The second installment of Bernard Cornwell’s New York Times bestselling series chronicling the epic saga of the making of England, “like Game of Thrones, but real” (The Observer, London)—the basis for The Last Kingdom, the hit television series. As the last unvanquished piece of England, Wessex is eyed hungrily by the fearsome Viking conquerors. Uhtred, a dispossessed young nobleman, is tied to … Viking conquerors. Uhtred, a dispossessed young nobleman, is tied to the imperiled land by birth and marriage but was raised by the Danish invaders—and he questions where his allegiance must lie. But blood is his destiny, and when the overwhelming Viking horde attacks out of a wintry darkness, Uhtred must put aside all hatred and distrust and stand beside his embattled country’s staunch defender—the fugitive King Alfred.
The Pale Horseman is a gripping, monumental adventure that gives breathtaking life to one of the most important epochs in English history—yet another masterwork from New York Times bestselling author Bernard Cornwell.

This book is book three of The Last Kingdom series, but I read it first. It really caught my imagination, and I highly recommend it. Probably best to start with book one.
It was a few years after I read the first book that I recently picked up the second book. My library had the whole series on the shelf, I remembered loving The Last Kingdom, so I decided to go for it. Like Bernard Cornwell always does, he sucked me right in and I couldn’t stop. Five massive stars, as ever.
As much as I loved “The Last Kingdom,” my favorite novel in Bernard Cornwell’s “The Saxon Tales” series is “The Pale Horseman.” The book tells the incredible story of how Wessex, the last of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, was reduced to a patch of marshland in its war against the Danes. Another classic from my favorite author.
This whole series is outstanding
I loved this series!
Brings to life the beginnings of England as a country. Bernard Cornwell is up to his usual standard of excellence.
Extensive series — LOVED EVERY VOLUME.
You are taken back in time and feels like you are picking in the window of another time!
This book is the second book in a fantastic series. Cornwall is a great author!
Read the whole series. Should have lopped Alfreds head off, saved himself a lot of trouble that way.
A great Nordic/Viking genre series, easy to follow and to understand. Cannot wait for the next novel by this author.
I loved this entire series. Wonderful. When it ended, I missed Uhtred.
Love the Last Kingdom books, and Uhtred!
Not my favorite by Bernard Cornwell.
Another good addition to the series.
Good series
Part of the chronicle of Uthred, a Saxon, raised as a Dane, who became a warlord to King Alfred, the first king of England. A great series by one of the best authors of historical fiction.
The story of making England with family scale characters. A great read.
