In 1903 a mysterious young woman flees alone across the West, one heart-pounding step ahead of the law. At nineteen, Mary Boulton has just become a widow—and her husband’s killer. As bloodhounds track her frantic race toward the mountains, she is tormented by mad visions and by the knowledge that her two ruthless brothers-in-law are in pursuit, determined to avenge their younger brother’s death. … death. Responding to little more than the primitive fight for life, the widow retreats ever deeper into the wilderness—and into the wilds of her own mind—encountering an unforgettable cast of eccentrics along the way.
With the stunning prose and captivating mood of great works like Charles Frazier’s Cold Mountain or early Cormac McCarthy, Gil Adamson’s intoxicating debut novel weds a brilliant literary style to the gripping tale of one woman’s desperate escape.

This was a interesting story and kept me reading. Set in 1903 around the Rocky Mountains, the author writes about the harsh weather conditions and the difficulty in traveling the land. This story is about a young widow and her travels to escape the men pursuing her after her husband dies. She survives many struggles including starvation, but …
“It was night, and dogs came through the trees, unleashed and howling.”
Much like the intriguing first line of Mike Allen’s “The Button Bin”, mentioned in an earlier post, the first line of Gil Adamson’s “The Outlander” flies out like the dogs she’s speaking of: unleashed and howling. And then the novel continues in unfaltering prose, painting …
Good and creative.
In 1903, a woman is chased across the vast Canadian frontier and into the Rockies by two men – the brothers of her husband seeking vengeance for his death at her hands. Adamson captures the soaring beauty and indifferent brutality of the wilderness, and the novel calls up both the action-adventure stories of Jack London as well as the epic journey …
a slow starter, but gets better
I remember this book long past finishing it. I could hardly put it down
The book moved kind of slowly but had a compelling story. There was actually more beauty in the words written than the story. A prose perhaps. The book was worth it just for that.
An unusual scenario, but interesting. I would like to read book two.
The story was kind of dragging. I wanted to finish it and did but did not particularly like it.
Twisted ending…not fully developed
Good read and historically accurate ! Great story
I’ve read all The Outlander books and enjoyed them and recommend them.
One of the few series of books I enjoy reading over and over again, and now I’m hooked on the television show as well.
I love this series of books. When it was first published there weren’t many “time travel” books being written. This definitely stands the test of time!
There is one other series I would highly recommend and that is the one by Sara .Donati titled “Into the Wilderness.”
Best author all time
This is an addictive series, I love Claire & Jamie. Love this tale of everlasting love.
I wanted to enjoy this – but the story itself meandered without any particular point. The writing was poetic but lacking in plot, character development and world building. Sadly, I liked the cover art so much more than the book . . .
Very intense story telling.
Not worth reading
Love the characters
