At once intimate and epic, The Orchardist is historical fiction at its best, in the grand literary tradition of William Faulkner, Marilynne Robinson, Michael Ondaatje, Annie Proulx, and Toni Morrison.
In her stunningly original and haunting debut novel, Amanda Coplin evokes a powerful sense of place, mixing tenderness and violence as she spins an engrossing tale of a solitary orchardist who … orchardist who provides shelter to two runaway teenage girls in the untamed American West, and the dramatic consequences of his actions.

Richly developed Characters face enormous challenges and persever together through years of growing trust and love for each other.
Actually, it put me in a bad mood. It’s unsettling
Slow moving and uninteresting.
Unusual story of chosen family, gentleness and caring for others. A novel of living in the country in the turn of the last century.
Beautiful writing, use of language.
An absolutely must read.
Sweet character and relationship development in this sometimes tragic story of characters that reminded me of many people who live in very different modern urban environments.
Slow moving yet engaging story about loss.
Couldn’t get interested. It seemed unbelievable. Couldn’t really relate to characters and plot. .
Excellent book about what it means to have character and what makes up a family. Not quite a 4 Star but worth your time.
I loved this book but the ending left me wanting to know how the main character went on with her life. Other than that, it was a worthwhile read.
Good book, interesting story and characters.
One of the worst books ever! Just when you think there’s going to be a plot or something to connect the dots you are disappointed again! I only finished it thinking there would be a happy ending, NOT!
A very unique story line with well-developed characters.
Good story, not always a happy ending.
This is really well written but very depressing.
Ok. Not great. Dragged out a bit too much but interesting information about orchards
Set in my home state
It reminds me of books we consider classics. Loved the style and thought provoking writing and subject matter. Deeply developed plot and characters.
depressing story – hard to stick with the challenges the characters had. eventually put the book down and turned to something more uplifting
