I love Madeline L’Engle! Her books are futuristic and engaging! This book was no exception! A good read! Enjoy!
Fascinating view into another era. Filled with original quirky characters and set in a secret world rarely seen in fiction.
Thought provoking as always. I love Madeline L’Engles writings!
Kept me wondering what would happen. Unusual read for me but worth it.
A little dragged out and eventually went no where
Loved the characters and the plot twists!
My favorite of Ms. L’Engle’s books now that I’m a grown-up. She creates such a sense of place on the page you feel you’re there with the characters, living the story with them. It’s about a new bride coming to her husband’s family home in the south to wait for him and meeting the whole cast of characters in and around the family and learns people are good and bad. If I say more I’ll spoil it, but this is a world I fall into every time and it is so hard to leave.
A good read. I met Madeline L. at O.S.U. a good while ago. A lovely, inspiring woman.
Well researched and insightful. Read more like a novel than nonfiction.
The author has never written an “average” book. I loved it.
This book has a dark and disturbing theme. It took place more than 100 years ago and in some areas of this country their attitude has not changed. Very disconcerting to me.
One of my favorite authors – given the number of books she has written, I have yet to find one that isn’t original and good.
Got half way through this book…….it was too discriptive and boring. Did not finish it.
Disappointing story and development of plot. Hard to keep up with all the identical family names. Expected better.
The novel takes place in a time just after the Civil War. I read it in May 2017. It was written in 1971. The 1960’s get all the credit for change, but a lot was going on in the 70’s. This reminds me very much of the turmoil of the 60’s, and makes me see the current turmoil in the same vein. It was thought provoking, and not at all what I expected. I had no idea Madeline L’Engle was considered a Christian writer. But if you are Fundamentalist, you won’t like this book. It’s thought provoking. It’s a “love” story, but not in the sense of romantic love.
I loved this book. Tell about families and what happens after the civil war. A young man sends his young wife to stay with is eccentric family in the south. She finds the south very confusing since she is from England and has never seen a black person
Not L’Engle’s usual style, but engaging.
