The #1 New York Times bestselling and Newbery Award-winning novel The One and Only Ivan is now a major motion picture streaming on Disney+
This unforgettable novel from renowned author Katherine Applegate celebrates the transformative power of unexpected friendship. Inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, this illustrated book is told from the point of view of Ivan … Ivan, this illustrated book is told from the point of view of Ivan himself.
Having spent twenty-seven years behind the glass walls of his enclosure in a shopping mall, Ivan has grown accustomed to humans watching him. He hardly ever thinks about his life in the jungle. Instead, Ivan occupies himself with television, his friends Stella and Bob, and painting. But when he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from the wild, he is forced to see their home, and his art, through new eyes.
In the tradition of timeless stories like Charlotte’s Web and Stuart Little, Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create an unforgettable story of friendship, art, and hope.
The One and Only Ivan features first-person narrative; author’s use of literary devices (personification, imagery); and story elements (plot, character development, perspective).
This acclaimed middle grade novel is an excellent choice for tween readers in grades 5 to 8, for independent reading, homeschooling, and sharing in the classroom.
Plus don’t miss The One and Only Bob, Katherine Applegate’s return to the world of Ivan, Bob, and Ruby!

I love this book!
You guys should really read this book!!!!!
Ivan is a bit like some people: he won’t make changes for his own good, but he will make them for the good of someone else. Ivan is a gorilla who likes to draw pictures with crayons. He is in his own words “an artist at work.”
This is a story about the best of human qualities, and it is also about the worst of human qualities. Ivan, the story’s …

Ivan is a gorila along with his friend Bob ( a dog) and Ruby ( A Elephant) He used to have a best friend named Stella, But one day she died. They live in a circus but one great day they do to a very nice …
This book is just amazing! When i read it I had low expectations, but it is really, really good! Ivan is a silver back gorilla that is kept for a circus, when his elephant friend dies and another baby elephant arrives he decides he will not let her stay here. They start at a small circus and end at a wonderful zoo! I recommend this book for anyone …
I’m in love with this book. This book brought tears to my eyes, happy ones and sad ones. This book is everything, while this book was based in real life events, the author managed to make it still really fun to read.
i like it a lot and i could read it a lot its a good book
I can absolutely see why this book is award winner. It just really tugs at your heart strings and makes you think. The format of the book is a little different, with very short chapters, and being told from the perspective of an ape means that some of the wording is different. But it is a charming, beautiful story. My 8 year old daughter read this …
Great as a springboard for discussion on animal issues and laws and policies for zoos, animal acts at parks, etc.
its I good book to read.
Wonderful
The one and only Ivan is a fantastic novel for all ages! With it comes happiness, sadness, bravery, hope, courage and friendship. KA Applegate analyses the perspective of a gorilla in captivity. A well structured beautifully written book…
I adored every word of this beautiful story.
a very good book very entertaining and sad but most of all the best happily ever after
What a beautiful story!
I love reading about animals, but to read it from the animals perspective is way cooler! It was a bit of an emotional rollercoaster though. Not every chapter had a happy ending. That’s what made this story brilliant though. It captured everything you could imagine for that space and time. Once, I got choked up, had to put …
it is really good and sad and nice.
I LOVE this book!! I’ve read it maybe a few years ago, so I decided to re-read it to refresh my mind since the movie came out, and it was worth it!! I definitely enjoyed the book more, since I feel like the movie watered it down a bit by removing quite a few scenes. I definitely recommend, especially for young readers 🙂
Great characters and storyline!
Ivan is a silverback (an adult male gorilla) and is nice, easy-going, and friendly. He lives in a shopping mall where he has learned to understand humans, and is content in his simple life watching TV and chatting with the other animals. One day, a baby elephant named Ruby arrives to join the troupe, and everything …
A relatively young cousin recommended I read this a few years ago, and I just read it. Sniffle.
Ivan is based on a real life gorilla that was bought by a family then turned into a shopping mall exhibit when he became too big and uncontrollable. He eventually ended up in a natural habitat zoo.
Other than a concerned little girl, the real heroes …
Great book for kids 7 – 12. The book does go into detail about illegal hunting, poaching and the abuse of animals. I would suggest to parents and teachers to first read the book and then discuss the book with their children or students.
I would love to read this book.
