★ High Alert: Mermaids vs Sharks! ★
Isla has lived most of her mermaid life on land, but now she’s being sent to the sea to help save the world on behalf of the Brunswick Academy for Gifted Girls.
When Isla is sent to a settlement of merfolk just off the shore of Venice Beach to capture one of the last remaining totems that will bring the magical world back into balance, she’s excited…and … excited…and nervous.
Isla may be a mermaid, but she’s more used to humans than her own people.
She’s certainly not used to a merman like Kai.
Like most merman, Kai is easy on the eyes. But more than that, he’s a brave and cheerful ray of sunshine who’s truly impressed with Isla.
If Kai is the mate for Isla that the fates have promised her, she has no complaints.
Except that Kai has a secret…
Kai has spent his whole life at the Venice Beach settlement. Orphaned when his parents were accidentally killed by humans, Kai has always thought of the settlement’s leader, Quinn, as a dad. His squad commander, Brae, has always been kind of like a mom…a really tough mermaid warrior mom.
For a century, the merfolk have protected themselves from the human population that poses a mounting danger.
The totem is incredibly powerful. Keeping it in the settlement’s possession would give the merfolk a defense for any threat they could ever face.
So when Quinn tells Kai he has the totem before Isla even arrives…Kai has no choice but to keep the secret from Isla.
But as Kai and Isla start to get closer and it seems like somebody is already using the totem with deadly consequences, it gets harder and harder to choose between the merfolk he’s always called his family… and the woman who just might be his mate.

So, she makes it to California and her guide, Kai, before she faints in his arms. Isla is a mermaid, but also the fourth Brunswick Academy graduate to go look for one of the elemental totems. As a mermaid, of course, she is sent to look for the water totem. Sent to California, she experiences a new lifestyle with the merfolk there. Kai , one of the mermen is asked to take care of her and help her, but also to distract her, as these mere people do not want to give up their strongest magic against humans.
Like the other three books of the Brunswick Academy Quest, it is well-written, fast-paced, packed with adventure and it highlights the development from an untried person to a mature, responsible adult.

Isla is a mermaid who has lived on land most of her life. Kai is a merman who has lived with the Venice Beach settlement his whole life. A totem to help balance magic, fated mates who seem to live world’s apart and apparent danger help to propel this book to the next level. Kai is torn between keeping the totem a secret from Isla or tell her and hope everything works out in the end. Good book with interesting characters.

Another girl finds her love and faces her graduation challenge head on. I received a free copy of this book. This review was posted voluntarily.
While you don’t have to read all the previous books in the series I think it would be helpful. The book was entertaining, but for me things just seemed a little flat. I’m not sure if it was the characters or what, but I don’t feel that this book was as good as it could have been.
