I am on a Henry VIII kick and have read several books on the era and I think she is one of the best.
Good historical fiction
This was one of the first books I read by Philippa Gregory — and out of order. How could I do that to myself… but in the end, you can read them out of order assuming you know the entire list of monarchs in order. 🙂 Informative book. If you’re a history buff, it will line up well — and give you some things to dispute!
well done by a seasoned author of historical dramas. I have read many of her books and enjoyed them all.
I believe that although it is a novel it is jam backed with history.
It’s the court of Henry VIII, King of England, in 1521. And this king is a good-looking one, a handsome, tall, 30-year-old man married to his queen Catherine, the former Spanish princess. Catherine, 36, gave Henry only one daughter who survived, most of her other pregnancies ended in abortion, and a frail son born to them died a few months later. …
Even being fairly familiar with the Tudor Court, I found plenty of surprises in this novel. This novel drew me into an entire world built by Phillipa Gregory, and resulted in my reading at least 7 more of her novels. I love how she seamlessly binds fact and fiction to bring the reader the best possible story.
Well written, psychologically credible and well research.
I have yet to read a novel by Philippa Gregory that isn’t captivating. The attention to historical detail in her novels is exquisite, and her characters come to life on the page. Even if you’re familiar with the history, Gregory captures the essence of the characters, and you’ll feel like you’re there with them. More, please!
I learned things about Anne Boleyn that I had not known prior reading this novel. Excellent researcher
Different story of Ann. Love or hate her she lived a full life.
Have read all of Gregory’s Tudor novels. Love historical fiction that is long on history with just enough fiction to make an enjoyable read. While Gregory sticks mostly to facts, she can be inventive at times to enhance the story but at the expense of accuracy.
This an easy read and I enjoyed the story. This is a good book but I think the subject matter was of most interest to everyone who made this a bestseller. I’ve read better from the author. If you like the genre, you will love this book.
I am fascinated with the Tudors.
As a fan of all things Tudor I had to add this book to my current library. I found that this story both entertaining and informative.
One of my book club’s favorite books!
I love this time period. Great read.
Great read.
Another view of the Henry VIII litany of women and wives.
Another great historical British novel by this author.
