The Other Woman by Sandie Jones drew me in the blurb and kept me engaged with the story. How far would a mother go to protect her son? Or at least protect him as she thought best. I am not sure where to start, except you just have to read this.
Emily fell for Adam. She thinks he is just about perfect. Everything about him is what she wants in a man. Then she met his mother. Pammie loves her son. More than anything in the world. So much so, that will do whatever it takes to keep any woman away from her son. And so it begins!
The Other Woman was a story full of twists and turns and the unexpected! Nothing new here, but the story was engaging and I could not wait to see what would happen next!
Happy reading!
I received an ARC from NetGalley. This is quite a page-turner. The story is predictable; but the pacing makes it enjoyable and hard to put down.
Emily loves her fiance, Adam, but why is her future mother in law, Pammie, so mean to her?
Imagine for a moment that you’ve met the man of your dreams… but the first time you meet his mother, she is mean and rude and shows you a photo of a mystery woman. How would you react? Would you wonder why she was being so mean? Would you confront her? Or would you bide your time? Would you stop at nothing to find the answers? Well, this is exactly what happened in The Other Woman! Follow Emily as she battles with her mother in law, Pammie, all the way to the bitter end.
“But it’s not about placating her. It’s about standing up for me, the woman he supposedly wants to marry.” – Emily to her friend, Seb
Who will Adam choose, and why?
If you enjoyed the malicious mother in law theme, then I would highly recommend The Girlfriend (4 stars) by Michelle Frances because I enjoyed the twists and turns throughout!
I received an advance copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Heck freaking yes!
For most of this book I was rolling my eyes at the cliche way the story was unfolding. Psychological thrillers are my favorite, and this one seemed to follow suit with a few I’ve read within the last year.
The writing is very well done, though, and the plot twist had me so giddy I was literally laughing with excitement. I wish I could say I saw it coming the whole time, but I didn’t.
I would have rated this book far lower, had the last 10% gone differently, so even if you find yourself annoyed, or almost uninterested I hope you stick it out because the ending is so, so worth it.
You know when you think you have a book all figured out? You know who the hero and heroine are. You know who the enemy is. You know who you are rooting for… This book is definitely not that one. You will think it is, but in reality, it just isn’t.
I had a hard time with these characters. Their personalities, their actions. They all were just so over the top and annoying. The amount of times I was rolling my eyes, saying, REALLY?… Too many to count. There are moments where I might have liked them, then they go and ruin it within pages. Every single time.
The plot to this isn’t what you think it is. It is, but then it isn’t. I can honestly say, I didn’t see that coming, and I usually do see it coming. I mean, once it happened, it all made sense. It was nonsense, but it made sense.
If you are looking for a thriller, this isn’t the book for you. It is marked as a thriller, but it isn’t. It’s really not suspenseful either. It just it. Aside from it’s category, the book is okay. Not great but not horrible either.
Emily barely knows Adam, but she is enthralled with him, even though he is not forthcoming with information about himself or his past. As Emily puts it, “[N]o matter how hard I tried, we always ended up talking about me, even when I was the one asking the questions.” Eventually, Adam agrees to introduce her to his mother, Pammie. From the outset, theirs is a troubled relationship. Emily is convinced that Pammie abhors her because Pammie is a classic Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde — affectionate and warm when Adam is around, but a monster when his back is turned.
Emily lacks self-confidence and esteem. She clings to Adam, despite their conflicts which include manipulations and outright threats from Pammie when Emily discovers the depth of Pammie’s deceptions.
Author Sandie Jones keeps readers guessing. Is Emily paranoid and delusional? Is she imagining or exaggerating the horrid things Pammie appears to be doing to destroy Emily and Adam’s relationship?
Or is Pammie truly as diabolically devious and determined to undermine Emily’s efforts to make Adam happy as she seems?
And what about Adam’s only sibling, his brother James? Is he part of Pammie’s plan to break Emily and Adam up, or is he genuinely fond of Emily and oblivious to his mother’s machinations?
Emily is a weak, insecure protagonist. Of course, she has to be in order for the plot to hold together. A stronger woman with even a modicum of self-esteem would have left Adam, irrespective of whether or not his mother was a psychopath, instead of clinging to a man and a relationship that are anything but the ideal she doggedly wants them to be.
Savvy readers will figure out the mystery early in the story . . . but keep reading to see if they have guessed correctly. The resolution strains credulity, but no matter. The book is entertaining and an impressive debut from Martin. Throw this one in your beach bag!
Thanks to NetGalley for an Advanced Reader’s Copy of the book.
This one had me in its clutches the whole way. Right up until the ending. The storyline isn’t anything I haven’t seen before, but Jones kept it interesting. Emily is in a relationship with Adam, who appears to be a momma’s boy. Adam’s mother, Pammie, is controlling and conniving to the extreme and Emily gets the brunt of it. While I did feel for Emily’s circumstances, I didn’t care much for our heroine. Granted, Emily has never been in this type of situation, so she struggles to deal with it all, but she comes across as whiny a lot of the time. The more I read, the more I wanted to shake some sense into her and tell her to stand up for herself. That aside, the author does an excellent job with building the tension and it is a compelling read. Some things stretch the believability scale, but I kept turning those pages to see what devious thing Pammie would do next and waiting for her to get caught up in her mess. In fact, the story was riveting and I was prepared to sing its praises, until the big twist at the end. I expected part of it – a small part of it, but I have to say I was pretty disappointed with the conclusion. I love twisty stories, but this twist made little sense to me. Too many things just didn’t add up. To give details would also give spoilers, so I’ll just sum it up with this was a well-plotted and gripping story that let me down in the end.
This book is definitely a page turning psychotic thriller. I’m still wrapping my head around what I just read! It was intense in so many places I just had to keep reading to find out where it was all going. I was pulled clear in and didn’t expect the way the story went….at all. Even from the title of the book….I had expectations that I shouldn’t have. I was so pulling for Emily, the main character. She was so in love and it seemed to be challenged at every turn. I also had so much disdain for the character of Pammie. I wanted to reach into the book and yank her out. That’s a good book when the writer can bring out such strong feelings like that. I was absorbed in the story from the first word to the very last!
This is an amazing debut novel by Sandie Jones. I am anxious to read more books by her! I want to thank Netgalley for the opportunity to read this thrilling novel and thanks to Sandie Jones for writing it. I totally give this novel 5 stars plus!
What drew me to Emily’s character was that she was strong and independent. When Adam first notices her, Emily keeps informing a man who is hitting on her that he keeps getting her name wrong.
Enter Pammie – Adam’s mother. Emily begins to see that Pammie is so afraid to lose Adam’s love and attention to Emily that Pammie does everything to undermine Emily at every chance she gets. Adam doesn’t see any of it and doesn’t believe Emily at all…his mother could do no wrong.
What I don’t like about this story is that Emily doesn’t stand up for herself. Which is the exact opposite of the Emily we are introduced to in the beginning of the book. I can understand being in an abusive relationship (emotionally manipulative) where over time you begin to lose yourself. But that doesn’t happen here. Plus they were together for such are short time. Just shows you how big an a**hole Adam really is and I don’t believe Emily would have stayed with that.
HOWEVER – the ending of this book has a twist I did not expect at all and it was amazing. I actually shouted “no way!” #BewareOfPammie because she is full of unexpected surprises.
Not bad for a debut novel but lost me after the first few chapters. I didn’t feel the intense suspense that is suppose to be in this book. I received an ARC copy for an honest review.
3.5 stars
3.5 stars for The Other Woman. I finished this book a few days ago, but haven’t gotten around to writing my review. I honestly didn’t know how I wanted to rate this or what I wanted to say about it. There are things that I struggled with, but if I tell you what they are, I will give everything away. And like other reviewers mentioned, this book is best read if you know nothing about it.
So, let’s start with the fact that I ripped through this book. It is a fast, addicting read and it is a book to be devoured. I was hooked from the very beginning and knew that I wouldn’t stop until I finished. This book reminded me Michelle Francis’s The Girlfriend, only in the way that it is the same triangle (mother, son & girlfriend).
Now, I have read a lot of psychological thrillers, so I kind of had this one figured out. Not all of it, but you know the saying “something stinks in suburbia”? Well, I knew that something wasn’t jiving and I had an inkling why. And this is where the things that I struggled with happened. But in order for me to voice my issues, I will ruin the whole reading experience. So I will just leave it with the fact that things didn’t fully sit well with me. I would be more than happy to discuss this in a private chat if you are so inclined.
All of this is why I waffled so much on my rating. I read this book so fast and the writing was so good. I was hooked and I really enjoyed it. I highly recommend it to all psychological thriller fans. Ultimately, I decided 3.5 stars was just about right due to that I had some issues with the book and had started to figure it out.
I highly recommend putting this on your reading list. This book is going to be a hit.
After reading an excerpt of The Other Woman, I was excited to read the ARC I received. As a debut novel, Sandie Jones entices the readers to learn more about Adam and Emily. Then there is Emily’s future mother-in-law who the reader wants to hate. There is also James, Adam’s younger brother who seems interested in Emily. Sandie Jones sets up characters with all the right ingredients to get the reader asking, “What is going to happen?” In my opinion, the story falls apart. I lost interest as Emily just seemed stuck in the same predicament over and over. Then, everything is somewhat resolved in a few pages. What started as a “brewing tempest in a teapot,” ended very flat and making this reader wonder why she kept reading.
I keep waffling between 4 and 5 stars so I’m giving 4.5. This was such a fantastic read. After reading the blurb I knew I had to read this book. The story is so well thought out and well written. And TOTALLY creepy. I enjoyed every moment reading this story. I’m not giving it away here….. Except that there are so many warning signs for the main character that she should just go into hiding. I cringed when she made the wrong decisions. I just kept screaming (in my head) please please please run away! This is perfect for fans of thrillers, psychological thrillers especially. The creep factor and the not knowing made this book a great read and one of my favorites of 2018!
received an advanced copy
An avid fan of psychological thrillers, The Other Woman, definitely had me on the edge of my seat. In the beginning, I made the mistake of guessing who the other woman was. As I read on, that woman, she reminded me so much of someone I knew, I just couldn’t not stop having the same feelings as Emily. How dare she?!?! How dare he!?!? HOW DARE THEY!?!? The ending was terribly unexpected, but as I let out a sigh of relief, as The Other Woman, was indeed, not who I thought she was. What a sad tragedy of it all. I give this book 5 stars, as I thoroughly enjoyed the dynamics of the mother and soon to be daughter in law. Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for this free copy of The Other Woman by Sandie Jones in exchange for my honest review. Looking forward to more this author.
While doing a little unwinding at a local pub, Emily bumps into a handsome stranger named Adam, and after a few witty exchanges she finds herself a little smitten, so they exchange numbers and then go their separate ways. She has her doubts that he will call, mainly because he seemed to be way out of her league, but within a day or two he surprises her and calls to set up a date. Shortly there after the pair find themselves quickly falling in love and spending every spare minute they have together, doing all the fun things new couples do. One of those things being, meeting their mate’s families and friends, and while most of those introductions go well, there is one visit that doesn’t… meeting Adam’s mother. Emily immediately detects her condescending tone, also the way she examines her every move with a scowl on her face and she gets the feeling that his mother does not approve of his choice. Adam of course is oblivious to all of it, and tells her it will all be fine… but Emily is certain it won’t be!
As soon as I cracked the cover on this one I knew I had a long night ahead of me, barely a chapter into it and the words took a hold of me, and didn’t want to let go… it was downright riveting!! This was an impressive first read, the story line was absorbing, the characters were exquisitely crafted and easy to connect to, and the ending rocked me to my core!! I highly recommend you get your hands on this one on release day, it’s a thriller tale that packs a serious punch!!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this title.
This was an awesome debut novel by Sandie Jones! Although the beginning had kind of a slow start, the action sped up quickly and I was drawn into the story of Emily and her relationship (or lack thereof) with Pammie, her soon-top-be mother-in-law. Pammie is an astounding character with so many flaws and machinations that one wonders if she just sits in her living room and plots against Emily. She was my favorite character because I never knew what to expect from her next. I will always remember the conclusion of the book because it was such a surprise, so twisted and oh, so good! Readers of psychological suspense will certainly enjoy this dark tale of a young woman’s survival in spite of all odds. Highly recommend this great book!

Wow just wow is my initial response to this book. This story kept me reading and finished it in less than a day. Emily had been cheated on by her previous long term boyfriend and is gun shy about getting into another relationship. Emily meets Adam in a bar at a hotel during a break at meeting for her job. They hit it off and start dating. Over the next few months they find that they really like each other and have a lot in common. Soon it is time for Emily to meet Adam’s mom Pammie. Pammie is that mother that dotes on her boy and treats Emily like no matter what she does she will never be good enough. She repeatedly tries to sabotage Adam and Emily’s relationship but she does it very under handedly. Emily tries to talk to Adam about his Mom but he just doesn’t see the problem.
I loved this author’s writing style and was quite impressed that this is her first book. The twists she managed with her writing kept me reading. I will say this book did not end at all like I expected. If you enjoy reading a little suspense this book is for you. I recommend it! Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with this ARC in exchange for honest review.
wow they weren’t kidding when it was advertised that the end will be one you didn’t see coming.
I stayed up all night to finish this one, man I hated Pammie, then started to hate her son, Adam. I loved the twist and turns and the constant drama all the way through, major page turner. Emily come on though, she was so blind. How could she be so blind? Keep going on and on with all the turmoil.
This is a great book by Sandie Jones and I can’t believe it’s her first. Please more Ms. Jones. You had me up all night with this one. Find out how far Pammie will go to keep her son from being with Emily. You will not be disappointed, appalled oh yes. I kept thinking leave this man isn’t worth all that.
I highly recommend this book for 2018.
Thank you St. Martin’s Press and Minotaur Books. This book showed up in my mailbox, not quite sure where it came from so I want to thank both these publishers and of course the Author.
