In 1903 a mysterious young woman flees alone across the West, one heart-pounding step ahead of the law. At nineteen, Mary Boulton has just become a widow—and her husband’s killer. As bloodhounds track her frantic race toward the mountains, she is tormented by mad visions and by the knowledge that her two ruthless brothers-in-law are in pursuit, determined to avenge their younger brother’s death. … death. Responding to little more than the primitive fight for life, the widow retreats ever deeper into the wilderness—and into the wilds of her own mind—encountering an unforgettable cast of eccentrics along the way.
With the stunning prose and captivating mood of great works like Charles Frazier’s Cold Mountain or early Cormac McCarthy, Gil Adamson’s intoxicating debut novel weds a brilliant literary style to the gripping tale of one woman’s desperate escape.

Stayed interesting throughout
Too drawn out. Got bored with it. Did finish it.
I did not enjoy this book at all!
I kept reading it hoping it would get better it never did
I really did not like. I skimmed through as I found her deep descriptions sometimes boring. It is just my opinion, but to me it was a waste of time.
Great read! The whole series
I found it very entertaining
I read this nine years ago and haven’t forgotten it – what a fabulous novel of a strong woman with problems who escapes from her brothers-in-law across the Canadian plains. Gripping, true-to-life, and eye-opening for those of us who’ve seen folks struggle with mental illness – and this is escaping across the frontier! So exciting, good resolution. …
I didn’t care for this story and only read about 60 pages.
Enjoyed. Just a bit off the unusual.
Strange and haunting book. Kept me reading.
Loved this book. Would recommend it!
Good premise, but did not like the heroine.
One word – addictive!
I thought this story was well written and original. Our heroine stayed tough!
Tough characters
Tough lives
This is a very interesting book. The time period and the story development is very good. Characters and stories are revealed bit by bit with a great sense of adventure and unpredictability.
Tells the story of a woman who shoots her husband and runs away.Takes place in the old west
It was very entertaining and easy to read. Great for a weekend.
I only gave it 4 stars because, after all, she did commit murder. Still, the journey the lead character undertakes is quite out of the ordinary. So is this book.
Very interesting story and characters. Sometimes hard to believe the character could have survived some the ordeals she survived but I would still recommend the book.
