this was to much sci fi for me so not one I would read.
I enjoyed the plot development until I got to the ending, where it fell apart for me. It felt as if the ending belonged to a different version of the book, some idea that the author just couldn’t let go of but clearly did not fit. Perhaps it was a rush finish and just could have used filling out. As it was it was certainly a surprise wind-up, albeit a jarring one. Even for a book about robots, it didn’t make much sense.
Simple escapism, a nice way to spend a rainy weekend, nothing special
Not my kin of book too much science fiction for me
This book held my interest and had an interesting plot line. Suspenseful and entertaining. Worth a read.
Futuristic (?) look at Ali’s and what could happen, unless the AI develops feelings and curiosity and love. I didn’t expect the ending at all and I usually know what’s going to happen 3/4 of the way through. Love a surprise. Thanks JP Delaney
Unfortunately, I chose to read this book based on my enjoyment of a previous J. P. Delaney book. However, this one was very different. There is too much discussion on the philosophy of robots and artificial intelligence and since I am not a science fiction fan, this one did not appeal. The characters are well developed and the story was a different twist to the author’s previous style. But for me, I felt like the story dragged.
The ethical issues of artificial intelligence against human conscience was thought-provoking and will have you considering the issues the technology brings. There were exciting moments and a good ending, but it was not appealing to me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Ballantine Books for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
I’ve read a couple of others by this author and really enjoyed them — good, solid thrillers with psychological undertones. not so this one. I guess I’d categorize it as science-fiction, meets science meets thriller. I don’t care about robotics, and could not buy into the modern day version of the Stepford Wives. I did not get all that far in this book as a result. It was just too weird.
Such an ununsual read and I must admit, difficult to get into at first, but I really enjoyed it and in the end I couldn’t put it down. A great ending, too.
I’m hooked on this author!
This book is crazy and NOTHING like most of what I read. I am on record as being solidly anti sci-fi but this is JP Delaney we are talking about so naturally it is mesmerizing, compulsively readable, disturbing and fascinating.
I don’t want to give too much away but this book is part cautionary tale about artificial intelligence, part domestic thriller and part heartfelt story of a family navigating the challenges of a child with autism…
…and somehow it works!!!
It’s some crazy business but whoooooo, what a ride.
Not what I was expecting! I had in my mind what this book might be about, but whoa was I wrong. Interesting story about AI mixed with a mysterious missing wife. This book kept me guessing until the last page and it was very hard to put down once I started. What would happen if our mind could be downloaded into a robot, effectively living forever?? This story will leave you thinking about the future and what could one day be a reality. Very interesting take on a mystery!
What an interesting story. It is scary that it could almost be a possibility in our not to distance future! The one that I feel so very sorry for is little Danny, he is totally innocent of everything. You write a fantastic book JP Delaney, I can’t wait to read the next book of yours. Thanks for the great read!
Very interesting different type of suspense story. You will never guess the ending of this mystery no matter how hard you try…I was blown away!
If you loose your perfect love could you just build yourself another just like her to replace her?
Well written, great characters, amazing plot earns a 4 star rating.
I had to quit on this book. No basis in reality, nothing to redeem it as even a sci-fi genre. Ugh.
Hands down, no questions asked, I will read anything that Mr. Delaney writes. TPW just solidified that for me. I was sucked in (to my surprise) right from the start. I did not expect to have the feelings and compassion that I felt for “Abbie”. That is a nod to the author that he is able to pull those emotions from you (you’ll understand once you’ve read TPW, as I don’t want to spoil the plot). TPW is chock full of twists, turns, lies, deception and on some level, unconditional love. I am already anticipating Mr. Delaney’s next book.
Could not put this book down and read it in less than 24 hours!? While I would normally shy away from anything Sci-Fi this one had me hooked and my god am I glad I did! Incredible read, first by this author but I’ll surely be back for more!
I have enjoyed the other 2 books by J. P. Delaney. This one not so much. I got tired of being told how hot and sexy Abbie was. Tim was a BIG JERK. The POV was by a third person you don’t have any idea who it is until the end. I’m not even sure I do know who it was now. It does start off good, but starts a slow death until the last 20% of the book where it picks up pace again. This is just my opinion but you may really like it.
3 stars
This was one of those books that left me with the feeling of “WTF did I just read???” The Perfect Wife is definitely an engaging psychological thriller and was on pace to earn 4 stars from me. I read it while on vacation and I definitely looked forward to pool time so I could get back to it.
And then… the end. What?!?!?! Look, I’ll be honest here, Sci-Fi is not my usual genre but with Dark Matter, Recursion and 11/22/63 under my belt as of late, I thought I had made significant strides in this genre. And I was really hooked on Abbie for about 90% of this book. I couldn’t wait to see how things were going to shake out. And when they did, well, I just couldn’t.
I am in the minority here, so I would still encourage you to pick this one up for yourself and see what you think. But for me, this was one of those instances where the ending did me in.
Thank you to Random House Publishing for my copy of this book via NetGalley
I did not always now what was going on, some of it became clearer as I continued reading. But though it was a bit confusing I have to admit I enjoyed it. It had a few twists and turns I did not see coming (although I guess I should have). It makes me think and wonder how far they really have come in building “robots” that we could mistake as humans? I hope I am not around for it when it actually happens because of books like this all things seem probable!
Love the author– hated the book… I dislike books about science fiction, and that is what I thought of the book. Never expected that the perfect wife was a robot..
Did not finish it.
