I loved the way Kim wove in real and accurate history with the fictional characters. She took a time period that a lot of people avoid and created a fascinating, fast-paced story.
As spirited and stirring as the era it represents. In The Patriot Bride, duty and love compete and compel, heaping tension onto every page as endearing characters navigate their changing world. This timeless tale is destined to be beloved by fans of the history and romance of the Revolutionary Era.
4.5 STARS!!!
Woodhouse brings a touching story in The Patriot Bride. I was completely enamored from the beginning. There are so many great elements in this story and Woodhouse’s incorporation of two of our country’s greatest founders is brilliant. Just imagining George Washington and Benjamin Franklin in this setting, hearing their thoughts and feelings added an incredible depth to the story for me. I adored Washington’s relationship with Faith, especially the prologue that had me chuckling and then tearing up. And Franklin’s friendship with Matthew was such a delight.
The author excels at putting readers smack dab in the middle of the fray. Every moment Faith and Matthew had to meet in secret was thrilling and dangerous. And the villain…Woodhouse wrote a certified crackpot! There is plenty of intrigue and danger, with the right amount of romance woven among this moving historical to make it a must-read. If you’re a fan of history, I think you’ll enjoy this book. And I even read the author notes in the back and learned a thing or two.
I was provided a print copy from the publisher. No review was required. No compensation has been received.
The Patriot Bride (2018) by Kimberly Woodhouse is the fourth novel in the Daughters of the Mayflower series. This book comes in all forms including eBook, and is 256 pages in length. With a full-time job and a very busy six-year old at home, this novel took me four days to read. I received a copy of this book in eBook form from the publisher, Barbour Books. In no way has this influenced my opinion of the story. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. I give The Patriot Bride 4.5 STARS. This novel is Historical Christian Fiction.
I have enjoyed the novels so far in the Daughters of the Mayflower series, so when The Patriot Bride released I knew I had to read it immediately. Boy am I glad I did. This novel is a lot of fun. The Patriot Bride has well written and relatable characters, an engaging plot line, and fascinating historical detail.
I enjoyed several aspects to this novel. The first being the inclusion of George Washington and Benjamin Franklin as actual characters in the story line. Most of the time in historical novels actual historical figures are merely mentioned one or two times over the course of the story. But in The Patriot Bride, George Washington plays a pivotal part in Faith Jackson’s life. Faith, the heroine of The Patriot Bride, grew up following George Washington around wherever he went. When her entire family dies when she is a very young girl, George becomes Faith’s caretaker. My favorite part of George’s character is how protective a brother he becomes to Faith over the years. And, Benjamin Franklin is a mentor to Matthew Weber, the hero of this story. Franklin’s character is quite hilarious in most of his scenes, as he was in real life. If you have not read The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin by Benjamin Franklin I highly recommend that you do. It is one of the funniest books I’ve ever read. In real life, Franklin was a hoot!
Kimberly Woodhouse did a FANTASTIC job of capturing the time period. Most notably in how she portrays communication, or rather the lack of communication, in the 1770s in America. I very much realized reading this book just how spoiled I am today. I can contact anyone in my contacts list via text message, phone call, and/or email, and have almost instant communication back. Even our snail mail is amazing. I can order a book from Amazon and two days later I have it in my hands. This absolutely was not the case in 1770s America. Snail mail was just called mail back then! It took as long as it took. By the time one received “news” the news was two months old already. And, if a war was going on…forget it, you probably weren’t getting anything by mail. This communication issue was just a fact of life for these people. Mrs. Woodhouse did a great job of illustrating this.
My final favorite aspect to this novel is the discussion of man’s time vs. God’s time that is weaved throughout. Matthew very much wants to be with Faith. He’s sure she is the one for him, but the timing is off. A war is brewing and he does not think it the appropriate time to marry and start a family. So he puts things off with Faith. This is so true to humans! We all try to control our steps and our paths. We think there is a perfect, right time to get married. We believe there is a perfect, right time to have babies. We humans think we are controlling time. How funny we are. As Proverbs 16:9 (ESV) states, “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” This is why marriages happen when they happen and babies come when they come. God is the boss. If God puts love in your path, it’s God’s time for you to be in love whether there is a war on or not. In his own unique way, Benjamin Franklin’s character reminds Matthew of this unalterable truth. We humans can plan all day long, but God puts us where He wants us to be!
Overall, The Patriot Bride is a read I highly recommend. The characters are endearing, the setting is so well written I felt like I was in Boston during the 1770s, the messages are timely, and the historical detail is rich. If you are looking for an engaging and thoughtful historical fiction novel to escape into, The Patriot Bride is definitely the book for you.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Kimberley Woodhouse must have done a lot of research to make her book so packed with detail. I couldn’t put the book down and ended up finishing it in 1 day. I loved the intrigue and action, and I found it really interesting how she wove in real-life Revolution figures. A fantastic, well-written installment in this series!
This is a remarkable historical romance!
I love both of the main characters. Faith is an incredibly strong woman. She has learned how to survive without a man in charge of her household because of her strength. She knows how to lead and she expects those around her to follow her instructions. She helps immensely in the difficult situations that she faces during the beginning of the war.
Matthew is everything you can ask for in a hero in a book. He is strong, handsome, and very dedicated to his beliefs and doing all that he can to support the cause. Throw in there the fact that he is always willing to protect Faith is just perfect.
The storyline is captivating. I was drawn into it and anxious to find out how things turn out for Faith and Matthew. It was a nice fictional story built into the history of the Revolutionary War. Seeing George Washington and Benjamin Franklin brought into the story and interacting with Faith and Matthew was wonderful.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the author’s note at the end of the book to see what she had to say about the use of actual historical characters in her book. It was great to read her thoughts and see a glimpse into how she views history.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. I have chosen to write this review to express my personal opinion.

This was a wonderful story!
It’s my first book from Kimberley Woodhouse and I want to read more of her books!
I love historical stories and this one was very well done. I liked that it involved real historical characters like George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, William Franklin, etc. I have no idea about the accuracy of the historical part, but it sounded adequate and well researched.
I loved how the book started as young Faith becomes orphaned after a fire at her house, and her friendship (even if he was 10 yrs older) con George Washington and how she becomes his ward even when he’s only 20 yrs old. The story continues many years later as Faith Jackson is a wealthy widow and supports the patriot cause. She promotes helping the cause within her circle of friends. But when a dangerous task of taking messages to a spy on the loyalist trench surges, she know she’s the one to take on the responsability, even if her life might be at risk… Meeting Matthew Webber, also a spy for the cause, complicates things, especially when feelings start growing and her hearts opens up to the hope of loving again. But is it possible or worth it to love in times of war? Will they make it out of every lurking danger unscathed?
The story keps your attention from the first page. The adventure, the drama and the suspense will keep you captivated. The romance is clean and sweet. And the characters feel real and relatable, full of rich qualities, but flawed at the same time. They were both corageous, strong, selfless and compassionate. And I liked how they trusted God and their faith along the way to guide them through such difficult circumstances. It was uplifting and inspiring!
I totally recommend this book to historical romance lovers. A must read! I really enjoyed it!
I received a copy of this book from Barbour Publishing via NetGalley but wasn’t required to review. This is my honest and unbiased review.
I was surprised that such well-known real-life historical figures George Washington and Benjamin Franklin were incorporated into this story, but I loved seeing them with relationships and conversations that made them seem more human rather than iconic. Faith is an intrepid character, full of bravery, strength, and conviction. I enjoyed the prologue with Faith as a ten-year-old playing war games with the neighborhood boys. It showcased her tenacity and clever intellect, and was an attention-catching beginning to a story that had a somewhat slow but steady pace. The spy activities brought a strong element of suspense and tension to the plot, and I was fascinated by the methods and strategies employed by the Patriots as they prepared for revolution. The romance between Faith and Matthew is sweet and gentle in the midst of the turmoil, and I loved their relationship. A story that will definitely be enjoyed by fans of historical fiction!

The Patriot Bride #4 Daughters of Mayflower by Kimberley Woodhouse
May 1752…. Wealthy widow Faith Jackson and Matthew Weber suddenly find themselves working together for the Patriot cause. Both are friends with important men in high places, such as George Washington and Benjamin Franklin (I enjoyed seeing George and Benjamin included in the story). I am not sure Faith understood the seriousness and potential dangers she places herself into as a spy at first but it soon becomes all too clear as conflicts heat up to ever increasingly dangerous levels. With intrigue, danger and spys it would be hard to know who to trust but there is One Who is always trustworthy. I appreciate the Biblical truths and spiritual elements in the story-line. I especially enjoy the inclusion of the Declaration of Independence and historical notes the author includes along with the family tree. This is book four in the Daughters of Mayflower series but can be read as a stand-a-lone. A captivating, gripping and heartwarming story.
~I received a copy of this book from the author/Barbour publishing (no monetary gain were exchanged), this is my honest review~
It’s the beginning of American Independence and we follow Faith Jackson and Matthew Weber as they volunteer to become spies for the Revolutionists. Matthew goes “behind enemy lines” to gain information from the Loyalists to bring back to the Patriots. Faith will code and deliver letters between Matthew and a secret source that brings them to her home. This is how Faith and Matthew’s fast growing friendship forms. They must rely and trust each other to keep from being caught because the stakes are extremely high!
One of my favorite aspects of this story is that because of the time period that it takes place two of the supporting characters are George Washington, Faith’s very dear childhood friend and later guardian, and Benjamin Franklin, Matthew’s mentor. It was such a fun aspect of the story to have those two extremely well known people from United States history play a pivotal part in this story.
I’ve read each of the four books in the Daughter’s of the Mayflower series, have enjoyed each one immensly, and The Patriot Bride is no exception. This story is full of wonderful history along with the fictional story that helps bring it to life. I am SO looking forward to the next book, The Cumberland Bride!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and received a copy from the publisher. I was not required to leave a review. All opinions are my own.
Another historical fiction book that I enjoyed very much.
I enjoyed the historical side of this book. You can tell the author did a lot of research. It is set mostly in Boston while the United States was trying to free itself from British rule. I enjoyed the cameo appearances from the Washingtons, Ben Franklin, Paul Revere, and the many women who worked behind the scenes. This particular story is about a fictional figure named Faith who helped in many ways, including passing and coding messages the the Patriots.
It wasn’t my favorite in the series because I found it to be a bit on the slow side for me.
The romance was sweet and clean. It is Christian and has some praying and scripture passages.
I received this advanced copy from Barbour Books through Net Gallery for my honest opinion and review.
Faith Lytton Jackson cannot abide a bully, whether it’s an older boy or the King of England. As a wealthy widow and former ward of George Washington, she dedicates time and effort to the Patriot cause. When leaders of the Patriots propose that a woman deliver messages to the spy placed in the Loyalist ranks, Faith volunteers for the dangerous mission. The spunk and bravery she has possessed since childhood aid her as she embarks on nighttime meetings to deliver coded messages. Upon meeting Matthew Weber, the Patriot spy within the Loyalist ranks, she is drawn to him and eagerly awaits each meeting. Attraction buds between Faith and Matthew, but as war looms, it is an inopportune time for love. Read more in The Patriot Bride by Kimberley Woodhouse.
The Patriot Bride by Kimberley Woodhouse is the fourth installment in the Daughters of the Mayflowers series. It is a stand-alone novel that can be read completely independent of the other novels.
I struggled to finish The Patriot Bride. It wasn’t for lack of action and suspense. The plot clipped along nicely and danger lurked constantly. I liked Faith. She was feisty, brave, and intensely loyal. However, there wasn’t much character development – nothing about her as a person really changed from beginning to end. The plot was more about the events that occurred around and to her – carrying messages for the Patriot cause, dealing with an unwanted suitor, daydreaming about Matthew, etc. Speaking of Faith and Matthew, I think the story would have benefited from more development of their romantic relationship as it seemed overshadowed by the pre-war hostilities, Matthew’s relationship with Benjamin Franklin, and Faith’s relationship with George Washington.
Quite possibly my favorite part of this book was on page 81. Faith discusses Psalm 136 with a group of ladies and says, “The end of each phrase is the same – like an answer to a difficult question, the answer will always be the same. His mercy endureth forever.” What a wonderful perspective on that Psalm! For every question or difficulty, His mercy endureth forever, is the answer! I would have enjoyed seeing this theme fleshed out in the story.
The Patriot Bride by Kimberley Woodhouse threads history and fiction together to create a story set on the eve of the Revolutionary War. Although, I won’t read it again, this book may appeal to history lovers as it does contain lots of history and fictionalized versions of George Washington and Benjamin Franklin.

The Patriot Bride by Kimberley Woodhouse
Spies, double-agents, traitors, intrigue, and marriage proposals
Who would have thought a feisty widow would be entrenched in such dealings!
Anthony Jameson didn’t really care which side was right or which cause was just. And he wasn’t confident about who was going to win the war. So instead of taking the risk of making the wrong choice, he decided to play both sides and come out on top either way. It wasn’t the wisest decision he ever made. Anthony made for a perfect villain and did his best to cause problems for the lovely widow, Faith.
Faith had been orphaned as a young girl and her dear friend, George, was appointed her guardian. Tragedy struck her life again when she was just a young lady and her husband of just one week was killed in battle. Despite these things, she had a close relationship with the Lord and was strong and dedicated to serving her country. She was confident and clever which served her well when faced with a persistent and unwanted suitor and enemy soldiers taking over her city.
The majority of the story revolved around Faith, which was in my opinion, wonderful! Seeing the way she and her neighbors served the Patriots, not only in making yarn and cloth but also in coding messages that could be delivered as needed. Who knew! I loved the parts of the story that were told from her point of view and the perspective they gave to how women might have felt during significant events leading to the war, especially the night of Paul Revere’s famous ride. (As a side note, I was fascinated at learning that the events of that night didn’t take place the way I had always imagined – with men on horseback loudly yelling through the streets “The British are coming!”)
Authors of novels that include “real” people have quite a challenge – that of staying true to known facts so as to not be taken to task for not knowing what they are talking about. Author Kimberley Woodhouse bravely included not just one prominent historical figure but two in The Patriot Bride. I really enjoyed the portrayals of George Washington and Benjamin Franklin in this book and seeing them in such a personal light – as mentors, guardians, and friends. It was almost strange seeing them referred to so familiarly, as George and Ben – how often do you hear them referred to in this manner?
This series follows a family who had come over on the Mayflower. Each book is designed to stand alone, though reference may be made to the original family. If you read just one or read them out of order you will not feel lost or that you have missed anything. I have loved each of them, though, so I can recommend that you read them all.

“But I know we cannot put the cause in jeopardy. I fear I have made a grave mistake.”
Raised as the ward of one the most infamous American patriots, Faith Jackson has now jeopardized her own well being for the cause of freedom. Using her innate tactical skills, she becomes a messenger, carrying important coded information to a deeply embedded Patriot spy, Matthew Weber. How could she have known that their clandestine meetings would forge a new hope within the lonely recesses of a widow’s heart? The timing couldn’t have been worse; for there was hardly time for romantic musings; war with the British was imminent.
Carved solidly between fact and fiction, “The Patriot Bride” is an endearing tale of faith, hope and love under fire.
This author has an amazing talent to send you back in time and immerse you into the history and era! As another book in the Daughters of the Mayflower series I was excited for this. Twists and turns with much danger abound in this story. It makes you keep turning the pages! You will feel right along with Faith and Matthew as they struggle with so much for their country and themselves. It tugs the heart strings! Deeply moving and fills my historical loving heart.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.
I really enjoyed reading this fourth book in the Daughters of the Mayflower series. I have previously read “The Pirate Bride” and looked forward to reading this novel by Kimberley Woodhouse. The historical content of this novel was great and the author took quite a bit of time researching the facts to include. Faith, a spunky widow and charge of George Washington, volunteered for the cause to deliver coded messages to another messenger, Matthew Webber. The romantic part of this book was sweet. It was great getting to know the characters, and I loved the inclusion of their faith. Matthew and Faith are risking their lives delivering coded messages for the Patriots to help them win the war. It was also great to read about events in Fredericksburg, Virginia, which is about ten miles from where we live. You follow their story of risk and eventual love. Great read and cannot wait to read the next book in the series. Thank you to Ms. Woodhouse, Barbour Books, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Wow! The Daughters of the Mayflower is a fabulous series. I have throughly enjoyed the first three books and look forward to the last two yet to come. If you have any interest in American history, you need to read this series of books.
The Patriot Bride takes us through the birth pangs of a new nation. Britain doesn’t want the Colonies to be independent for many reasons with tax money likely at the top of the list. The Patriots have had enough of the King and all he stands for. After all, the Mayflower and the Speedwell journeyed to America to have freedom of religion and to be free from the constraints of that nation.
Faith Jackson was a decendant of those that sought freedom, so becoming a spy for the Patriot cause was an easy decision. Join her as she does her part to bring about the Declaration of Independence.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.
The 1700s have come alive in this spirited story rich with iconic figures. How would you like to be able to say that George Washington was one of your closest friends? Faith has that distinction and I must say how very exciting it is. She is a wonderful character full of honor and grace. I loved that she wanted to do something to help her country out in time of war. I know I could say she was brave but I think I will call her a jewel in time of need. She must know of the danger that will surround her as she takes on a very secretive mission.
Matthew has also joined forces with George and his country to outsmart the British. I was a little concerned that Matthew was playing a double spy. Does he realize how dangerous that is?There are a few chuckles in the book when a man sets his eyes on Faith. Poor man, he is in for a heartbreak I think. As Faith and Matthew meet in secret to exchange information, a closeness develops between them.
The story is very intriguing and I loved reading about Benjamin Franklin and Paul Revere . I could hear Paul racing through the town screaming , ” The British are coming. The British are coming. ” What I really liked was reading the author’s notes at the end of the book. It corrected some things I didn’t know about. I now know how tall George Washington really was. Also interesting was the real words that Paul Revere said. Thank you for including information that shines a new light on the truth in history.
The author keeps readers involved in the story as she places us right in the action. Her knowledge of the era is very impressive and enhances a very historic event . Will Faith and Matthew be able to keep their feelings from causing them danger as they meet each other in turbulent times? The characters are believable and the story is gripping. The ending is a must read for everyone.
I received a copy of this book from the author and Barbour Publishing. The review is my own opinion.
What a great add to the multi-author Daughters of the Mayflower series! Kimberly Woodhouse penned this brilliant Christian novel about a woman who, since childhood, considers George Washington her best friend. The historical setting and characters are designed with care; the two main characters are fictional, with real historical characters behaving in such a way as to be true to their biographical personalities.
Faith Lytton Jackson is a descendent of a couple who met on the Mayflower; her parents were close friends of George Washington’s parents. He is ten years her senior, yet she sees him as her best friend. When she is 10, her parents die suddenly. The Washington’s were named to be her guardian in the event of their demise, but as his parents are deceased, George honors that request and assures her future in many ways. At 20, Faith marries a young man; they are totally in love, but he is killed in battle a week after they are married.
Fast forward to 1774, when Faith is 32. The rumblings of war increase as Britain to places huge taxes on the people in America and no longer allows them to purchase goods from other countries. British soldiers occupy Boston, and each colony has their respective militia. A group of ladies meets at Faith’s home who make a pact of secrecy so that no British sympathizers learn of work they do for the Patriots.
The ladies learn how to write coded messages for the Patriots. George sends a friend to speak at the women’s group, stating the need for a woman to exchange coded notes with Matthew, a man who is a spy for the Patriots in deep cover with the Loyalists (British). It may be a dangerous task, and as she is the only single, childless woman, Faith volunteers. Even as she and Matthew slowly get to know a little about each other as they meet, a man named Anthony Jameson demands to court and wed her. As a wealthy widow, he sees her as giving him access to the money and an “in” with the Patriots, should the Loyalists fail. When Matthew disappears, and Faith is placed under house arrest, they faith in the Lord they have cultivated for much of their lives leads them.
Each of the men and women, particularly Matthew, Faith, Anthony and Lavonia, an older, close friend of Faith, are brought to life through realistic dialog and action. Except for Anthony, most of the characters are very likable. I like Faith and Matthew best and the depictions of George and Martha Washington and Ben Franklin. That many of the nation’s fathers are Christian does not escape this reader; the faith of the leaders and the colonists is demonstrated throughout.
This novel can be read as a standalone. It is exciting to see this brief, explosive period of history and the effects on those in the colonies. As the Revolutionary War begins, we see how much the women do to help the cause in many ways, from nursing to opening their homes for the injured. It unfolds in a captivating, fascinating means, welcoming the reader in the earliest pages and keeping one’s attention through the end. Plot twists are in keeping with the period, challenging the perspective of those men and women of faith. One does not really know what will happen with Faith and Matthew, yet the end is very satisfactory. I highly recommend The Patriot Bride, a beautifully-written add to this series!
From a grateful heart: I received a copy of the e-arc from the publisher and NetGalley, and this is my honest review.
