“Secrets, lies, treachery, and passion…. I read this novel in a headlong rush.” —Christina Baker Kline, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Orphan Train
A powerful novel of friendship set in a traveling circus during World War II, The Orphan’s Tale introduces two extraordinary women and their harrowing stories of sacrifice and survival.
Sixteen-year-old Noa has been cast out in disgrace after becoming pregnant by a Nazi soldier and being forced to give up her baby. She lives above a small rail station, which she cleans in order to earn her keep… When Noa discovers a boxcar containing dozens of Jewish infants bound for a concentration camp, she is reminded of the child that was taken from her. And in a moment that will change the course of her life, she snatches one of the babies and flees into the snowy night.
Noa finds refuge with a German circus, but she must learn the flying trapeze act so she can blend in undetected, spurning the resentment of the lead aerialist, Astrid. At first rivals, Noa and Astrid soon forge a powerful bond. But as the facade that protects them proves increasingly tenuous, Noa and Astrid must decide whether their friendship is enough to save one another—or if the secrets that burn between them will destroy everything.

Loved it!
One of the best books I have read in a long time. I hope there are more out there by this author.A powerful read
A young woman steals a baby from a box car on the way to be murdered in a concentration camp. She finds protection and help with a circus and becomes close to another woman, an aerialist. The growth of their friendship and fates in Nazi Germany create a unique world that tries to withstand the Nazi onslaught.
Very good book. Wonderful writing.
An easy read filled with information about the circus in WWII Germany.
Well written story that holds your interest.
Enjoyed. Great author. Characters interesting.
Engaging story!
Excellent entertaining reading. Good characters – good story.
Skimmed through story. Didn’t find the characters interesting and the ending was so predictable.
Good book, historical.
Great Book would recommend to anyone who likes to read WW 2 novels so much sorrow but at the same time there were so many hero’s. The author captured it all great job.
The back drop of a small circus trying to survive that terrible period in our history put a new face on heroes and survivors…….a picture of “family” in a new landscape, with all the human jealousies and loyalties that hold them together through uncertain times….
Fabulous reading!
Great read. Loved it.
The narrator can’t pronounce German. The author doesn’t know that babies are born with their eyes closed. I abandoned the book.
Great book. Just when you thought it would go one way, it went another. Surprise ending, then I had to go back and read the first chapter again to answer some questions.
We should all appreciate what trials children experienced trying to find a family
Very well written. Keeps you wanting to know what happens.
Not what I anticipated.
