“How long do you last in bed?” Those were her first words to me, swiftly followed up with, “And how big would you say you are?”Cue the record scratching, what?! Persephone Alexander. Math genius. Lover of blazers. The only girl I know who can make Heidi braids look sexy as hell. And she’s on a mission. Lose her virginity by the end of the semester. I walked in on her interview session for …
I walked in on her interview session for potential candidates (who even does that?) and saw straight through her brave front. She’s got a list of Firsts to accomplish like she’s only got months to live. I’ve decided to be her guide for all her firsts except one. Someone’s got to keep her out of trouble. I have one rule, no sex. We even shook on it.
I’ll help her find the right guy for the job. Someone like her doesn’t need someone like me and my massive…baggage for her first time.
Drinking at a bar. Check.
Partying all night. Double check.
Skinny dipping. Triple check.
She’s unlike anyone I’ve ever met. The walls I’d put up around my heart are slowly crumbling with each touch that sets fire to my soul.
I’m the first to bend the rules. One electrifying kiss changes everything and suddenly I don’t want to be her first, I want to be her only. But her plan was written before I came onto the scene and now I’m determined to get her to re-write her future with me.

Since I started this NA series with The Third Best Thing (Berk’s book) instead of this one that was the first, I already knew our Fulton U Trojans a bit.
I love college romances. In this book, the main female protagonist is Persephone “Seph” for her friends, a 18 year old girl who is very talented. We learn that she’s been groomed to be perfect with Math related stuff (and not just that) ever since she was a child, and she’s a prodigy and this is why she’s already doing her PhD at Fulton U. Being a genius has its perks but this doesn’t mean Seph’s life is perfect. Not only her roommate is a first class biatch, she doesn’t have any friends and because of her dad’s controlling ways she lost on many things. This is why Seph has the idea to create a list with things she never tried, and this includes sex. She mistakenly puts an ad on the campus’ forum to find a guy who will be pop her cherry, basically. This has disaster written all over it, but maybe this error will spin her life in a better direction.
Reece is a football player. From the first pages, he comes off as self-centered and ambitious. This will be his last year at Fulton, and he wish – no, he must be drafted, this is his dream. But with an ego this big, his coach thinks it’s better he doesn’t let popularity go straight to his head and ruin the perfect chances he has to go pro. Thanks to a mistake, Reece meets the nerdy Seph. He thinks her sex ad was too much and since he gathered her social awkwardness, he offers to help her cross some firsts off her list. Besides from sex. He won’t deflower her because he thinks she deserves better.
Well, Seph and Reece’s journey was intense. Seph was one of a kind character because she was nerdy and a bit weird sometimes, since she never properly interacted with people. She was lucky that her family was well off, but her father never let her do the things she likes, so it wasn’t all flowers and roses. Studying at Fulton was her first rebellion against her father, and she succeeded. But when the person that should love you is never happy of your achievements and never shows appreciation, you feel like you could be making a decision for them and not for yourself. In this story we see how Seph comes out of her shell and stands up for herself and goes after what she wants, despite some habits may be hard to drop.
Reece himself had some daddy issues because he felt like his father didn’t want him to play football and was jealous of his success. Outside he looks pompous, selfish, obsessed (don’t let me start on his shoes!) but we see that he isn’t like that. He is caring and he knows how to take care of people. When he meets Seph, he doesn’t want to indulge in her deflowering demand because he doesn’t want to take that important moment from her life. But he helps her through other firsts, at times with terrible outcomes and other times with nice ones. At some point he does something idiot, but in the end all goes well.
Now I’m excited for Nix’s book even though I sort of spoiled myself about bits of this story because he is mentioned in The Third Best Thing. But whatever! Still excited, because Nix was really mysterious and we all love mysterious guys. *wink*
If there was any case of the right place, wrong person…….Reece sitting down at Seph’s table in that coffee shop sure was it. Turned out to be the best mistake of his life.
Watching the unlikely friendship and relationship develop between football star Reece and quirky & nerdy Persephone (also known as Seph) was so much fun. They couldn’t have been more opposite, but Reece saw something in her that drew him to her. And it wasn’t your typical nerd / jock story – it really was so much more than that. I’m glad they didn’t rush into her “devirginizing” so quickly, as I think when they finally were together, it was special – truly, it couldn’t have been more perfect. And for someone who has never had any real friends in her life, for Seph to be welcomed and wholly accepted by the guys on Reece’s team – absolutely loved it!
All of the secondary in the characters – Nix, LJ, Berk, Marisa – they all made this story even more memorable and I cannot wait to go back and spend more time at Fulton University!
My first by this author and OMG…where has she been all my life??
My goodness, this book was so much FUN! Full of witty banter, adorably lovable characters, and plenty of heartfelt moments. I didn’t want to put this book down.
Inexperienced and eager to learn, and wanting to have some fun without her controlling father around, Seph puts out an ad. An unusual ad.
An accidental meeting has Reece sitting down at her table…he thinks he’s meeting his PR person…she thinks he’s answering the ad. Cue the awkward Q & A.
Curious and wanting to bring out her inner wild child, Reece can’t stop thinking about her and he finds it difficult for to leave her alone.
Reece and Seph are SO cute together. He wants to help her, he wants to guide her, HE wants to be her first. His protectiveness is sexy AF.
I smiled, I laughed, I swooned to the moon and back.
After finishing this one, I immediately dove into book two.
Reese and Seph are two very different people and when they meet accidentally. Reese feels like he can help her and she feels he can help her. Can two different people with different paths be together. Great characters and storyline highly recommended
The Perfect First is the first book in the Fulton U Series by Maya Hughes.
“This was going to be the year of perfect firsts.”
Persephone “Seph” Alexander is a mathematical prodigy who is attending Fulton University. She is hoping to enter a PHD program and due to her father’s heavy influence, she is under a lot of pressure. Seph’s father is the definition is helicopter parent but multiplied by a hundred. Seph decided that she is going to start experiencing life, starting with a list.
“She’d gotten so fully and completely under my skin, I didn’t know how I’d existed before I met her.”
Reece Michaels is a senior at Fulton University and is the star receiver in the football team. He is hoping to catch the eyes of scouts for the NFL so his complete focus is the game until a random encounter at the coffee shop leaves him intrigue about a cute girl taking interviews to take her virginity.
“I’d give her the other firsts, as many as I could, because if I gave her too much, I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from never wanting to stop.”
Reece couldn’t help but think about Seph so he decided that he would help her with all her firsts except for doing the deed. Each check mark on Seph’s list is a check mark on each others hearts.
“I’ve been dreaming of you every night, and if I’m still dreaming, I don’t want to wake up. I need you.”
These two brought me so much joy. They were so adorable and just so sweet. The character development in this book was absolutely everything. This was swooning and just so sweet. I can’t even. I can’t wait for the next book!
“She was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen. More than any win on the field, any pair of limited-edition Adidas, she was so many things, and I couldn’t even believe she was there with me.”
Seph finds her Perfect First
I enjoyed this story by Maya that takes place at Fulton University between Seph and Reece. They both have lived wildly different lives but because of a mistake of Reece’s part and their first meeting, their lives become intricately entwined and brings about new experiences for both of them and learning truths about themselves they never knew
Looking forward to Nix’s story next
I’m going to be honest, the young adult trope usually isn’t my go-to for reading. Most often than not I just get discouraged by the immaturity.
But let me tell you, I was happily surprised by this story from Ms. Hughes.
The story was about college-aged characters but there was a depth to them that you don’t normally see, and I greatly appreciated it.
I enjoyed Seph’s maturity and her wide-eyed innocence. I could empathize with her social awkwardness and wanting to be a part of something. Her earlier childhood was nothing but tragic in its own way and her chance for rebellion was fantastic.
Reece, what a character. His maturity evolved even more throughout the book and I was rejoicing in it!
The chemistry between Reece and Persephone was beautiful to read. It was a bit of a slow burn with the friendship aspect that really rings true.
The secondary characters are fantastic and bring so much more to the story! I cannot wait to read more about them in upcoming stories!
“Better than FINE!” A PERFECT MUST-READ!!
I grabbed a copy of author Maya Hughes’s THE PERFECT FIRST when it was first released, but then life got really busy. So, like a fine bottle of wine, I put it in my Kindle Unlimited cabinet and let it age until I could get back to it. I wondered if all of the hype over this particular book was over-blown but kept my doubts to myself. I wanted to read the novel with an open mind, so it was aged a bit more. This weekend, I finally made time to read THE PERFECT FIRST! The “hype” is completely true! THE PERFECT FIRST is the PERFECT coming-of-age, young adult, slow-burn romance novel! With all of the feels a romance reader looks for, plus the author’s easy-to-read prose, author Maya Hughes gives readers one of the most compelling romance novels I’ve ever read. So compelling, in fact, that I had to go back and purchase a copy of THE PERFECT FIRST to put it in the FAVORITES collection on my Kindle. The slow-burn romance between Reese – the BMOC football player and the talented math nerd, Seph, pulled me so deeply into the story, real-life responsibilities took second place. I can wash clothes tomorrow, right? However, the story in this book is better than amazing, it is also gut-wrenching, hilarious, compelling and phenomenal. The characters, including the secondary characters, are so well-developed and multi-faceted that they seemed real. Thereby, making the reality of the world author Hughes has developed incredibly realistic and inviting. The story is complex and incredibly romantic, the characters are realistic and worthy, and the prose was descriptive and informal; yet all of these aspects put together by author Hughes work together to make THE PERFECT FIRST one of the BEST romantic novels of 2019. The wine is ready, so purchase your copy of THE PERFECT FIRST today! Happy pages!
I became an early fan of Maya Hughes back in 2018 with her debut, Shameless King. For whatever reason (or more specifically “too many books, too little time”), I didn’t keep up with her Kings of Rittenhouse series, but I was excited to see she was launching a new NA series. The Perfect First sounded like a fun and sexy read. And you know what? It was!
This isn’t the first “virgin looking to lose her virginity” book I’ve read, but this one still stands out from the pack for me. I really liked both Seph and Reece. Who doesn’t love to see a geekier girl land a football player? I sure do. They have a fun meet cute, what with Reece thinking Seph was going to help him with his PR and Seph thinking Reece showed up for her interview of candidates to help with her virginity. I really enjoyed watching this slow burn unfold between them, and watching each character really come into their own made it all the better.
Favorite Quotes:
I wanted sweaty, crazy, blow your socks off, curl your toes sex, dammit. I wanted intense feelings and to finally let go for once.
A sweet and sexy young adult romance. Seph and Reece meet in a bizarre misunderstanding. This leads to him helping her have some social interaction. She sees his warm protective side and he sees the amazing young woman she’s hiding.

Please, sir, I want some more! Seriously, these characters and this adorable story blew me away. I wasn’t expecting it to fill me with so many feels but I’m a goner. When I saw that there is another book in this series coming out this summer with another one of the characters from this book I was floored! I can’t wait for it.
The premise for this story is adorable and had so many funny moments. I caught myself laughing out loud through some of the banter and situations at the beginning of the book. It was too perfect. I liked that while the premise leaves room for things on the lighter side like awkward moments and discovering new things and people, it also had some deeper rooted issued in the background that the characters had to overcome.
The characters are so golden in this book. All of them. I loved Seph and Reece. They both had so much character growth. They both had their own family problems to deal with in the story. I liked the progression of both of their personal journeys. The side characters were just as amazing. I couldn’t get enough of them. Many books have side characters as filler, but not this book. I wanted to see more of Reece’s friends – Nix, Berk, and LJ. Even Marisa, LJ’s friend. They all had personality in the little parts when we get to see them. I love how they openly and warmly accepted Seph into their friend group without question. Even before Seph and Reece started their relationship. I can’t wait to hear their stories with the coming books in the series. I also liked that Graham, the potential guy that Seph had chosen to lose her virginity with prior to hanging out with Reece, turned out to be pretty decent. He wasn’t bitter about Seph ghosting him and he wasn’t an asshole. I assumed that he would be villainized in some way or turn out to be a jerk but he wasn’t and I was glad for it.
I also loved the family aspects seen in this book. We get to see two very different family dynamics. Reece and his beautiful family are the picture perfect family while Seph’s family life was less than spectacular. Scary even. The domestic abuse aspect was only lightly touched upon in this and while I don’t mind seeing some serious things in a book and prefer it that way to make things more real, the lighter touch worked well in this story. It was developed enough to get what was going on without being very triggering.
The romance was hot, sweet, and amazing. It was everything! The chemistry between Seph and Reece was electric. They were so easy with each other from the beginning like they already belonged together. I loved experiencing all of Seph’s firsts with the two of them. They seemed to bring out such wonderful things in each other. Seph helped Reece take down his emotional walls and Reece helped Seph come out of her naive shell and experience life. This is a slow-burn romance that will stay with me a long while.
Overall, my expectations were completely smashed to pieces with this book. It was amazing and I loved every moment. You can count on me to start stalking this author now because I am smitten with her writing. I can’t wait for Nix’s story this summer! I’m hooked!
Maya Hughes has started an addictive series featuring irresistible footballers in Fulton U. Despite the countless sports romances floating around, the unique creativity and authentic quality of this narrative prevents it from becoming reused material. With innumerous sweet moments, intense chemistry and stomach-aching humour, The Perfect First ensures your attention is captured and thoughts consumed by this endearing romance of perfect firsts.
“I was tired of being me, and the only way to change that was to stop being afraid of what I wanted.”
Persephone Alexander’s innocence is charming and refreshing, though her chaste nature doesn’t mean she’s naive. Unashamed and unassuming in conversation, her lack of tact creates an amusing meet cute situation that left me guffawing in absolute delight! Quiet, fierce rebellion unveils itself, as Seph’s determination to experience certain moments before she’s suffocated by an authoritative father’s demands comes to fruition, making me invested in this heroine’s transformation from introverted to free-willed with confidence.
“I’d give her the other firsts, as many as I could, because if I gave her too much, I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from never wanting to stop.”
I love a conceited football hero—the cockier, the better—however there’s no denying that hidden sweetness and kind-heartedness creates an irresistible character with dimension. Despite Reece Michaels odd but entertaining meet cute with Seph, he isn’t deterred by the unusual situation. By starting a friendship, Reece provides Seph more than firsts; he also brings friendships and connections, both encouraging and heart-warming gestures that allow this quirky heroine to flourish into a self-assured woman who understands her self-worth.
“She’d gotten so fully and completely under my skin, I didn’t know how I’d existed before I met her.”
“Sweet” isn’t an accurate definition to truthfully encapsulate the undeniable connection between Seph and Reece. Intense and unbreakable, the friendship they form transitions into an undeniable, romantic bond full of immense affection and charming chemistry that latches itself to your mind, ensnaring your full attention. It tugs on your heart-strings, dousing you in all the good feelings that come with reading a humorous, contemporary romance. Wherever Maya Hughes directs this series, I’m keen to have more of these footballers!
Oh my Goodness I loved this story, this is the beginning of what will be another fantastic series by Maya Hughes. The Perfect Firsts had me sucked in from the very start,it is such a sweet ,funny,Romantic and steamy tale of Love being found in the most unexpected way. This is what happens to Reece and Seph opposites in every way except for the fact that they have issues with their parents. And what starts as ticking things off a list of Firsts that Seph compiled to achieve before she had to leave, manifests into something so much more than both Reece or Seph thought could be possible. They couldn’t be more different but the attraction and friendship that develops was such a joy to read,I relished this book in every way.
The characters were so well thought out and they all have a story to tell that I am eager to learn more about each of them.I am addicted to anything Maya writes and I adored this book, its a fabulous read and I highly recommend it.
Do you remember your first play date? First kiss? First time playing hooky from school? Well this is some of the stuff that Persephone Alexander has never gone through and it takes one big man to make her see what her life can really be like. Then we have Reece who is the next big thing in campus and perfect for Seph in every way. I loved how Maya Hughes shows us how well deprived Seph is while growing up. We have Reece making her feel alive for the first time in her life. All in all this was good only wish we saw more of Reece in it. If you want a tons of first, new loves and most of all a love from start to finish Maya Hughes is your author.
“I received an eBook copy from the publisher for the purpose of an honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own.”
I invested in this story on pages one. Seph is a beautiful sexy young naïve genius who is a mere 19 year old college senior who has no life experiences because she has been home schooled and ruled by her domineering father. She is attending college for at least this semester in Philadelphia her first time away from her father and her strict upbringing. Realizing she has no friends and has no idea of how to live in the moment, Seph makes a bucket list of sorts and places an ad on the college personal ads for someone to take her virginity. She sets up interviews at the local coffee shop. Reese is a football superstar at the university, he’s sexy, funny, handsome, talented just getting by at college cause he is working to enter the NFL draft. After blowing up at a recent press conference his coach arranges for Reese to meet a publicist to help him navigate his next conference and not blow his chance as a NFL top pick due to his history of being a selfish, show off player. The meeting is incidentally the same date and time that Seph has advertised beer interviews. Reece arrives and see the uptight blazer dressed Seph and mistakes her for his appointment. Here the story actually unfolds as Reece becomes Seph’s first interview. The chemistry between the two is off the charts and he can’t believe her naivety and he can’t help but feel protective. When the Publicist enters the coffee shop and approaches him and introduces herself, he departs Seph’s table and goes on to his own meeting. When he realizes the number of men lining up for a crack at Seph, he excuses himself and informs the line of potentials that the ad was a joke. Only one other person is interviewed and it’s someone Reece knows and he hopes Seph will change her mind. Eventually Reece agrees to help Seph with her list but he will not take he virginity. This is the story of their adventure as Reece helps Seph live her bucket list and he pursues his. It’s a story of trust, love, fate, laughter, and friendship. I read this book in one setting the story is very endearing and realistic. A definite five plus plus read.
What an incredible start to a new series by Maya Hughes.
The Perfect First was a page turner, it was funny, swoony, steamy as hell and an easy paced read. I don’t often read NA but every so often I dip my toe into the pool of a million and one books and read one, and surprisingly enough I am never really disappointed. I certainly was not disappointed when picking this one up. I immediately become smitten with Reece and Seph.
Seph was quirky, to say the least, but seriously not what I expected AT ALL. She was shy, a virgin, a girl who didn’t really have any friends as she struggled with socializing, she was forever trying to live up to her fathers’ impossible expectations and standards, he expecting nothing less than perfection from her. She carried this with her day in and day out, trying to live up to these standards. Once out of home, and in college and not constantly under her father watchful eyes, she starts to blossom a little, she wants to try all these things that she misses out on. All her Firsts. From small things to larger things such as her virginity. So in search of someone to take it from her, she places an ad in the paper, trying to find a suiter.
Reece is a college football player.. A superstar actually and he is not short of women he can bed but when he comes across an interview of Seph’s, he can’t help but be intrigued about the girl. Something pulled his attention to her and what starts out as a friendship progresses into something more, but I would never expect for these two to be friends, let alone more… They were just so different and you’d never think they would be compatible but as the relationship between them strengthens and they become infatuated with each other, they can’t get enough of each other, and slowly Seph starts to break out of her shell and starts to become the woman she was meant to be, without her fathers domineering ways and expectations. She grows, they both do.
I can tell you now, this does not lack for heat. DAMN. it was so god damn steamy, not exactly what I expect when I read NA but that’s not a bad thing, I am a sucker for all things steamy and heated. These two were a quirky combination and it was fun, funny and exciting to read as their bond deepened. It was also a delight to see how the author played them both out, how she played Seph coming out of her shell after meeting Reece and how their relationship deepened. It was amazing. It was addicting. It was fun and it was HOT. It held my attention from start to finish and it was extremely well written and easy to read, easy to lose yourself in the story, and that’s exactly what I look for in ANY romance! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I can’t wait to see what the author has up her sleeve next for this series!
5- Swoony-HOT- Stars!
Just like in any other Maya Hughes book, these characters will steal your heart and you will get swept away in their story! Reece, the cocky college football star, and Seph, the naive and inexperienced math genius, meet by accident; and when they do – you feel their chemistry immediately. You cringe with every awkward question by Seph, and swoon every time Reece attempts to make her comfortable by humoring her with his wit and charm. They stole my heart from the beginning.
I absolutely loved Persephone “Seph” – she is unlike most heroines you meet in the romance genre. She is brilliant – a genius actually – gorgeous, and doesn’t even realize it, and oh so quirky. She is ready to step outside the fishbowl life that her parents have created for her, and when she does, it is like watching a little kid on Christmas morning. But the best part of watching her outside of her comfort zone was seeing how her reactions affected Reece. This guy was knocked down from his “I’m the best thing ever” status to a guy just trying to win a girl’s heart by starting from ground zero and making her smile and have fun. He was real. He was vulnerable with her, and compassionate, and gentle, AND sexy!!!! I fell for him hard and daydreamed that he was my college boyfriend. 😉
Both Reece and Seph have their own insecurities that cause rifts and post questions with their relationship. But when they were able to rely on the other – not only in a physical sense, but as best friends would – it made me want to stand up and cheer for both of them. They were so honest, open and comfortable with the other. Their relationship developed organically, and that made me love them all the more.
M Hughes writes like a poet all while using humor and wit to create a story that is endearing and will make you swoon. The secondary characters are fun, flirty, and provided easy banter and entertaining friendships to Reece & Seph’s story. I’m hoping that one of these guys’ stories will be coming our way from M Hughes soon!! Well done!!
The Perfect First was the perfect story of how to find love in the most unexpected and unorthodox ways.
Reece is a college football star who has an ego to match his status. Reece finds himself in need of some help to clean up his image with the help of a publicity coach but instead he runs into Persephone.
Persephone is a math genius, violin player, who has lived her entire life under her fathers thumb. She feels as if she hasn’t had the full college experience so she decides to rectify that.
Seph is interviewing guys to have sex with when Reece walks in and sits down in front of her. She proceeds to ask him questions and he looks a bit confused. But he agrees to help her with her bucket list but they agree there will no sex between them.
As both of these characters go through the bucket list and different activities there is no doubt serious sexual tension. When these two are together there is so much fire and lust!!
I absolutely loved this book! These characters were absolutely amazing and I didn’t want to stop reading!! I could t get enough of the story and wanted more.
I am so beyond excited that this is going to be a series and I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book!!
Thank you so much to Maya for the free review copy in exchange for my honest opinion!
{I received this as an ARC in exchange for an Honest Review}
This story was absolutely incredible. It was so much fun to read!! I enjoyed every single minute of this book! Steph and Reece are so freaking cute!! This story is so unique!! I fell in love with Steph and Reece! Steph is amazing! She has been held back by her parents her whole life and now she is taking charge and getting in all her first while she can. She is so serious and bold. She is funny and strong. I absolutely love her. She is a character that you can relate to and really connect with. Reece is such a kind hearted jerk lol. In the begging he is full of himself, but you love him anyways. Getting to know him and watch him fall for Steph was amazing!! I Love Reece and his determination. He never stops fighting for what he wants. This whole book was wonderful. It’s funny and sweet. It was cute but also SEXY AS HELL!!! I enjoyed this book immensely!!! I Highly Highly recommend this!! Maya will having you falling in love!!
P.S. Maya has officially become one of my All Time Favorite Authors. I have read this and “Ruthless King” by her and I absolutely loved both! Her writing style is so incredible. It is so easy to fall in love with her words. I love reading her books. I can’t wait for more in this series and to read more of her works!!
HOLY CRAP WAS THIS GOOD!!! I was immediately sucked in by Seph and Reese. I read this whole book in one sitting, only about 4 hours. Seph was someone who I could someone relate to, I’m in no way a nerd like her, but I was also naive beyond belief. I love how blunt she spoke, how incredibly smart she was and her amazing sense of humor. I also loved how Reese was her perfect match. When we got to see these two together for the first time, I just knew they’d be perfect for each other! Their mistake meeting, his alpha tendencies peeking through and his weeding out people. The whole thing was HYSTERICAL! The fact that Seph and Reese were so different made everything so perfect. They were the perfect jock/nerd match up in so many ways. He was so perfect for her, because although he was the jock, he was just so genuine.
One of my favorite things about relationships like this is how they were friends before they were lovers. These two became really good friends and I loved that! I also adored how his friends totally adopted her as one of their own. Berk, LJ and Nix were hysterical when it came to her. I love how she went toe to toe and wasn’t afraid to be around them. Melissa was such a great addition too, she made it a little easier for her to be around the guys.
My absolute favorite part of this story though, was how Reese helped her become strong woman. Seph was so good at just letting people walk all over her when we were introduced to her. She was so used to being told what to do, that her rebellion was a lot different. Her rebellion was hysterical, but I loved how Reese really helped her out of her shell. He helped her believe in herself and show her how proud she should be of herself.
I cannot wait to see what is going to come from this series. Berk, LJ and Nix were hysterical and I can’t wait to see what she has up her sleeves for them!
