A powerful novel of friendship set in a traveling circus during World War II, The Orphan’s Tale introduces two extraordinary women and their harrowing stories of sacrifice and survival.
Sixteen-year-old Noa has been cast out in disgrace after becoming pregnant by a Nazi soldier and being forced to give up her baby. She lives above a small rail station, which she cleans in order to earn her keep… When Noa discovers a boxcar containing dozens of Jewish infants bound for a concentration camp, she is reminded of the child that was taken from her. And in a moment that will change the course of her life, she snatches one of the babies and flees into the snowy night.
Noa finds refuge with a German circus, but she must learn the flying trapeze act so she can blend in undetected, spurning the resentment of the lead aerialist, Astrid. At first rivals, Noa and Astrid soon forge a powerful bond. But as the facade that protects them proves increasingly tenuous, Noa and Astrid must decide whether their friendship is enough to save one another—or if the secrets that burn between them will destroy everything.

This book kept me engaged during the entire reading. I was both inspired by some of the bravery and appalled by some of the callous acts reported. Living in comparative wealth and freedom that we have today it is difficult to imagine another time.
It so easy to understand and it has some emotional moment
Loved it
Great book, but heartbreaking, also.
Loved this book. Well written. Felt like I was there. Humbling really. Appreciate more the circumstances of that time period. Although fiction, learned a lot.
Good read about an injustice in our country as seen though the eyeof a young Chinese American.
I had a hard time deciding between three or four stars. I liked the basic plot. It kept me interested and had some surprises. There were a few things that put me off a bit: it seemed like one of the characters was always angry and not always with good reason. Another character too often did some imprudent things. It seemed that the author’s plot outline perhaps got in the way of credibility. But nevertheless I did like the book and would recommend it.
I enjoyed the book but found the storyline somewhat predictable.
Excellent!
One of the best
Interesting and gripping narrative set in WWII Geermany.
The Author weaves an intriguing narrative filled with twists and turns. The story is emotionally infused with powerful character development. The Author based this compelling novel on strong historical research. You will find yourself in an unknown environment of tenderness and danger. I highly recommended this story and this Author.
Wonderful
I could not put the book down. It was a somewhat depressing story of the Germans and the war.
A great read. And enlightening.
As Taylor Swift once said – sad, beautiful, tragic.
Very good
A must read! Follow the emotional rollercoaster…
Such a story of struggles just to survive. Well written and hard to put down
This book was beautifully told and elegantly read. Yet, the stories of suffering during WWII were ugly & painful and sad & agonizing. I liked the combination of circus life and Nazi persecution. I was surprised yet pleased with the ending.
