In 1903 a mysterious young woman flees alone across the West, one heart-pounding step ahead of the law. At nineteen, Mary Boulton has just become a widow—and her husband’s killer. As bloodhounds track her frantic race toward the mountains, she is tormented by mad visions and by the knowledge that her two ruthless brothers-in-law are in pursuit, determined to avenge their younger brother’s death. … death. Responding to little more than the primitive fight for life, the widow retreats ever deeper into the wilderness—and into the wilds of her own mind—encountering an unforgettable cast of eccentrics along the way.
With the stunning prose and captivating mood of great works like Charles Frazier’s Cold Mountain or early Cormac McCarthy, Gil Adamson’s intoxicating debut novel weds a brilliant literary style to the gripping tale of one woman’s desperate escape.

Predictable
A depressing read, did not enjoy
Loved the istirical background. Love the Norrthwest. Loved the characters.
Wonderful series.
I learned a lot about the past and survival..
People had to be tough! We don’t realize how much we take for granted.. The author is enlightening us in end-times survival!
Great fun, great characters and an alll around good read. Takes a bit to get into it, but stick with it.
I loved this book. It felt like it could have really happened. It has a believable strong and determine ed main female character as well as interesting and gritty characters.
Not particularly well writte and takes a long 5k,e to get anywhere.
Interesting story that keeps you interested throughout. Quick read as the action moves with good speed. Will probably lead to a followup. Surprising finish.
I hardly ever put down a book after 100 pages but this one just couldnt keep me interested.
I loved the story line and how the plot progressed, however it just fizzled out about 2/3 of the way through. After all the build up with her evil brothers in law, I expected a spectacular battle. Not so.
Hard to follow
I loved almost everything about this book! It’s well written, and the time travel idea sparks the imagination! The characters are well developed, and their adventures are exciting. The Drums of Autumn by the same authir is equally spellbinding.
This was a realistic portrayal of survival.
Great historical fiction
I could not put this down. The simple description of the present moment raised so many questions, and the author carefully parsed the backstory in digestible fragments that inspired more questions. The lead character was formidable, even when terrified; the secondary characters were interesting, eccentric, problematic – or any 2 of the 3.
And I …
I loved this book and read the entire series!
