Excellent story all the way around!! Loved it!!
Intelligent and entertaining
I liked it so much I immediately got the sequel. This book was unusual but compelling. I wanted to know what would happen. Many twists as you read through the series. Recommended.
While there was an interesting analogy between the game of chess and the young woman’s life, I would have liked to have known that this was a short book, part 1 of a series, before I started to read it because it’s not a stand alone book. It ended before the story did.
This book was freebie I downloaded via BookBub. I hadn’t heard of this book/series, so I had no idea what it was really about. It honestly isn’t the type of story I would typically read. All I have to say is wow! I could hardly put this book down once I started reading it! The story and the characters intrigued me right off the bat. I read this book within two days and immediately downloaded the second book. I will definitely be finishing all the books in this series! I will also be looking other books up that were written by Skye Warren.
The Pawn (Endgame #1) by Skye Warren – I’m like a glutton for punishment! Skye Warren books always leave me asking wth at the cliffhangers! I think its addicting! So clearly, you are going to want the rest of the serial! Happy Reading!
This book is edgy, and sexy and all the things a good dark romance book should be. I really enjoyed it!
Definitely getting the rest of the series
I have a lot of phenomenal things to say about this story but they are all clouded by my rage towards the book’s misrepresentation of what it truly is. You see, this book is not the story of anything … yet. This book is merely the tip of what is going to be an epic story, imo, eventually. It is the compounding of conflict over conflict, layer over layer and twist upon twist. But that is all. And that kids is NOT what one would call a full length novel. THAT is a misrepresentation that may not be a big deal to most, but for me … I just can’t get past it and it has soured this story for me. I had no idea while I read this story that it would end in such a manner until I was about 62% in and realized … wait, what? how am i this far in and all this up in the air ….
It should be noted that I have no problem what so ever with stories that are spread over multiple publications. My problem is with the misrepresentation of such stories as something they are not.
I absolutely love Skye Warren and all the books I have read by her. When I first came across The Pawn I was unsure if it was something I would like. I finally said ok lets try it and I was hooked. I kept reading the all of this collection in a matter of a week or 2. I recommend this book and this series to anyone looking for something that will keep you on your toes, looking for more, and at times scare you with how twisted it can get.
I found this gem in the Spring Romance Box Set; It grabs you from the start and takes you on a dark and dangerous journey of 2, intelligent people, using their wit and calculations to come out the winner. The author uses the game of chess as a metaphor to carry the story along. My only problem was I did not know from the beginning that it was a trilogy, so I was disappointed when I got to the cliffhanger.
This is a pretty steamy book. What I don’t like is, like many others it leaves you hanging unless you buy other books in the series.
Summary
Avery James once had a rich life with a father who loved her so dearly; she came from a noble family. At least, that’s what she thought. But her dad was suddenly beaten up for being a fraud, then ended up losing everything – his dignity, his wealth, and his health. Because of this, Avery had to quit her private college to take care of her dad but when their house, the only thing her mom left, was about to be taken away, she couldn’t let that happen. Left with an indecent way to get the money she needed through an auction, she had to give up her virginity and be in someone’s complete possession for 30 days. With that money, she could save the house, afford his dad’s hospital bills and medical needs, and possibly still continue her college. But there was something more disturbing to her than losing her virginity – the man who bought her was Gabriel, the same man who tore down her father and destroyed their lives.
Review
The Pawn by Skye Warren is a dark contemporary romance that was hard to put down. It was very intriguing. A girl lost her dignity to a guy who loathed her father and has taken her for revenge. Or maybe not…
I think Avery’s character was very typical, and so is her story. From riches to rags, she was left with no choice but to sell her dignity to save her entire life. The concept is definitely not something original, but what made me keep on reading this book was Gabriel. His character was very mysterious – you wouldn’t know whether he was helping Avery or simply putting her at the palm of his hands. In fact, until the end, I had no idea whether Gabriel just wanted to take revenge or was really into her. But of course, I have to find out through the second book. Apparently, I have come across a book series and had no idea. I know I should’ve checked on the product description first, or at least, I should’ve read the reviews, but I instantly got interested because it was free, and I loved the title and cover. I thought it was another intelligently written story that would feed my knowledge with philosophy or life strategy because the author used a chess piece to describe the book. I wanted to find out what the title meant, then I realized he was referring to Avery as “the pawn,” a person he used for his own purpose. I laughed at myself for judging the book by its cover when I found out it was an erotic novel. But the good thing is, it is way much better than 50 Shades of Grey. In fact, this is nothing like that book because it is smarter, more gripping, and more sensual.
I’m giving this 4 out of 5 stars. The concept isn’t original, but the storyline and the author’s approach in enticing the readers is very intriguing. I recommend this to mature readers who love twisted romance. It’s a page-turner and I’ll certainly read the next book.
Story of power and deception, left me hanging.
Read the whole series. Recommend her books to all. Trying read all the authors’ books. Especially during stuck at home.
Had to buy rest of series because I couldn’t put it down.
Great book with excellent plot. Only problem is it ends without proper wrap up as it’s one of a series.
This book definitely kept my attention to where I was fighting against sleep just to keep reading. I am a big fan of this author and her writing.
A quick read and a page-turner if you like dark romance.
