A monk must find a killer among a flood of religious pilgrims in this medieval mystery by the Edgar Award–winning author: “A series like no other” (TheSan Diego Union-Tribune). In the year of our Lord 1141, civil war over England’s throne leaves a legacy of violence—and the murder of a knight dear to Brother Cadfael. And with gentle bud-strewn May, a flood of pilgrims comes to the celebration of … pilgrims comes to the celebration of Saint Winifred at the Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, carrying with it many strange souls—and perhaps the knight’s killer.
Brother Cadfael’s shrewd eyes see all: the prosperous merchant who rings false, an angelic lame boy, his beautiful dowerless sister, and two wealthy penitents. In the name of justice Cadfael decides to uncover the strange and twisted tale that accompanies these travelers. Instead he unearths a quest for vengeance, witnesses a miracle, and finds himself on a razor’s edge between death and the absolution of love.

I simply love Brother Cadfael and all the characters in these chronicles. Cadfael always solves the mystery. I’ve been reading through the chronicles, 10 so far, working on the 11th and when I start, I can’t seem to put them down.
Peter Ellis’ character Cadfael is very interesting. Set in Middle Ages, the plots are always very intriguing often with some surprises.
Good character development.
I love this series of books.
Great series..
Great character building. The phrasing was a little difficult at first, but I got used to it.
Always like Cadfael and his world.
I love all the Cadfael books.
Another wonderful Brother Cadfael mystery!
I was disappointed with this book and couldn’t finish it. The story was all about politics of the time with kings and queens I couldn’t relate to. I would have preferred something more like the “outlander” series, where you learned what it was like to live in the era.
Love every book in this series.
Love this series! Great characters, entertaining
Am enjoying this series of books so much — love the look at this historical period, and the characters are very well drawn!
Anything written by Ellis peters always uses a higher literary standard then many popular books. They include the history of the Wales/English border in the 1100s, as well as Many interesting herbal details.
I can’t stop reading Brother Cadfael. I like the period and the people and the mysteries that require the brother to solve them.
I love this meidival time period. Most of those historical novels are filled with brutality. These “less brutal” mystery series give the flavor of the living quarters, garments , the surrounding lands , everyday life in a Benedictine community and characters that you just like. I’ve read all of the series. Love them
I love the Brother Cadfael books. Endings are unpredictable and mystery and characters are absorbing.
A long-time Ellis Peters fan! There isn’t a bad book in the Cadfael series.
Sort of slow, like many of his books, but I liked it.
Always a good read.
