She’s come to the New World to escape a perilous past. But has it followed her to these far shores?
It is 1704 when Frenchwoman Geneviève Gaillain and her sister board the frigate Pélican bound for the distant Louisiana colony. Both have promised to marry one of the rough men toiling in this strange new world in order to escape suffering in the old. Geneviève knows life won’t be easy, but at … life won’t be easy, but at least here she can establish a home and family without fear of persecution for her outlawed religious beliefs.
When she falls in love with Tristan Lanier, an expatriate cartographer-turned-farmer whose checkered past is shrouded in mystery, Geneviève realizes that even in this land of liberty one is not guaranteed peace. Trouble is brewing outside the fort between the French colonists and the native people surrounding them. And an even more sinister enemy may lurk within. Could the secret Geneviève harbors mean the undoing of the colony itself?
Gulf Coast native Beth White brings vividly to life the hot, sultry South in this luscious, layered tale.

My first exposure to Beth White’s writing and I thought it was delightful. I’ll definitely read more of her work in the future.
“The Pelican Bride” by Beth White is the first book in a three-part series known as the Gulf Coast Chronicles. This breathtaking novel takes the reader on a journey through the perilous Louisiana colony in 1704. Fleeing religious persecution in France, Geneviève Gaillain arrives in the New World as a mail-order bride; however, she has a secret …
a wonderful story, with very likable characters.
For years, I’ve been a fan of historical fiction because it teaches me about historical characters and eras without the tedium of normal history books. The Pelican Bride is no exception and, indeed, is one of the better examples of fine research. Food, clothing, shelter, surroundings, language, culture – all of these combine in this story of the …
Great book that embellishes upon true events in history. It contains interactions between the French, French Canadians, the British and different Indian peoples. Diplomacy, treason, romance, danger, religious controversy, this book contains it all and more. It’s well written and covers a lot of territory. It kept my interest throughout until it’s …
I loved learning history that I was totally unfamiliar with, written in an enjoyable way. I enjoyed that the book was engaging without relying on sexually explicit scenes and that the storyline made the history come alive.
Enjoyed reading this book!
Loved this story – historical but total strength in characters. Will be looking for other stories by this author.
Good read
Very predictable. Quick read, though.
Predictable historical romance .
Great
The book is set in an interesting and unusual time period. I would classify it as Christian historical fiction with romantic elements. I enjoyed reading about the central characters, but the plot encompassed dozens of couples, bogging the reader down with endless lists of additional characters. The writing degrades in quality as the novel …
Provided a view of our country I didn’t know about. The writing was so good I was transported back in time and experienced what the characters in the book did. The mud, heat, poor living conditions, struggling to survive. Great book.
Entertaining story, but several times i had to go back a page to see who was talking. Lots of action, but transitions from 1 event to another was a bit rough. Still a good read.
