J.R. Rain is well-known for his popular Samantha Moon series, but his true writing superpower lies in his stand alone novels. Don’t get me wrong, Samantha Moon is a great series. I like the Jim Knighthorse series even more, but this is the second time I’ve read a stand alone from him and found myself in complete and utter awe of his ability to create such unique plots with such amazing characters.
The main character of The Pale Cold Light is homeless and mentally ill, his mind broken by tragedy. A body is found and he remembers the horrible crime that led to his own downfall, to the loss of absolutely everything. Driven to find the man who robbed him of everything, he weaves in and out of insanity on his quest to track down a killer. He used to be a detective, but now he has nothing… except sheer determination and memories that float up from under the rock he buried himself under years ago, to aid him.
Written from Jim’s POV, the reader is with him as he struggles to stay afloat, to find the killer before his mind breaks again and sucks him under back to the safety of the place where he can’t remember who he is or what happened.
This book is beautifully written and will bring tears to your eyes in many places. The mystery is intriguing, and the story is both tragic and hopeful with a beautifully perfect ending. I can not recommend it enough.

This story is about an about an man that lost the on thing that meant the world to him, that is shattered him and his mind. With this man finding a dead body that reminded him of his past. He was slowly remembering his life before he lost everything and began living on the streets. He will do everything he can to remember so he can close the case and get the person that caused him to lose the one person he loved most in the world
This was a unique story to read. You slowly get to know who this man was in the past as he remembers. You will see him remember and does what he needs to get the person responsible. This books has you remembering that there is more to a person even if they are homeless, that we don’t know why or what happened to them.
I received an ARC Copy of this book and this is my honest review
