WRITTEN IN MY OWN HEART’S BLOOD
The year is 1771, and war is coming. Jamie Fraser’s wife tells him so. Little as he wishes to, he must believe it, for hers is a gift of dreadful prophecy—a time-traveler’s certain knowledge. Claire’s unique view of the future has brought him both danger and deliverance in the past. Her knowledge of the oncoming revolution is a flickering torch that may light his way through the perilous years ahead—or ignite a conflagration that will leave their lives in ashes.

These books are fabulous. Read them in order, starting with Outlander. I have read all of them twice as well as all the books about Lord John Gray. I cannot recommend them any higher. If I was stuck on a desert island, these would be the books I would choose to take with me.
Diana Gabaldon excels at historical fiction combined with time travel. This is a series that wilhookyou. Even if you have seen the Tv series, read the books. Her insight, writing and character building are exceptional. Hats off to a great writer.
Book 5 – 3 stars
First, I got the impression that each part of the book could’ve been a standalone installment but then they decided to publish them all together. Which was probably a good thing because if they had been separate books I may have moved on to another series somewhere between books two and three. But it is one book so I read all of it and the last part has me wanting to continue to find out what happens next (after a bit of a break). My favourites remain the first and third books of the series. I have the sixth and seventh ready and waiting for when I’m in the mood to tackle the task
Book 6 – 4 stars
So I think this has been my favourite installment of the Outlander saga since the first book (which is still the best). Faster paced than the more recent ones I’ve read and with a lot less political history that I needed to gloss over (I’m not au fait with American History, nor am I particularly interested, and when it comes in the form of newspaper articles or letters in old English, it’s a little bit much for me). That said, I think I only skipped about 15 pages which is not bad going considering it’s almost 1500 pages long! If you’ve got this far, this book will give you the courage and stamina to keep going
Book 7 – 3 stars
This is the 7th installment of the Outlander series. Here’s my feeling about how the series has evolved so far…
Book 1 – an adventure/romance set in the Scottish Highlands. The main focus was the characters while the historic fiction added some flavour.
Books 2 – 3 continued in this theme.
Book 4 the author seemed to spend the first part of the book trying to fit in as much historic fiction as she could around the character stories. About halfway through, it felt like the editor stepped in and told her to choose her focus (and she picked the characters).
Book 5 the author continued to suffer from indecision and it was reflected in what felt like a whole bunch of stand-alone books rolled into one.
Book 6 she rallied. And perhaps found a new editor? And we all got stuck in again (although there was still quite a lot of historic fiction and I find the American Civil War far less interesting than the Scottish conflicts).
This brings us to book 7…
For most of book 7, I’d call it more of a Historical Fiction than anything else. And for this reason, I didn’t really enjoy a large portion of it. Don’t get me wrong: it’s well written and not drawn out but I’m not American and I’m not interested (generally) in history/wars, so it’s not the kind of book I would have enjoyed anyway. I did really enjoy the parts set in the “current day”. All that said, in the last couple hundred pages things really got shaken up in the lives of the main characters (and there were some news ones introduced in book 7 while some older ones got some more attention) in ways totally unrelated to any historic wars. Now I have so many unanswered questions about what could possibly happen next and where (in time) some people are… So I guess I will be reading the next installment after all once I can get it.
Book 8 – 4 stars
We thought this was the last book of the series. Turns out we were wrong…
After mixed reviews from another member of my book club, and some mixed feelings about the more recent books in the series, I took on the daunting task of plowing through this massive tome with more than a little trepidation. And I’m happy that I did! I enjoyed it thoroughly. There were no more lengthy commentaries on the Civil War and it was largely about the people again. Admittedly, as someone else observed, the key cast seems to continuously expand, so there are a lot of stories to tell (probably why it’s so thick), but I didn’t mind that too much. I will admit I did skip over the odd Scottish ditty/poetry, but there wasn’t a lot of that.
Thick as it was, it didn’t take me long to read, and it was easy to pick up where I had left off (both in starting the book and when there were gaps in my reading time). If you have got this far in the series, then I see no reason to not take on this challenge.
The first 5 in the series were spectacular but not for readers who want a short 200 page book. So much detail & an opportunity to really ‘know’ the characters & cannot wait to what happens next. The tv series #1 should have been rated xxx which distracted from the book. The later episodes were better for following the book. If you like Scotland & time travel, these are the best.
Love the series. Have re-read the series when waiting for the next book to come out
Best book series ever!! Have been reading these since they came out in the late 1980’s cant wait for the next one.
addictive
Loved everyone
I read the entire series (including the side novellas) long before the series – totally transporting and well-written
Best series ever!
The Outlander series is my all-time favorite series!
These are great books! I have read them all!
Best series I’ve ever read. TV made it famous but the books -by far-are more EVERY THING. Gabaldon began Outlander in 90’s & we are waiting for #9!
Adventures, love interest, historical snapshots of many unusual aspects 18th century life – + the advantage of ‘seeing’ the characters in the TV people (Casting was spot on for almost all!) it has been a world wide journey. Thank you to Diane Gabaldon!!!
I love this series. I have read all ateadt twice. DG paints a true picture of the time, place, charactets. Full of nuisance you dont always catch everything on the first go ’round. Try them , but read them in order.
I love historical fiction. But this kinda put a “hitch in my get-along” when she went through the stone. I do not read anything with the slightest bit of “fantasy”, but it was recommended to me by a favorite librarian and I stuck with it. These books are the best I’ve ever read, besides Caddie Woodlawn (haha). There was nothing in particular I liked about them but EVERYTHING in general.
Epic, classic!
Additive fiction. Vocabulary building!
I liked all these books. Couldn’t put them down.
The Outlander series is the best books that I have ever read! The story between Jamie and Claire is so loving, caring of each other and family, tragic, time travel, historic and adventurous. Diana Gabaldon knows how to write a story that keeps you reading and reading.
Well written fascinating concept incorporating much history into a wide ranging saga.
