At once intimate and epic, The Orchardist is historical fiction at its best, in the grand literary tradition of William Faulkner, Marilynne Robinson, Michael Ondaatje, Annie Proulx, and Toni Morrison.
In her stunningly original and haunting debut novel, Amanda Coplin evokes a powerful sense of place, mixing tenderness and violence as she spins an engrossing tale of a solitary orchardist who … orchardist who provides shelter to two runaway teenage girls in the untamed American West, and the dramatic consequences of his actions.

I loved this book. The author was very descriptive . They made the characters and the surroundings come alive. To me it was a very unusual story and it mesmerized me.
Absolutely wonderful book. Story of multi-generational family connected via blood and friendship. Many difficulties and tragedies, but strength of family committment shined through. Descriptions are beautiful and very well written. Would love a sequel!
This book was difficult reading due to content and also the lives of the characters and their different perceptions of each other.
This book was disappointing, all the right things were there for a fantastic story but the author did not carry through on some of the characters. The ending left me with so many questions I could not give it a higher rating. I really wanted to love this book, but I could not….
This book is so boring, I cannot wait to finish it. Thank goodness I just spent $2.00!
Good read I liked it
Beautifully written but an agony to follow the characters through so much travail
Would have liked at least a glimpse into the life Angelene made for herself after leaving the orchard.
I loved the setting, and I loved the kindheartedness of the main character.
Very descriptive period piece that has not often been included in books, TV shows or movies of that time. It shows how people became connected to each other even though they didn’t start out as ‘family’ in the standard way. There was so much a child might have to live through just to survive which stunted their growth throughout their adult lives. …
Thought provoking. Made me realize how lucky my family has been.
I am 95 years old and I have been reading since age 6. This was
the most worthwhile book I have ever read. Since finishing it. I
have gone back to reread many parts. Even at my advanced age
it has changed my outlook on life for the better. Kudos to the
author ! I can understand why it took 8 years to complete.
I will never taste nor look at …
I had an orchard in Washington, This is a wonderful, real story.
I thought it was an interesting, smartly written story with wonderful character development.
