“A beautiful portrait of being in Paris in the glittering 1920s—as a wife and as one’s own woman.”—Entertainment Weekly
A deeply evocative story of ambition and betrayal, The Paris Wife captures the love affair between two unforgettable people: Ernest Hemingway and his wife Hadley.
Chicago, 1920: Hadley Richardson is a quiet twenty-eight-year-old who has all but given up on love and … love and happiness—until she meets Ernest Hemingway. Following a whirlwind courtship and wedding, the pair set sail for Paris, where they become the golden couple in a lively and volatile group—the fabled “Lost Generation”—that includes Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, and F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Though deeply in love, the Hemingways are ill prepared for the hard-drinking, fast-living, and free-loving life of Jazz Age Paris. As Ernest struggles to find the voice that will earn him a place in history and pours himself into the novel that will become The Sun Also Rises, Hadley strives to hold on to her sense of self as her roles as wife, friend, and muse become more challenging. Eventually they find themselves facing the ultimate crisis of their marriage—a deception that will lead to the unraveling of everything they’ve fought so hard for.
A heartbreaking portrayal of love and torn loyalty, The Paris Wife is all the more poignant because we know that, in the end, Hemingway wrote that he would rather have died than fallen in love with anyone but Hadley.

Great read
Great book
About Hemingway’s first marriage from her view point. Very interesting.
Loved this book. Had a difficult time putting it down. I basically knew the tragic flaw of Hemingway’s character but this certainly was so beautifully portrayed from someone who loved him so very much. So many elements of the 20’s Paris arts life were captured vividly in this book. I didn’t want this book to end!
The Paris Wife was very enjoyable and an easy read. It was interesting to see how young Hem spent his early years, before his 1st marriage and how much he loved his wife. He was around so many young and upcoming artists and writers. They were all trying to figure out their lives, while trying to be unconventional and living an authentic life. …
Story of Ernest Hemingway and his wife Hadley, their unmitigated story and following tragedy.
Awesome story off Hemmingway early career and tragic love storey as well.
I really liked this book. I know it was historical fiction but it was well written and you felt like you were there with them. I especially like the book went beyond Hemmingway. I always wondered what happened to Hadley after the divorce. It was a great read and very informative about both the times and the people.
It was interesting to read about Hemingway’s first wife and their life adventures together.
I knew Hemingway was a gifted but troubled man. I know this is a book of fiction, but it seemed real re. what I knew about Hemingway and the characterization of his wife was interesting to me. The awkwardness in the developing marriage was painful at times and seemed doomed from the start. Easy to see how he difficulty balancing his marriages …
I gained insight into the characters of the era.
I just love reading The Paris Wife, Paula excellent to read.
I don’t even like Hemingway that much and I loved this book! It’s a terrific book for any book club to inspire a lot of discussion about marriage, art, family, and travel.
i thoroughly enjoyed this fictional account of Hemingway’s first wife as she and her husband began their romance and marriage, heading from the U.S. to Paris. Sad, thoughtful, and heart-breaking.
Great read with some insights.
Utterly delightful “historical fiction.” Really fun to read!
I have never been a fan of Ernest Hemingway and now I know why. I was amazed to read the history of other artists of the early 20th Century. I Googled the people mentioned in this “story” and found it to be factual.
We know he didn’t really have a happy early life but in spite of his accomplishments he never did achieve that medium.
“The …
