Holy slow burn with a twist! Mary Kubica does it again with The Other Mrs.!
Song/s the book brought to mind: Honestly by Gabbie Hanna
I don’t know why it has been my theme lately, but I’ve been reading a lot of slow burns and this includes The Other Mrs. When I was reading it I found that I wasn’t as much in the mood for another slow burn, but I decided to switch to audio thanks to a friend and I am so glad I did! Once I started the audio I found that I was much more into it and I’m sure this is in part thanks to the main narrator, Piper Goodeve. She made for a fantastic narrator and made a so-so book for me into something much more interesting.
As far as characters go, Sadie was such a frustrating character for me and there was more than one time I was yelling at my book. I wasn’t a huge fan of her overall, but in the end I was rather endeared to her because of certain things that happen. Part of the reveal I saw coming because I’ve read another book with a similar plot, but there was also a major twist that I did not see coming at all.
Mary Kubica is one of my favorite authors as well as an auto-buy for me, and while The Other Mrs. was a slow start I ended up enjoying it overall. You’ll have to suspend a little bit of disbelief for this book but trust me, it’s worth it!
Thank you to the publisher for my advance review copy via NetGalley. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
In The Other Mrs., Mary Kubica weaves a labyrinth of deception and family secrets, each one more shocking than the last, with an ending that left me thunderstruck. If you have any doubts Mary Kubica is a master of the genre, this book will change your mind.
The Other Mrs. is Mary Kubica’s best book yet — which is saying a lot! I tore through the twisty, spine-tinglingly creepy pages.
Brilliantly propulsive and engrossing, with characters you’ll really care about and twists you won’t see coming, The Other Mrs. is that rare thing: a thriller with heart.
“The Other Mrs.” By Mary Kubica is a traumatic story told from several points of view, alternating between characters. Kubica introduces readers to a diverse and complex cast of characters. Each chapter identifies the speaker, and each voice is unique, persuasive, and increasingly frightening. Life on a small island near Portland, Maine should be challenging, and yet uncomplicated and satisfying; it turns out to be something very different indeed.
Sadie Foust, her husband Will, children Tate and Otto, and family dogs, move into the home of Will’s sister after her death. Readers get to know Sadie well as she shares everything through her first person narrative. She clearly has problems with family, job, children, and life in general. She documents everything but refuses to take responsibility for events or the resulting adverse consequences. In fact, she frequently denies any actual participation on her part.
Camille speaks directly to readers, commenting that she is not going to tell everything; just what she thinks is pertinent. She describes her relationship with former roommate Sadie and especially with Sadie’s husband Will. Will was hers first, before he was Sadie’s. She watched him, followed him, and vowed never to let him go.
Then, there was a girl named Mouse; not her real name, of course, but her father called her that. She loved to draw and to makeup stories. Mouse loved her father and loved her life until “Fake Mom” arrived; then she did not.
Kubica takes readers down paths of misinformation, misdirection, mania, and murder. The chain of events is complicated and complex; clues point in every direction. Blood on a washcloth, a missing cell phone, and a knife are frightening in their own right, but the most frightening thing is that when the ferry leaves the island for the night, everyone stays on the island; the killer spends the night on the island as well.
“The Other Mrs.” Is chilling with unforeseen twists and turns, all leading to a shocking and unexpected end. I was given a review copy of “The Other Mrs.” By Mary Kubica, Harlequin Trade Publishing, and Park Row. I kept anxiously turning pages right up to that unanticipated end. It was compelling and unpredictable
Absolutely fabulous! I have read all of Mary Kubica’s books, but this one is by far my favorite. The characters are amazing, and the story is perfect – creepy, suspenseful, and extremely twisty. I’m usually pretty good at figuring out the plot twists of a book, and I did figure out one or two of them, but the others – wow. I didn’t see them coming at all. I already can’t wait for her next book to come out, so I can scoop it up.
The book begins with Will’s sister having had recently committed suicide, leaving behind her 16 year old daughter, Imogen. Will and Sadie decide moving to Maine instead of having Imogen come to Chicago would be best because they are trying to forget some horrible things that had recently happened, including Will having an affair and a bullying incident that had escalated at Otto’s school.
And that is just the beginning of a whirlwind of craziness that happens to and around their family. This book is a non-stop drama fest filled with mystery and so many questions that need answering. The Other Mrs. had me staying up late reading and turning the pages as fast as I could.
Most of the story is told between three viewpoints; Sadie, Camille, and Mouse, with Will’s voice a bit at the end. I thought that Camille was stalking Sadie, but very quickly you realize that there is something else going on. Sadie keeps having blackouts and her children are quickly coming to hate her because of things that she’s done, but refuses to admit to doing. Then you also have Imogen, who does not get along with Sadie. Is it just typical teenage feelings and anger for losing her mother, or is it something more?
Sadie starts doing some investigating of her own since a neighbor said he saw her arguing with Morgan shortly before her death. Sadie’s uncovering of information starts to make her wonder if she’s paranoid or going crazy. Throw in some distrust for her from her coworkers and others who live in the town, and you have even more pressure for Sadie to find out who killed Morgan.
The way Mary Kubica has Sadie questioning if she has a stalker, is being paranoid, is actually the killer, or is being gaslite is done masterfully. I did have a small issue towards the end with the police not holding her longer once they had an idea of what was going on with Sadie. But if she had been held, then the end of the book couldn’t have ended the way it did.
I highly recommend The Other Mrs. and could easily see this being turned into a movie since it’s so good!
(4.5/5) What a super, spine-chilling, creepy psychological thriller! The switching of characters was well done and kept me guessing to the very end. And the twist at the end was amazing. Very well done! I highly recommend this page-turner of a book. You will not be able to put this one down.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the review copy.
Predictable, no one to like.
When Sadie and Will move to a small town in Maine, they hope it will heal their family which has been subject to scandal and betrayal. However, things go badly from the start. Imogen, their 16-year-old ward is moody, secretive and threatening. Sadie does not get along with her new co-workers, and oh yeah, their neighbour is brutally murdered.
After accusations are thrown at Sadie, she starts on a dangerous mission to prove her innocence. She soon discovers that everyone habors secrets and she may even be living with a killer.
It’s a taut mystery, that even after I was sure I knew who the villain was, still surprised me.
Overall I enjoyed this book. It was slow moving at the beginning. Sadie and Will and their two sons move to an isolated Maine Island. Will’s sister has died and they have guardianship of her daughter and have inherited the house. When a neighbor is murdered everyone on the island is a suspect. I was able to pick up on many of the clues so the ending was not a complete surprise. The ending redeemed the beginning of the book for me. I really liked the ending. Enjoy this suspenseful story
I wasn’t a fan of the narrator in the audio version but the story was amazing. I may go back and read it so I can have that experience of it!
Wow! You might think you know where this story is going, but I bet you don’t! What a great read! I was on the edge of my seat for most of this book! Wow!
If you love psychological thrillers, add this one to your TBR list. Told from the viewpoint of several characters, THE OTHER MRS will keep you guessing until the end. Although I did have part of the story figured out midway through the book, there was an extra Gotcha! waiting for me. My only criticism is that the extra Gotcha seemed rather unbelievable. But it won’t spoil all the dark twisty fun
Enjoyed this book.
Psychological thriller with strong characters. Loved the setting, too, which added to the mastery. Classic Kubica.
Plot Twist! I came across this book on a booklist of twisted plots so I knew there would be one, however, I did not expect it to be what it was. I kept trying to guess as I read, but I could not believe the ending! I thought it was really excellent character building and definitely kept me engaged. If you are looking for an edge of your seat book, this is a great one to pick up!
This was not what I was expecting. I’ve been reading a number of domestic thriller books lately. I was expecting this to be more like the ones I have read. I found out part of what was going on fairly early into The Other Mrs.. This had me very curious where the author was going. So I was reading late and turning pages every chance I had. The later twists did surprise me as my mind wasn’t going in that direction. I found it fascinating and scary at the same time.
The story kept me entertained. Some characters tore out my heart. I’ll be thinking about them for awhile. Some things were unbelievable but I wasn’t bothered by that. I was looking for a fictional thriller to keep me reading and this book did just that. I have a few other books by this author on my TBR. It looks like they need to be moved up.
I love it when I think I have everything figured out and the author throws a curve ball. This book kept me guessing right up until the end.I cheered, I cried, I was shocked. This book definitely puts your emotions through the wringer. This one’s a keeper.
I loved this book. It was one that kept me feeling edgy while reading it, yet not able to determine why. Even when I thought I knew what was going on, I wasn’t completely certain. And it had an unexpected twist at the end. Excellent, well worth reading.
