A simple DNA test is all it takes. Just a quick mouth swab and soon you’ll be matched with your perfect partner—the one you’re genetically made for.
That’s the promise made by Match Your DNA. A decade ago, the company announced that they had found the gene that pairs each of us with our soul mate. Since then, millions of people around the world have been matched. But the discovery has its downsides: test results have led to the breakup of countless relationships and upended the traditional ideas of dating, romance and love.
Now five very different people have received the notification that they’ve been “Matched.” They’re each about to meet their one true love. But “happily ever after” isn’t guaranteed for everyone. Because even soul mates have secrets. And some are more shocking than others…
A word-of-mouth hit in the United Kingdom, The One is a fascinating novel that shows how even the simplest discoveries can have complicated consequences.

The romantic in all of us wants to believe that there is one perfect match for us. Which may or may not be true, and this novel is the perfect answer to that scenario. How would any one react if given the possibility of knowing or learning the name of said person? This book is truly an original story which, once I started I could not put down.
A DNA gene has been discovered to match you with your perfect mate—your soul mate, or “the one” you are meant to spend your life with. In. Marrs’ novel, the reader follows the lives of five different couples who have been matched. Told in third person POV, chapters alternate between couples from the moment they discover they’ve been matched. And no, this is definitely NOT a romance novel. Each situation is unique, bringing complications and problems, with an intriguing twist per couple. I found the chapters easy to follow. Swift pacing and hook chapter endings kept me so engrossed, I finished the book in two days.
There are several surprises in store, some bigger than the others, with a final series of twists that explode one after the other. It’s difficult to say anything about each couple situation without giving away spoilers, but all five story lines are highly interesting. This one would make for great book club discussions.
Imagine if your DNA could be matched to find you the perfect match? What if you were already with someone? What if you were mistakenly matched to the wrong person? What if you were matched to someone who happened to be a serial killer? This is the book the popular Netflix series is based on, and it was a trippy read. Some of it was way out there, but I enjoyed it nevertheless.
The One
fantastic read
I loved this book, a lot going on.
matching people to dying and criminals.

This is what I love about reviewing books, it takes you out of your comfort zone and you get to experience author’s that perhaps might never cross your radar and what a shame that would be as, The One by John Marrs was one of those gems that I may have passed by, an utterly brilliant captivating phycological thriller which kept me entranced till the final pages.
How to adequately convey this story and do it justice, as it truly is a unique concept. I have read an abundance of fiction over the years and the subject expressed in The One, A Gene that matches you with another individual romantically, a soul mate. is truly a unique idea.
In The One, we have what seems like five different stories all wrapped up in a shared Tale, Five Love matches all separate but also intertwined in a bigger picture. The unique writing style of John Marrs makes this very addictive reading, each chapter focusing on a gene match playing in an enthralling loop that makes you want to keep reading.
we have,
Mandy & Richard
Christopher & Amy
Jade & Kevin
Nick & Sally
Ellie & Tim
Finding the love of your life, the other half of you may seem an amazing and wonderous thing. But in reality, the obstacles this can throw at you if you think on this logically are truly shocking, What if your match is married or old, dead or disabled. He or she could be a criminal when you ponder deeper on this matter all sorts of shockingly crazy scenarios spring to mind. The one explores these situations giving us an insight into what could happen when we ask the question WHAT IF?
In conclusion, this book is a breathtaking phycological thriller that keeps you gripped throughout. I’ve tried to convey a sense of what The one gives you without giving too much away as this is one of those stories you really need to go in blind to truly appreciate the sheer brilliance of its storyline. Love doesn’t always run smoothly, in fact in this tale don’t expect the ordinary it abounds with twists and turns that keep you guessing throughout.
I Received a free copy of this e-book from NetGalley in return for a review and this is my own honest opinion.

Couples use the “Match Your DNA” service to find their one and only soulmate.
First released in England, The One follows six couples as they use the “Match Your DNA” service to determine their soulmate. The science has been in place for 10 years and has changed countless lives, so what could go wrong?
“How far would you go to find The One?”
The premise was so intriguing and unique that I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough… yet I didn’t want it to end either! There were more twists and turns in this story than any other book I’ve read, making The One one of my top 3 favorites thrillers EVER, joining the ranks of The Marriage Lie by Kimberly Belle and The Vanishing Year by Kate Moretti!
I COULD NOT PUT THIS DOWN!!! This was nuts. I loved it and was screaming at my kindle through every mini chapter cliffy the author threw at me. What a cool story with so many unexpected twists and turns. Great read.
This is one intense, twisted, dark, addictive novel! Not only is this a very well-written book with wonderfully-interesting characters, but the suspense builds at just the right pace as the story unfolds. Compulsive, gripping and shocking!
What if everyone could be matched with his / her soulmate? Nirvana? Think again. This book will have you turning the pages late into the night.
Engaging concept, craftily executed.
Fantastic… I can’t remember the last time I was simultaneously this entertained and this disturbed. The One is a clever story with great pacing but it’s the characters that make this a standout thriller.
The One is my kind of book… Gorgeously written, and pulsing with heart.
This surprising book is nothing like the Netflix show. It’s so much better. Six POVs and 6 story lines done well and bringing cliffhangers until the very end.
The One by John Marrs is a psychological thriller with a bit of science fiction. The company, Match Your DNA, has declared that it has discovered the gene that links each person with their soul mate. Millions have been matched during the last ten years. But there are downsides. Relationship breakups and divorces have occurred. Dating applications are out of style. But on the positive side, wedding planners and caterers, and divorce lawyers, as well as others, have thrived.
Some of the characters were likeable while others were scary or unlikeable or failed to show significant character growth or depth. But what happens when people have secrets? How does that affect these new relationships?
This book follows five people who have been “Matched”. What happens when they meet their soul mate? The story is told from the five points of view and changes rapidly with each short chapter. While the individual tales all had great potential, the rapid changes made for a loss of continuity. Any one of these stories could have been expanded and been the sole story line in a fantastic novel. Instead, it felt somewhat choppy and underdeveloped. Despite this, I liked the book.
What about the endings? They’re a mixed bag. One had a great twist. One of them still left things up in the air. Others came to a resolution. But will you like how they ended?
I am in the minority on this rating. There are many readers who loved this novel, including readers whose opinion I respect. However, the book didn’t work as well for me. While the multiple viewpoints gives readers insight into more than one character, it broke up the flow for me.
Overall, this book had a great concept, but the flow and depth didn’t work well for me. Despite this, I liked it, but it didn’t escalate to the next level for me.
I received a digital copy of this book in a Goodreads Discussion Group Giveaway. Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way.
4.4
The author’s chapters are brief and alternate between the different character’s stories which made it hard for me to put down, I neeeeeded to know what was going to happen next. I liked that even with a few of the character’s storylines being a bit *boring,* they all got interesting towards the end of the book.
I think it’s a good choice for anyone who feels like they’re stuck in a reading rut. It was fast-paced and easy to get sucked in
The premise of this book was fascinating. I was intrigued by the concept of taking a DNA test to find your one true love. I enjoyed reading all of the different scenarios the characters found themselves in after taking this “Ancestry DNA meets Match.com” test. My only criticism of the book is that there were a few too many characters to follow.
I loved every minute of this book! A fascinating idea, well done, interesting characters, some suspense (which was great), enough “happily-ever-afters” to satisfy the closet romantic in me, and some room for me to decide for myself what I think happened in some of the cases. This one definitely makes my “read it again” list!
A great read. The ending made me think Volume 2 is coming.
Childish, Lifetime movie-quality melodrama.
I read the book after watching the show on Netflix – liked the book better. Easy read – entertaining.
