Relationships are awful. They’ll kill you, right up to the point where they start saving your life. Paul and Alice’s half-sister Eloise is getting married! In London! There will be fancy hotels, dinners at “it” restaurants and a reception at a country estate complete with tea lights and embroidered cloth napkins. They couldn’t hate it more. The People We Hate at the Wedding is the story of a less … Hate at the Wedding is the story of a less than perfect family. Donna, the clan’s mother, is now a widow living in the Chicago suburbs with a penchant for the occasional joint and more than one glass of wine with her best friend while watching House Hunters International. Alice is in her thirties, single, smart, beautiful, stuck in a dead-end job where she is mired in a rather predictable, though enjoyable, affair with her married boss. Her brother Paul lives in Philadelphia with his older, handsomer, tenured track professor boyfriend who’s recently been saying things like “monogamy is an oppressive heteronormative construct,” while eyeing undergrads. And then there’s Eloise. Perfect, gorgeous, cultured Eloise. The product of Donna’s first marriage to a dashing Frenchman, Eloise has spent her school years at the best private boarding schools, her winter holidays in St. John and a post-college life cushioned by a fat, endless trust fund. To top it off, she’s infuriatingly kind and decent.
As this estranged clan gathers together, and Eloise’s walk down the aisle approaches, Grant Ginder brings to vivid, hilarious life the power of family, and the complicated ways we hate the ones we love the most in the most bitingly funny, slyly witty and surprisingly tender novel you’ll read this year.

I struggled through this book. No one in this family is likable. Everyone has issues, they are all nursing a hurt or a wrong they felt was done to them. All of their relationships stink. Totally painful.
This book was recommended on a few lists, and by a librarian, but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

This was a different kind of story and I enjoyed it. The writing was well done. I had a hard time warming up to the characters until about midway through the book but the fact that I kept reading was due to the story line–I found I couldn’t quit reading because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. I liked the ending.
I hated this book. Don’t waste your money
I really am not a fan of this book! I found it to be extremely slow and somewhat boring. There was nothing to keep me reading —- as a result I didn’t finish it — which is something I NEVER do ! Just can’t recommend it. I really tried to but………
I found the characters disgusting in the way they treated each other. It was so dark and gloomy. Even the wedding day did not redeem it. I would not suggest this book to any of my friends or family.
I couldn’t get past the second chapter of this book. This book wasn’t funny nor interesting at all.
Could not finish, it was not a good book as far as I am concerned. Rambling, foul language, uninteresting people.
Thanks for a good read.
Good story but I thought it had a weak ending.
I’ve got to be honest, it just isn’t for me. I’m going to try again soon, but so far I haven’t been able to really become invested. I’m probably 30% of the way in. May return to later and try again.
Not interesting, the protagonists are not compelling, not likable.
Too much sex.
It was a okay read.
Did not like this book. Awful characters, could not feel any empathy for them. Kept hoping it would get better. It did not.
There was not one character in the book I liked or cared about. Couldn’t wait to reach the end.
This book is incredibly well written but it is not the light-hearted wedding romp the reviews I read made it out to be.
This is one of the worst books I’ve ever read,I have no trouble with gay couples but this was way too explicit. Nothing in the description prepares any one for what’s to come.
Unexpected characters and great plot line. Fun read!
Ver minimal plot line and often graphic at times. Would not recommend
I had trouble warming up to the 2 siblings that were the main figures in this book. I guess maybe that was the point but still…..loathing them took a lot of energy and it made everyone else seem less than for putting up with their muleishness. By the time I could see them evolving I had given up caring much.
