A monk must find a killer among a flood of religious pilgrims in this medieval mystery by the Edgar Award–winning author: “A series like no other” (TheSan Diego Union-Tribune). In the year of our Lord 1141, civil war over England’s throne leaves a legacy of violence—and the murder of a knight dear to Brother Cadfael. And with gentle bud-strewn May, a flood of pilgrims comes to the celebration of … pilgrims comes to the celebration of Saint Winifred at the Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, carrying with it many strange souls—and perhaps the knight’s killer.
Brother Cadfael’s shrewd eyes see all: the prosperous merchant who rings false, an angelic lame boy, his beautiful dowerless sister, and two wealthy penitents. In the name of justice Cadfael decides to uncover the strange and twisted tale that accompanies these travelers. Instead he unearths a quest for vengeance, witnesses a miracle, and finds himself on a razor’s edge between death and the absolution of love.

Couldn’t finish it. I gave up because I never could get into it.
I love Cadfael, and anyone who likes historical drama will, too. You will get to know and love the characters, especially if you read more than one book. The author really draws you in to the time and place, you feel you can really understand medieval Britain. Plus, she does her homework! Very historically accurate. If all you know about England in the 12th century is what you learn in Cadfael novels, you’d have more accurate knowlege than most!
The Cadfael mysteries are always fun. This one did not disappoint.
Peter Ellis’ usual talent for plot twists and complicated characters. Always love starting a new Cadfael adventure.
So-so book. Interesting if you’re into medieval history (which I am) but can be confusing if you aren’t familiar with the politics at the time. Even I had to drop out to the internet and brush up on Empress Maud and King Stephen.
Read all the Cadfel books s years. Loved them and would read them again if there weren’t so many more books to read. Highly recommended for those who enjoy this type of book.
Did not like never finished
I loved the series. Bought them all
Great story. Well written
Fun to read.
Love all the Cadfael books…
the Cadfael books continue to inspire, great historical fiction.
I found it entertaining if a bit slow. The portrayal of life ina monastery in the 12th century was the real attraction for me. There was a good bit of that but I would have liked more. It also made me want to read more of the history of that long ago time.
Ellis Peters medieval Brother Cadfael series never disappoints. Remarkable historical detail, memorable characters and interesting plots. Historical mystery at its best.
This is my second book in the series. Very good character development and this was a real page turner with a few twists and turns.
Anything by this author gets a 5-Star rating from me! I love the Cadfael series.
An interesting read a page turner
I love the Cadfael series!
I love all the Cadfael books. A bit of mystery, a bit of love all set in a very realistic England centuries ago -1400s. The author knows the time and the history but spares us the worst of the cruelty and viciousness of that time. Always worth reading.
I love the Cadfael books and am beginning to read other of Ellis Peters’ books with the same level of enjoyment.
