#1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn continues her Bridgerton prequel series with a new novel following the adventures–and love stories–of the Bridgerton and Rokesby families.
She was in the wrong place…
Fiercely independent and adventurous, Poppy Bridgerton will only wed a suitor whose keen intellect and interests match her own. Sadly, none of the fools from her London season … intellect and interests match her own. Sadly, none of the fools from her London season qualify. While visiting a friend on the Dorset coast, Poppy is pleasantly surprised to discover a smugglers’ hideaway tucked inside a cave. But her delight turns to dismay when two pirates kidnap her and take her aboard a ship, leaving her bound and gagged on the captain’s bed…
He found her at the wrong time…
Known to society as a rascal and reckless privateer, Captain Andrew James Rokesby actually transports essential goods and documents for the British government. Setting sail on a time-sensitive voyage to Portugal, he’s stunned to find a woman waiting for him in his cabin. Surely, his imagination is getting the better of him. But no, she is very real—and his duty to the Crown means he’s stuck with her.
Can two wrongs make the most perfect right?
When Andrew learns that she is a Bridgerton, he knows he will likely have to wed her to avert a scandal—though Poppy has no idea that he is the son of an earl and neighbor to her aristocratic cousins in Kent. On the high seas, their war of words soon gives way to an intoxicating passion. But when Andrew’s secret is revealed, will his declaration of love be enough to capture her heart…?

I’m a sucker for Julia Quinn’s novels. The set up on this one is a kidnapping by a probable pirate. I was worried that I wouldn’t dig it because of the pirate and kidnapping (I usually don’t dig plots that involve kidnappings), but … it’s Julia Quinn, so of course I dug it! I’d read or listened to the other books in this series and this one did not disappoint.
Julia Quinn is a great author
One more in a series of books that can be read alone or together getting to know the “families.” It’s formulaic and very predictable, but it’s a great escape book.
Loved this story, which predates the Bridgerton Series. The story of how Poppy and Andrew met and fell in love is so much fun. I was happy to see a quick reference to the upcoming birth of Benedict.
It took forever to get down to business I like Julia Quinn but much of her dialogue is badinage. I’d like to have met this couple when they were not trying to score points on each other!
Loved it and have never read a bad book by Quinn.
Julia Quinn is one of my favourite authors
So easy to read. A nice story filled with humor in the bantering between the two main characters–Poppy and Andrew.
I haven’t read a Julia Quinn book in awhile. I picked this one up from my local library and took it on a trip. I’ve read some of the Bridgerton books but not all of them. Books that take place on the sea are not usually my favorite but I enjoyed this one.
Poppy Bridgerton is a curious sort and stumbles upon a cave where the mysterious Captain Andrew James stores his super secret stuff while at sea. Captain James’ men find Poppy in the cave and take her aboard the ship where Captain James is forced to keep her (READ: kidnap) so she doesn’t expose the secret cave. During the voyage from England to Portugal, Poppy and Andrew become close as all their secrets are revealed.
Once you get past the fact that Andrew kidnaps Poppy, the dialogue and plot development are entertaining. There is a lot of chemistry between Poppy and Andrew.
Overall, I enjoyed The Other Miss Bridgerton enough. But, just enough. While I found Poppy and Andrew enjoyable characters who entertained me with great banter…the in-between did not always hold my attention.
I appreciate that Quinn was trying to give them time to learn each other and fall in love in a more genuine and organic way. It just did not flow for me always and I kept setting the book down.
Also, I would have loved to see that same attention to time delivered at the end of the book, I felt something was missing there.
Dialogue between the H and h had me giggling. Made me want to re-visit other books in the series!
It is a prequel to other books and characters wrote by Julia Quinn. I enjoyed reading this book!
I love this writer, but this was my least favorite book by her. Julia is known for her witty dialogue and romantic comedies with big hearts set in “historical” times. This one fell short for me, but I’m sure many readers will love it.
I’ve been on a bit of an Historical Romance kick lately, Julia Quinn in particular. The grandeur and restrictions of different time periods make for interesting situations and problems that we wouldn’t necessarily see in a present-day romance.
The Other Miss Bridgerton has a completely different feel than most of the other Julia Quinn books that I’ve read. Like all other of her books, there is a ton of whit and romance, tortured males and strong females, however, I simply had more fun reading this particular story. I cannot put a finger on why, but there was a lightness here that I am unaccustomed to. Maybe because the story largely takes place on a ship or otherwise away from the London ‘ton’, there were less strictures on the relationships, there was a freedom that other historical romance books often lack.
This book had it all, action and adventure, romance and ravishment. It was an excellent addition to an already amazing series.
Julia Quinn always gives great stories. Loved the Bridgerton family stories.
“The Other Miss Bridgerton” (A Bridgertons Prequel) by Julia Quinn
narrator: Rosalyn Landor
downloaded audiobook from NH State Library
Loved the story, what a fun way to spend 10+ hours and worth the couple of months wait in the queue for my turn to read this story from my state library.
Poppy gets herself abducted, and has herself quite the adventure…
Julia Quinn and Rosalyn Landor lived up to my expectations once again.
Poppy Bridgerton, one of the cousins, is kidnaped by the crew of the Integrity who is ready to sail to Portugal. The ship’s captain is Andrew Rokesby who’ve we met in an earlier book. He’s a secret government courier who is known as Captain Andrew James.
It’s a quick read, and honestly, a bit of a disappointment for a Julia Quinn book. Most of the action takes place in the ship’s cabin between two self-professed intellectuals. I usually love Ms. Quinn’s banter, but here it often felt forced. There was no real build-up in the romance between the characters – mostly a lot of arguing that wasn’t fun. Then they get to Portugal and everything happens double-speed without any real explanations, and the book ends. From another author, I might give this a higher rating, but I expect more from Julia Quinn.
I’m excited about the Netflix series for the Bridgertons and it’s possible she was distracted by it, but most of this plot (what there was of it) just didn’t make sense. Hopefully, the next book will be better.
It’s an exhilarating read found amongst the pages of this historical romance that sweeps readers into a warm embrace with its sweet and sensual connection as two people longing for more find it in each other’s arms. Just as they catch a glimpse of HEA though, the danger of his job pulls them apart and leaves readers on edge as the story races to its cheer-worthy conclusion.
Poppy Bridgerton isn’t your average heroine. From the moment she was born she longed to be more, longed to learn more and soak up every answer to every question. Being a woman makes it hard to gain that freedom she’s longed for though, keeps her from all the answers to love and life, and in this story it has her tied up and kidnapped by a pirate living a life she’s only read about. While many heroines might be reduced to tears, Poppy soaks up every facet of the journey and shows herself to be strong-willed. She wanted to live a life of excitement…and oh my goodness is this journey full of living! She discovers more about the world in that small cabin she’s being held in, learns more about matters of the heart from a pirate who’s not all that he seems, and it made for an empowering and endearing journey. Poppy’s a breath of fresh air, always thinking and quick to take a chance when given one. Every new experience brought out joy in her and put a smile on my face. Her attraction to Andrew came upon her slowly, brought out a playful side at first before the sexual tension kicked in in a relationship that captivated me yet frustrated me too for how long they danced around their attraction before giving in. On a whole Poppy became an unforgettable heroine, protective of others and willing to fight for her HEA in a story that had me cheering her on every step of the way.
Andrew James has always felt restless. Even as a boy he longed for something beyond what could be found within his own backyard. He went from being a soldier traveling the world to wage war, to recovering from an injury that changed the course of his life, to becoming an even more vital piece of the war through his ability to charm. It’s a talent that has him living a life of lies, lies towards both himself and his family. What was once exciting now feels like a burden and it’s keeping him from the HEA he sees the more time he spends with Poppy. He sees her as nothing but trouble the moment they meet, but as the days pass he finds himself opening up to her like no one else. She challenges him, she gives as good as she gets in their verbal battle that felt more like foreplay. Being around her reminded him of what it means to be a gentleman, both the good where he does whatever he needs to to protect her and the bad where he’s left fighting an attraction he’d much rather give in to. This fight within himself made him immensely likable and easy to relate to though. On a whole he was a drool-worthy hero who embraced the pirate facade but remained a good man which made his interactions with Poppy all the more heartwarming.
From the first page to the last this was an exhilarating thrill ride, the journey of a lifetime for two souls longing for more. It’s a journey full of heart and soul, a slow-burn romance that kept me wholeheartedly invested because of its witty banter and crackling connection between an immensely appealing main couple. Romance with a bit of suspense is perfectly balanced in a story that’s a delightful addition to the Bridgerton family saga, who make a rowdy appearance towards the end, to wrap this up with a bow and has me counting down the days until we revisit this likable family.
Alway like Julia Quin for her feel good stories
Julia Quinn did it again! A delightful story, and I absolutely adored Poppy and Andrew.
