All of the possible bad girl vs Mary Sue tropes shoved into one book. It pits women against each other and diminishes them, despite the author claiming to be an empowering feminist who writes about forgotten women. Also, all of the possible Anne Boleyn myths, false rumors, and tropes are shoved into this book. It’s terribly historically inaccurate …
Loved learning about the English royals thru this historical fiction book. Because of the intrigue of Gregory’s writing I have delved into the actual history and find she is well researched.
Good book to read if not accurate about May Boleyn. She spent time in France and was sent home for being too promiscuous.
Like some of her other books, I find that she’s a Catherine loyalists. Also, while it appears to be written in Mary’s voice, we know so little about Mary Boleyn that it leads me to wonder about research.
Have read all of Gregory’s books in order. Fascinating reads, loved them.
It took a really long time for me to get into this book, I guess because I never really liked or bonded with the main character. She isn’t really a likeable person, neither is her family. The entire first half, I just wanted Anne to be queen so that we could move on from her stalking the king. Then once she was queen, I found that I was more …
Phillipa has a way of bringing these long dead characters to life again! Have read a number of her books and im always entertained.
Anne received all the attention. Mary was her obedient sister. When Henry wanted he got! Both sisters were his playthings. Both women did well at court. As long as the gave the King what he wanted! Mary becomes a …
Very interrsting and informative book for history lovers. None of your categories are appropriate for the context of the book. It appears no one on your staff has read it.
If you’re the least bit interested in the times of the earl Tudors, you might enjoy this tome. An fan of Allison Weir, will probably enjoy Phillapa’s writing, as well. I really enjoyed this one!
While many know of and about Anne Boleyn, her sister Mary is not so well known, nor the relationship between Mary and King Henry VIII. Interesting the family dynamics & motivations, the relationships between the sisters and the king and the workings of the royal court. Entertaining.
Well written, keeps your interest.
While I absolutely enjoyed the setting of the story–I love all things Tudor–I felt there were just an awful lot of liberties taken with the characters and there was just a little too much sex and flesh, as it were. But I did appreciate the world building and the historical details that were included.
Repetitious, too much like other books of same subject. Do not recommend if you read a lot of English history. f
I read this book years ago when it first came out. It restored my joy in reading historical fiction. I had forgotten how much I liked historical fiction.. I literally could not put it down. I have subsequently read each Phillipa Gregory book as they were released. I highly recommend it.
A good summer beach read
Anne Boleyn’s sister Mary was older and went to France with her as both were attendants to the sister of Henry VIII who married the French king. When they returned to England years later, Henry was entranced by Mary, and her father forced her into the king’s bed. When she was pregnant, Henry found her a husband but continued to keep her as his …
Wonderfully written. Entertaining and informative
history comes to life! Great story telling!
I loved this book. It was both informative and an easy read. Of course, the characters were wonderful and I just couldn’t put the book down.
Good historical read
