“Secrets, lies, treachery, and passion…. I read this novel in a headlong rush.” —Christina Baker Kline, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Orphan Train
A powerful novel of friendship set in a traveling circus during World War II, The Orphan’s Tale introduces two extraordinary women and their harrowing stories of sacrifice and survival.
Sixteen-year-old Noa has been cast out in disgrace after becoming pregnant by a Nazi soldier and being forced to give up her baby. She lives above a small rail station, which she cleans in order to earn her keep… When Noa discovers a boxcar containing dozens of Jewish infants bound for a concentration camp, she is reminded of the child that was taken from her. And in a moment that will change the course of her life, she snatches one of the babies and flees into the snowy night.
Noa finds refuge with a German circus, but she must learn the flying trapeze act so she can blend in undetected, spurning the resentment of the lead aerialist, Astrid. At first rivals, Noa and Astrid soon forge a powerful bond. But as the facade that protects them proves increasingly tenuous, Noa and Astrid must decide whether their friendship is enough to save one another—or if the secrets that burn between them will destroy everything.

I’m amazed at the talent this great author has! The story is so realistic that it’s as if she’s lived it. I was riveted to the story so much so that I just finished it; it’s 3:30am! It’s sad, but there is a good ending. A must read!!
This is an interesting story about a very tumultuous time in the world. The author provides insight from a very original and unusual perspective. The plot is not what I had expected but I was caught up in lives of the characters.
Wonderful story, human nature can be very bad
I am a granddaughter of a living holocaust survivor.
She has shared stories of living this life of uncertainty and loss. This book reminds me of a tragic time in our history that has had a personal impact and places me in the steps of those who suffered at the hands of another.
Sad, yet satisfying story set mainly during WWII
Very heartwarming and well written tale of history across the Midwest. Members of my book club revered meeting some children in school who were the orphans
Much enjoyed
This story depicts a piece of history that I not aware of. Love, growth, personal and professional standards, survival – this was a thoroughly enjoyable book.
I thought the story line was a little far fetched for the time it took place
Very good read you won’t be disappointed. Historical fiction. Loved it
Kept my interest… good read
I wanted to like it. It just didn’t pull me in like I had hoped. I usually love this kind of book.
This has been in my TBR read pile. Set towards the end of World War II. The story involves two women and the choices they have made.
Loved this book.
While I liked the book in some ways I found it less than satisfying. I thought that there was too much negativity and too many secrets between the characters which I don’t think would be necessary to tell the story. I also found the ending to be anti climatic.
Great 5 star book.
Wonderful book
I loved it. Couldn’t put down
I really enjoyed this book. It was about such a tragic time in our history. Overtime people have forgotten what it was like to live in Europe under the threat of war, occupation and death. What people did to survive and what some did to protect others. The characters were well drawn and believable. It was one of those books I did not want to end and felt as if I had lost my friends.
Loved it… the characters, their interaction with each other, the backdrop of the war… it was a gem.
