The Patriot Bride was a really interesting and enjoyable story to read! It is book four in the Daughters of the Mayflower series. All books in the series are stand alone novels and The Patriot Bride is definitely my favorite of all of the books so far.
The intrigue and danger relating to Matthew and Faith’s spying activities made for plenty of tension throughout the novel. And I loved the way these two fell for each other. It was sweet and natural and romantic in the midst of quite a trying and unsure time. I enjoyed this exciting, patriotic story from the first page to the last!

This is the fourth book in The Daughters of the Mayflower series and it is certainly a worthy addition! The Patriot Bride is an exciting tale of events leading up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence and it has a heroine and hero who are equally dedicated to the Patriot cause. Faith Lytton is just 10 when we first meet her in 1752 at her family home in Virginia and it is apparent that she is an independent little girl who knows no fear and feels no limitations due to being a female. The story soon advances to 1774 and Faith Lytton Jackson is now a wealthy 32 year old widow living in Boston and she is still fearless and independent. This is the time when the American colonies were facing increasing oppression from England and the move for independence was beginning. Faith is an old friend of the respected soldier George Washington and she agrees to become a messenger to deliver secret information to help the Patriots (colonists) in their cause. Matthew Weber is a friend of Benjamin Franklin and he becomes Faith’s contact. This is the beginning of an association that will alter both of their lives forever!
I love historical fiction so I truly enjoyed this book. Faith and Matthew are both brave people who love God and who value the Patriot cause and Faith is more than happy to use her wealth and her social influence to secretly further this effort. I loved how independent and feisty she is and her humor and creativity are to be admired. Matthew is the perfect hero and I was touched that he had never been in a serious relationship and he was very reluctant to admit his deep feelings for Faith. In one meeting he tells Faith “I allowed my fear to rule my mind and my heart. I was so worried about what might happen to you that I slammed the door of my heart and I am afraid it hurt you.” (p. 113).
And later, “He moved closer to her and wanted to drink in those green eyes. Her face was framed by her dark blond curls. He closed his eyes and tried to memorize the ways her eyes smiled at him, the lines of her face.” (p. 121). Oh! Be still my heart!
Author Kimberley Woodhouse has given readers a story of finding love and friendship when you least expect it. There is also adventure, secrecy, and a reminder of the danger that the colonists faced in their struggle for freedom. Bible scripture is quoted often in this book and and a strong belief in God and the power of prayer is very evident. I heartily recommend The Patriot Bride to readers who enjoy Christian fiction and historical romance.

I’ve been enjoying The Daughters of the Mayflower series, especially the historical aspect of the different time periods and areas. The Patriot Bride by Kimberley Woodhouse is a strong and engaging addition to the series. The settings in Virginia and Boston during the Revolutionary War captured my interest. The characters are well-developed, and I especially loved Faith’s strength and independence. She just stepped up and did what needed to be done to take care of herself and those she loved. Brimming with historical detail, it’s apparent that Woodhouse has done much research about the era and what life was like in those days. I’m looking forward to the other books in the series.

This is the fourth installment in The Daughters of the Mayflower series and I highly recommend this series. The Patriot Bride takes us to the Revolutionary War Era and you feel like you are in the midst of the adventure, as Ms. Woodhouse writes of fictional characters amid the real life characters of George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. You can feel the tension and heart pounding moments as Matthew and Faith pass messages for the cause of the Patriots. Throw in a little romance and faith elements and you have the makings of a great read. I won’t go into detail but the mouse scene had me squirming. I loved reading The Declaration of Independence at the end. What bravery these people had to stand up for what was right. I love learning history while enjoying a great fictional story and this author shines in that department.

Oh my, where do I begin? This was beyond anything I imagined. Learning history I didn’t know through fiction is fun. I learned some real things about George Washington and Benjamin Franklin, who were some of the main characters in this novel, by reading the author’s notes at the end. Fascinating! This was set during the Revotionary War with Paul Revere and Patrick Henry among others featured in the story. Faith and Matthew, the main female and male characters, however, were fictionalized. They were interesting characters. Faith was a woman to be reckoned with. Strong, opinionated, and a take charge kind of woman. I totally admired her. Matthew was working for the cause of the Patriots and together with Faith were passing coded messages back and forth. After all, who would ever think of a woman as a spy? British Soldiers were everywhere, so sneaking around in the dark was very dangerous. They pretty much laid their lives on the line with every rendezvous. But both were single with no children, no ties except to help the Patriot Army defect the British for American freedom. But it also helps make the story a little more interesting with a little romance. It was just a really feel good read and I throughly enjoyed it!
Each Daughters of the Mayflower novels progresses a little more with the history of this great nation and the sacrifices made to insure our freedom today.

I began reading The Daughters of the Mayflower series from the first book, also by this author, and was thrilled to see she is the writer for this latest novel. It can easily be read as a standalone, but those who have read earlier books will find this a wonderful new installment.
Faith is a very likable character and I was immediately drawn to her in the heartbreaking prologue. Once the story gets going, we meet a woman who has spunk and has not allowed life’s losses to make her bitter. Matthew is an intriguing man with many secrets but I loved that he is committed to something larger than himself, and that everything else has to fall into place behind that priority. He is a man of honor.
The romance between them is a beautiful one; even though their time together is somewhat limited, the bulk of the story revolves around their relationship. One of my favorite parts is when Matthew reflects how she really knows him, even though their acquaintance has been short, she understands him as very few others can and that helps him remember who he is.
The historical detail could have easily overpowered the plot, but the author does a good job of giving us a taste of the time while keeping the story central. And I appreciate that the historical circumstances are applicable to my own, present-day experiences: trust, fighting prejudice, and doing the right thing even when it costs are lessons good for any time in history.
I really enjoyed this book—the characters have heart and tenacity, the romance is sweet, and the historical detail outstanding. I highly recommend it for those who enjoy historical romance, especially if Revolutionary history is a favorite.
I received a review copy of this book from the author and publisher but was not required to write a positive review. The thoughts expressed are both honest and my own.
The Patriot Bride just may be my favorite of the Daughters of the Mayflower series! Kimberley Woodhouse gives attention to historical details of America’s independence from Britain! Faith Jackson is a wonderful socialite widow who also delivers secret messages for the Patriots. You will love Matthew Weber, a handsome spy! George Washington and Benjamin Franklin are also important characters in this fiction book! I recommend The Patriot Bride to anyone who enjoys historical fiction. Rich with historical details this page-turning story takes readers on a journey through time back to the tumultuous beginnings of our county. Neighbors and even family find themselves on conflicting sides as a new nation is created to ensure that it’s people continue to enjoy the freedoms they anticipated enjoying when they left their native homeland to carve out a living in this vast new land.
With delightfully unique characters, and an exciting plot line of espionage and mystery readers are sure to find much to enjoy in this latest addition to the Daughters of the Mayflower collection. Readers who haven’t yet enjoyed the earlier stories, will not feel lost jumping right in with The Patriot Bride. However, I’d encourage you to make time to enjoy the other stories as well, as they are equally delightful!
Faith Jackson is a feisty heroine with a sharp mind, and strong opinions. She is independent and able to take care of not only herself but of those in her circle of influence. Her efforts to further the Patriot cause lead her to volunteering to carry secret correspondence to a spy deeply entrenched in the Loyalist camp. But will she have to sacrifice more than she first thought for the sake of the Patriot cause?
Those who enjoy Colonial period stories will not want to miss out on this page-turning experience. I give this book 4.5 stars and encourage you to pick up this story to enjoy at your earliest convenience.

I thoroughly enjoyed this account of America’s turning point in history. The men and women who fought for our independence and took risks to ensure our freedom were portrayed so vividly. With each Daughters of the Mayflower book, I’ve been able to piece together how this great nation was formed and governed.
Kimberley Woodhouse has done her research and it shows! She brought both George Washington and Ben Franklin to life in my mind and gave them personalities. I could hear Paul Revere call out “The British are coming” and the fear it instilled in many of the Patriots hearts. It was a time of uncertainty in our nation where both friends and families were divided and loyalties tested. I could not imagine living in this era! It was so real to me as if a movie were playing in my mind; Woodhouse did an exceptional job of describing places, people and events happening! And no story would be complete without a little romance. Both Faith and Matthew felt an immediate attraction the first time they met while secretly passing on messages. But their budding love would be tested as war edged closer and times became more dangerous.
Historical events come to life in this well-written book set before our Independence Day 1776!

I really enjoyed the history packed into this read. George Washington and Benjamin Franklin making their appearances really helps to pull one into the scene and times of this novel.
It’s really a light read which is always enjoyable to find after reading heavy, deep, or confusing reads. The romance was present but not overdone, which I prefer in my historical Fiction reads.
I have always enjoyed this author, and this book is no exception. This book may not be one hundred percent historically accurate, but it opens the imagination…and made for a very enjoyable story. The characters are well done, the plot believable, and the book overall recommended. I’m really enjoying this series!
Received this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
He prayed that she hadn’t given upon her commitment…or on him.
Webber better keep you safe. That’s God’s job, George. You taught me that.
I think we should start memorizing more scripture, ladies. To help us through the tough times ahead and to keep our minds trained.
I believe the good Lord above has given us instructions as to how we should live. And I don’t believe being idle and waiting to be served is one of those instructions.
Seems pretty simple to me. The earth is God’s, and he is the King of Glory. Out of the mouths of children. Simple and yet true.
I was swept up by this book from the beginning and was carried all the way though to the end. Faith and Matthew’s story was a great adventure but it also showed what people were willing to sacrifice in order for this country to be independent. I like that this book shows how much this country was founded on faith and loved that the characters depended on God. I enjoyed “meeting” George and Martha Washington and Benjamin Franklin. Those characters added a lot to the story.
I have been impressed with the research the authors have done on this series and have enjoyed reading about it at the end of the book.

The Patriot Bride by Kimberley Woodhouse is fourth in the Daughters of the Mayflower series and I cannot wait for the next book to be released. The books in this series are easily read as stand-alone stories and are such a great collection of stories about the history of the United States. Woodhouse has done a great job with the history and setting enabling the readers to feel like they are right there in the middle of the scenes. The mix of fictional characters with historical figures makes the story interesting and authentic. I enjoyed seeing the fictional accounts of Ben Franklin and George Washington. The sweet romance between Faith and Matthew is engaging and delightful to watch unfold despite the difficulties they encountered with Boston being embroiled in war. Faith is an independent and feisty young widow, having tragically lost her parents at age 12 and then her husband shortly after their marriage. Matthew is a brave Patriot who works tirelessly to fight for the freedom of the colonies from the tyrannical rule of England. I really enjoyed Faith’s relationship with her servants and their loyalty to her. The author adds some humor to the story with the introduction of an egotistical and headstrong would-be suitor for Faith. The characters are vivid and lovable and their growth and maturity throughout the story is realistic. The Patriot Bride is replete with information about the history of our nation and the struggles the Patriots found themselves facing as war with England began. The author makes the story intriguing with action scenes and suspense. And with a strong thread of faith in God throughout, the book is also inspirational as the reader can see how God’s hand is at work in the lives of the individuals. As noted, I look forward to reading the next book, The Cumberland Bride.

This series just keeps getting better and better! This book is set in one of my favorite time periods. I loved that it had to do with spies. The characters were great! I found myself laughing out loud at some of the characters antics. Especially at what Benjamin Franklin does towards the end of the book. I loved reading the part of the story from George Washington’s point of view. Kimberley Woodhouse did an excellent job writing this story! I can’t wait to read the next book!

The Patriot Bride by Kimberly Woodhouse, is the fourth in Barbour Books The Daughters of the Mayflowrr series, and the second this author has written for the series.
As a lover of history, The Patriot Bride was such a fun and informative read. Faith Jackson is a young and wealthy widow, and as such has had to put off all suitors as she found they were not interested in her, but rather her wealth. Orphaned at a young age, Faith is a ward of the young George Washington, though there is little difference in their ages, perhaps ten years or so.
As an adult, she resides in. Boston and is a staunch Patriot. She, and a number of like-minded women, have formed a ladies society group in order to provide assistant in the war efforts; assistance such as sewing uniforms; knitting socks, and other similar activities.
During a meeting, a stranger appears at the home of Faith Jackson; a stranger who has a very dangerous proposition. Would the group consider becoming a transporter of secret encoded messages for the Patriots? A spy. An offense punishable by death. This person would be responsible for learning the code in such messages and passing them to the next spy down the line. As the leader of the group, and the only widow, determines that it is she who can put in such as position, as all the other women have families to care for,
Enter William Weber, spy and compatriot of none other than Benjamin Franklin. It is William Weber who is assigned as Faith’s connection. It is William that Faith begins to meet at night, in places not inhabited by people and often cold, dreary places. Meeting Faith in a dank, smelly barn, William finds her to be intelligent and trustworthy. He also finds her very attractive.
As William and Faith develop a friendship with each meeting, they find themselves lingering which is quite dangerous. Friendship begins to turn into the first butterflies of love, yet each is not 100% sure if the other is trustworthy.
One Anthony Jameson, a loyalist, is determined to marry Faith. He becomes quite the nuisance and increases the danger level for both William and Faith. Personally, I found his description to be rather creepy and he made my skin crawl. In today’s terms, he would be called a stalker.
As the danger increases, Faith continues putting her life on the line, and when Matthew mysteriously disappears, her consternation knows no boundaries.
Although the main storyline is subject to the author’s imagination, one can glean quite a bit of history and the daily lives of those in this time period. I highly recommend this book.

Well researched, author Kimberley Woodhouse does a great job of weaving together fact and fiction to make history come to life. You’ll recognize many of the characters in this story, and meet some new ones.
Learning to put God first, and to trust again, gives this a timeless draw. The descriptions of people, places, and events are intriguing and add to the plot of the story. With suspense and a light romance, this book has something for every history lover.

“Every good citizen makes his country’s honor his own, and cherishes it not only as precious but as sacred. He is willing to risk his life in its defense and is conscious that he gains protection while he gives it.” –Andrew Jackson
I missed the first book in the series; however, each book works as a stand-a-lone as we work our way through history with the descendants of the Mayflower voyage. Rating: clean, faith-based.

Our prologue [1752] introduces a precocious 10-year-old Faith Lytton. If you have read any of the other books you will recognize the name. She is friends with an older lad and neighbor by the name of George Washington. Yep, that is our George. They were fast friends and they adored and considered each other a sibling.
“There are three classes of men; lovers of wisdom, lovers of honor, and lovers of gain.” –Plato
Chapter 1 picked up in 1774 with Faith Lytton Jackson all grown up and a widow. This was her story in a changing country that was at odds with the restrictions and taxation from the home country Britain. This was during the time where history claimed that King George lll lost the thirteen colonies. It made the reader wonder if all the decisions were his alone or those of his advisors. It would be a bitter and costly loss.
Faith Lytton Jackson was friends with Ben Franklin and George Washington. These guys were so cool in this story. It was a hoot spending time with them as they interacted with Faith and Matthew. She became a contact point for the patriot spy and would exchange messages with him. Their meetings became more dangerous as the British presence became more intolerable. It also gave them page time to get to know each other.
We have our villain of course… Sir Anthony: “A politician will do anything to keep his job, even become a patriot.” –William Randolph Hearst
What a slime… this guy was the worst. He decided he needed to play both sides of the conflict and said whatever would keep him in the good graces of either group. He was the epitome of crass and reigning president of the club that refuses to hear a woman when she says ‘no.’ How many times did Faith tell him no… only for him to approach her again? He reminded me a bit of Sir Walter Elliot from Jane Austen’s Persuasion as he preened in front of his mirror. He admired himself so much. Talk about your self-love. He was simply disgusting as he listed all his admiring attributes and glorious benefits that were his to bring to their marriage. She was so lucky. He was also looking forward to her wealth being added to his depleted coffers. Yes, they were a couple destined to be together and he would see to it that she married him. He would brook no argument. He would also tolerate no competition for Faith’s attentions. Yep… the scumbag caused problems for our Faith and Matthew.
“All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope.” –Winston Churchill
Matthew Weber was a man between two worlds… loyalists and patriots. The loyalists wanted him to spy on the patriots. However, he was a patriot spy assigned to gather information from the loyalists and report back their plans and actions. His contact person … Mrs. Faith Jackson. This was so cute.
I really enjoyed this clean, faith-based story. Our characters were people of faith and would pray for their struggles, for others and their own situations. They read their Bible… so there will be scriptures throughout the story. Our H/h would discuss their belief and faith in God and discuss His abiding grace and protection in times of trouble. There were explanations of where God was during hard times… yet, none of this was in a preachy manner. It was presented as comfort between characters who had experienced loss or was in grief. I enjoyed this story and look forward to the next in the series.
At the end of the book there is a copy of the Declaration and blurbs from all the books within the series. At 96% there is a section of notes from the author that I found very interesting.
I volunteered to read an unedited galley from Barbour Publishing via Netgalley. The views expressed are my own.
The Patriot Bride (Daughters of the Mayflower) by author Kimberley Woodhouse is a wonderful Christian faith-based story of events leading into the Revolutionary War. Even as a child Faith has enjoyed the strategy of battle and winning games against her fellow playmates which earns her the admiration of her young friend George Washington. Later young widow Faith Jackson fills the call for a messenger during the tense days leading up to the war in 1775. Because of her status in the town she has the ability to attend and conduct meetings with other ladies of the community who are determined to help the cause of the Patriots. Faith meets Matthew Webber as her contact for late night clandestine meetings to exchange messages for Patriot leaders.
Faith and Matthew have agreed to a dangerous mission for freedom. Faith’s life becomes even more complicated when she draws the unwanted attention of a scheming man who is determined to control her life.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
