn’t broken that vow. When he meets Demi Davis, his carefully laid plans may just unravel.
Demi isn’t much of a sports fan, so meeting Hunter Davenport doesn’t excite her like it would some girls. Sure she finds him attractive, but anyone would. Besides, she has a boyfriend that she is fully committed too, so she and Hunter can be friends. However when Demi and her boyfriend break up, she is ready to ‘mingle’ and Hunter is first on her list. Only he refuses to break his vow of celibacy. However the more time they spend together, the harder it is for both of them to resist each other. Can Hunter stick with his vow, or is Demi just the girl that will make it worth breaking?
This was by far one of the funniest books I’ve ever read by Elle Kennedy. The back and forth between Hunter and Demi, and Hunter and his teammates was hysterical. I was laughing out loud at some points. I’m so sad that this is the final book in the Briar U series, but this series ended on a high note! The chemistry between Hunter and Demi jumped off the page, and seriously the banter between all the guys made it that much better! I also thoroughly enjoyed getting to revisit the some of the ‘Off Campus’ boys! This was the perfect friends to lovers story, and I’m so stoked that Hunter got his happily ever after!
And once again , Elle Kennedy has written a perfectly lovely book. And agin, I was sad to have read is as quickly as I did.
My prediction was wrong though. Following The Risk, I’d taken a guess that this story would be Mike Hollis’ story and I was wrong. The Play features Hunter Davenport – whom was scorned by Summer in The Chase. This time around, Hunter has decided to lead a celibate life seeing as his actions may have caused his teams loss during the season ending championship the previous year.
With sex off the table, Hunter gets to truly know his psychology class partner, Demi. Demi has a long term boyfriend so she’s off limits to Hunter.
This is a fast paced story that keeps the reader on her toes. Once again, the Briar U series is fabulous and I hope there are more books to come.
Oh, Hunter! Loved this!
