The Hale family is obsessed with status, power, and control. No problem is too big their money can’t solve.Royce Hale manipulated me into giving him everything. My virginity. My hand in marriage. My heart. And as soon as he got what he wanted, he callously sold me off for a cool ten million. In the boardroom and the twisted game his family plays, he says the only rule is to win at all costs. … to win at all costs.
Yesterday I learned a painful lesson not to trust the prince of Cape Hill. Today I’ll destroy his carefully laid plans and show him just how badly he’s already lost.
All the money in the world won’t be able to stop me.
The Obsession is the second book of the Filthy Rich Americans trilogy and should be read following The Initiation.

This book deserves more than 5 stars!!! Nikki Sloane is the master at suspenseful romance that leaves you hanging on for more!!
Marist, Royce and Macalister’s story continues in this riveting tale of lust, games, deception, and steaminess that Nikki Sloane has created. She has blown me away and I am trying to put myself back together. A must read by this author! She never disappoints!
I had to give myself a couple days to write this review. This book was so twisted, emotional and turned my world around with every word. This world Nikki Sloane has created has made me obsessed with everything Royce and Marist. She has a freakin masterpiece that continues this story.
Get ready for the ride of your life. When I read Nikki Sloane’s work, I feel so included in every scene and every word. She is a master at plots, characters, twists, surprises and everything in between.
My heart hasn’t stopped the fast beating for a while after the cliffhanger that I just read. This book created a whirlwind for Marist. The twisted world with Royce, Marist, Macalister, and other key characters will blow you away and leave you with the biggest book hangover.
This book is meant to be read after The Initiation. Marist and Royce have been through a lot. It leaves right off where the last book stopped. Your heart is in your throat, waiting to see what will happen. And you can never prepare for the deception, dirtiness, games, and literally twists and turns that this book holds.
Get your kindle charged, a cup of coffee and plan on this book being read in one reading. You won’t be able to put it down.
After the cliffhanger from The Initiation, I couldn’t wait for The Obsession to hit my kindle! Once I started reading, I couldn’t stop. Every filthy, f****ed up thing you could ever imagine…Times it by 10….and you have The Obsession.
I felt for Marist in the beginning. I mean, who wants to be sold for a cool 10 million? Not me. Ok, there are some exceptions, but Macalister is not one of them. Marist has good intentions of trying to get away from him, but he cheats at every turn. Where is Royce you ask? I can’t be % sure, hopefully finding a way to beat his father at his game. And this cliffhanger….I need Book 3 now! I’m dying to know how it all ends!
The Obsession is manipulation 101. Where deceit knows no bounds. Your limits will be tested in the most sinful ways. I loved they every minute of it!
The Obsession is book 2 in the Filthy Rich Americans Trilogy. The Initiation must be read first. Both books end on a cliffhanger.
The Initiation ended with a bombshell that left all of us shell shocked and the hits keep coming in The Obsession, the second book in the Filthy Rich Americans trilogy. This gripping story continues with Marist smack-dab in the middle of a power struggle between Royce and Macalister and the stakes have just been raised. I’m obsessed with this provocative and intriguing story; not knowing who to trust and at time conflicted, loving and hating both father and son equally. When I reached yet another cliffhanger ending, I was blindsided and completely dumbfounded. I simply can’t imagine what’s next, but I’m going to be anxiously counting the days until we reach the conclusion.
Macalister Hale had always controlled his business and household with an iron fist, the master of Machiavellian cunning, but his grip becomes to unravel as we become privy to his obsession with Marist. There are some things he can’t control, despite his threats, and Marist proves to be a worthy opponent.
Royce sold Marist to Macalister for one-hundred thousand shares of HBHC stocks and now he had to live with the consequences. Marist is under Macalister’s thumb, but she’s not going down without a fight. Now she knows both Hales are the enemy and she can’t trust anyone. Royce has betrayed her before; Marist knows he doesn’t deserve another chance to redeem himself, despite what he says.
“I’m done. You understand me? I’m not waiting anymore, especially for someone who screwed up my entire life. Six years ago, you called me a nobody, and nothing’s ever been the same. The plan I had for my life is over, thanks to you. Get ready, Royce. Expect me to return the favor.”
Macalister refused to accept he’d been outsmarted by Marist, at the Initiation ceremony, and he’s sure once she’s submitted to him he will be in control of his compulsion with her. Macalister begins to trade favors with Marist, in exchange for time spent with him, including teaching her to play chess in the evenings.
“I feel infected. Thoughts of you take up time I don’t have to spare. And you cloud my judgement to the point it has become a serious issue. You’ve denied me, and more than once, which I believe is the root of the problem. Once we put it right, I can move forward.”
There’s more intrigue, betrayal and deception before it’s all said and done. And the secrets, when finally revealed, can prove to be deadly. Marist should have had ‘Trust No One’ tattooed on her forehead, to remind her the entire Hale family is dangerous.
“Win at all costs. That was what I had to do. Losing the battle was all right as long as I won the war.”
I received a free copy of this book from the author.
In order for you to read The Obsession you have to read The Initiation first. This is not a stand alone series.
I struggled with this edition of Filthy Rich Americans. I can’t wrap my head around the games the Hale family plays. Macalistar Hale is the worlds biggest (insert expletive here.) Seriously – his need to play games with his children and their happiness doesn’t make sense to me.
I must be missing something I’ve not picked up on. There’s something else going on here but what? That’s what all readers of this series are aiming to find out.
Wow….another phenomenal page-turner from Nikki Sloane. After reading The Initiation I could not wait to get my hands on this book. The Obsession was gripping intense and mind blowing, it was more manipulative, depraved and hotter that the first book and I was hooked and at the edge of my seat from start to finish. The story continues from where the first book left off and it evolved so much further from The Initiation but in an entirely different way than expected.
Full of tension, angst and emotion this novel will make your jaw drop and your sense of propriety will be tested. This was a three way triangle that you will not be able to look away from as betrayal and deceit become even more evident. Nikki Sloane certainly created a fascinating world and compelling characters with the story.
That being said, I have to admit I was a bit disappointed in Marist in this novel. I expected so much more from her and I found her to be a bit weak and annoying at times.
However I can’t wait for the next book as that cliff-hanger ending had me screaming for more. The Obsession was a phenomenal read and I would highly recommend it to all those who love suspense, drama, steam with their romance.
5/5 Stars for the continuation of Filthy Rich Americans, The Obsession!
Book Two resumes immediately after the end of The Initiation and does not skip a beat! Marist must now deal with the consequences of Royce’s choice to accept the family company’s shares over being with Marist. In name they are engaged, but within the walls of the Hale Estate she belongs to Macalister. The plot’s progress is in the shared time the two spend in Macalister’s office playing chess. The stakes are high, and Marist is a willing participant of the games she plays against Macalister in the hope of setting herself free. But Royce warns Marist that his father only wagers the highest of stakes when he knows he will win, and Macalister wants one thing – one person in particular – Marist, and he will play at all cost to have her.
This was such a delicious read! While I find myself rooting for Marist and Royce, I can’t help to secretly cheer on Macalister. I really enjoy the first person narration as it only gives the reader Marist’s ordeal in dealing with the Hale men. It makes it really difficult to decide who has the more insidious agenda, Macalister or Royce, and I for one am loving this!!!!! Nikki Sloane has such amazing control of her characters. I really want to know so much more about Macalister and Royce, but it would ruin their characterization which is perfectly consistent throughout book two. Neither of the two men seem vulnerable but enough is given to the reader to understand the hate/hate relationship between the the father-son duo. Unfortunately, Marist is the sacrifice! I should also add that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the running Greek mythology theme that is the undertone in the plot of this novel. While in book one the focus was on Medusa, in The Obsession the underlying theme is the story of the Minotaur. The myth is interwoven with the storyline of Marist and Macalister so perfectly that it feels like a modern day retelling. Macalister is a beast and he has no qualms about this. He is ruthless in his aristocratic arrogance.
I cannot wait for what’s in store in Book Three! The ending was perfect, with a tantalizing little twist that had me squealing with excitement!
Bravo Nikki Sloane! Bravo! I am hooked and begging for Book Three! November can’t come soon enough!
3.5-4 stars. The story continues and the intrigue unfolds in The Obsession by Nikki Sloane! This is the second book in the Filthy Americans trilogy and the continuation of Marist’s story. I can’t tell much about the story without giving anything away, but I will say that after the cliffhanger book one ended on, things get even more twisty and turny.
This book pushes the limits and knocked me out of my comfort zone. There were a few scenes that I was not happy about, but I still love the overall series story. There is a lot of angst and Marist doesn’t know who she can trust. I am really pulling for her to get a happy ending with her fiance, Royce, but I’m worried it may not happen. The first book left us with many questions and they are not really answered in this book, just more questions added. I still really liked Marist and felt for her when she was put in such terrible situations. I still like Royce as he does appear to be on her side, I’m just hoping he does not truly betray her.
While I didn’t quite enjoy this book as much as book one, I am very much looking forward to the conclusion of the trilogy. I hope Marist comes out on top with a real love and a happy future!
This author. She is simply an amazing story teller. When I say this book had me hooked, I mean it literally. I did nothing but read until I finished because I was swept away in this twisted world and it’s characters. And I know most people do not like cliffhangers. But I happen to love them. And once again, this was a doozy of a cliffhanger.
Manipulation. Lies. Secrets. Lust. The Obsession has it all. We were left with a cruel twist and deceitful ending at the end of The Initiation.. The Obsession picks up right where The Initiation ended.
Marist a young woman that is tuck between a rock and hard place. She is being pushed and pulled between two manipulative men, Royce.. and his father, Macalister. Mind games. Deception. Secrets. Manipulation. Her world is now a twisted game and she doesn’t know which way to go. She may be in the middle of a big pile of mind-fuckery, but Marist is no pushover. She’s strong, fierce, and independent.
Between Macalister and Royce, even I have a hard time telling which one has good intentions and which one has bad intentions. They are expert manipulators and liars. I’m eager to read book three to find out what these two have stored for Marist.
I adore Nikki’s books so much. They are all so forbidden and taboo. The Obsession is no different. I really enjoyed book two and can’t wait to read book three.
**Be sure to read book one, The Initiation, before diving into book two. These are not standalone and are highly recommended you read them in order!!
The Obsession is the 2nd book in the Filthy Rich Americans and a book that I couldn’t wait to get! I read it the day it hit my Kindle!
The Obsession picks up where The Initiation left off. So, if you are wanting to read this series make sure to start off with book 1.
This is a story that had me thinking that these people are seriously messed up! There were twists and turns! Macalister is seriously messed up! And, there were some seriously hot & messed up scenes. Talk about power play. Just when Royce thought he won, Macalister would one up him. Marist is trying to survive through the power struggle between the father and son.
I can’t wait to see how this series will end! There is a huge cliffhanger at the end of The Obsession so be prepared and I need The Deception now! 4.5 stars
Holy shit! What has Nikki Sloane done to me?! This book took this story to the next depraved and scandalous level…and I loved every filthy and wicked minute of it!
There is definitely a twist at the end that I certainly didn’t expect. It makes the wait for The Deception that much more difficult.
I loved the elements of Greek mythology and Chess within the story. Each of those elements were well played throughout the entire story.
I need more Marist and Royce and I can’t wait to watch them conquer Mt. Olympus together.
I was questioning my own sanity while reading The Obsession by Nikki Sloane. Because I was losing my mind over this messed up, twisted and deviant story. And I was also loving every bittersweet, intense and complicated feeling Nikki Sloane created with her masterful writing. The power games ran parallel with mind games and the adrenaline rush left me dizzy and breathless.
I am having a hard time figuring out how to tell you about the story. The main story line is still the same. Marist is engaged with Royce Hale to save her family from disgrace and poverty. And Royce is engaged with an epic battle of power and control with his father Macalister Hale. Macalister will play a very significant role in this story. Ans my feelings towards this cruel, cold, calculating, ruthless and powerful man is something like Marist. A potent and complex mixture of fear, intrigue, hate and curious attraction. So many factors are intermingled here that I could not predict what the next chapter will bring. Each conversation was a game. Each touch was a weapon. Nikki Sloane has pushed limits so far away in The Obsession that I am not sure I have any. It was sexy. It was filthy. It was dramatic romance at it’s best with angst, heartbreak and sin.
I am feeling so connected with Marist. Yes she was not always perfect or strong. In face of all the impossible challenges she put up a commendable fight. Her choices were questionable sometimes but morality is a line in sands. She sacrificed herself over and over again to protect people she loves. And yet she has control over the dangerous and powerful Hale men in a freaked up way. She is beauty and intelligence wrapped up in seduction and defiance. And my heart broke for her and Royce. It was like driving off a cliff. I chanted and prayed for some particularly brutal and heart-rending things not to happen. But they happened. And I had nowhere to hide. Royce was strong, dominating, gorgeous and worth of every pain and tear Marist had. I was left with the cruel ending and I barely survived it. I honestly hope things will be better in last book.
I am obsessed with The Obsession by Nikki Sloane. The flawed and perfectly imperfect characters. The storm of corrupt, seductive , dark and gritty emotions. A story that found it’s way to the deepest and messed up corners of my heart. And I am nothing but extreme emotional chaos.
Received ARC for Honest Review
Oh she so went there… If you found The Initiation provocative, coloring outside the lines, tinged with unease and suspense, well, The Obsession is a level or two beyond that!
Marist is caught between the men of a powerful family. I honestly don’t know what is going to happen, what choices will be made by the end of this. Usually you can get an inkling of how things might turn out, but I just can’t see it. The whole book had me on the edge but the ending was insane! The men may have an agenda but Marist seems to be a good game player as well. Now I just wait in agony until the final book.
Holy Smokin’ story hell.
When Nikki Sloane ups the stakes, she doesn’t hold back. If you thought things couldn’t get any hotter, dirtier or more deviant than ‘The Initiation’ (Part 1 of ‘Filthy Rich Americans’), you’d be wrong. So, so wrong.
Marist and Royce have fought and struggled to be together. To be just another young couple falling in love, but Macalister is having none of that.
The man is in the very words of the book. Obsessed. He’s a dirty and depraved soul but it makes some taboo-ish, filthy scenes.
Royce is working hard to beat his father, but somehow, Macalister seems to be two steps ahead of his son in every move. He’s trying to make Marist his by forcing her to spend time with him, but she’s not an easy catch.
This book was fast-paced, hot, sinfully dirty and oh, so delicious when Marist and Royce got to be alone. Macalister might think he’s the better man, but we and Marist see the truth.
But watch out, there’s a sting in this tale, one you won’t see coming.
Can’t wait for the conclusion to this series.
Bring on ‘The Deception’.
I concur. Obsession is the right word for this book, second to a wildly enjoyable The Initiation.
I was like an addict after the impressive ending of that book, and now the story is right there, at that very combustible point where Marist is feeling a volcano inside her that threatens to destroy her sanity. One thing I admire is her resilience and her will not to be defeated. Yet it was harrowing to watch her shredded emotions. The electricity was crackling among Macalister, Royce and Marist like a raging storm.
I loved the references to mythology which provide a sort of gravitas to the tension inside the Hale mansion. Macalister is the sole master in a game of manipulation and power control that I found simply brilliant and pure decadence. I can even imagine the Parcae orchestrating mortals’ lives, crossing and tangling the strings of their fates with deep motives and sinister outcomes. Macalister would be a worthy son to their tactics. I just adore this sensual devil! Now I have private conversations with him in my head
This duel of three is tantalizing, alive with secrets, betrayal, undercover plans and an epic sense of proprietary lust. The three of them are bound in a challenge of control and revenge that had me ensnared to every single word. And it builds up to a monstruous crescendo that is mind-blowing.
I was standing to bear the excitement better and I had to grab onto a door to brace myself for it!
I admit that the plot goes down a path that I was craving, but it basically strips Marist of her power and makes Royce almost redundant. Dangerous.
It doesn’t stop there. There’s more. Hot Royce, obsessed Macalister, betrayal upon betrayal, business ruthlessness, and another cliffhanger that will turn you into stone like a furious Medusa.
Magnificent. My next goal in life is stalking the third book.
I am obsessed with this book! 5 stars
Holy smokes, what did I just read?! My mind is blown in the best way! I wish I could give more than 5 stars! I am obsessed and consumed with this fascinating world & fascinating characters Nikki Sloane created! I was so obsessed that I did not want to put down this book! This book picks up right where The Initiation left off, and then took me on a roller-coaster ride of tension, emotion & literal gasp inducing twists & turns. If you love to leave the real world & want to become obsessed with a book world that has enthralling yet twisted storytelling and compelling characters like I do, then read this book & series!
I received a copy of this ebook from Social Butterfly PR for my honest review.
You MUST READ The Initiation before reading The Obsession, with that being side we pick up right where we left Marist and Royce off.
I am literally obsessed with this series so far. I get completely sucked into the world that Nikki Sloane has created and the characters she has written. There is so much suspense, twists and turns, drama, and steamy. I LOVE the continued theme of Greek mythology and that more of it is worked in. It adds something different and unique to the story compared to other romance novels out there now.
I was dying to read this book after the ending of The Initiation. I HATED Royce for what he did, I mean, the man claimed to truly want Marist and then he does that?! But he is up to something and it is all part of his plan. However, he left Marist in the hands of his father.
The things Macalister does to Marist, the way he plays her, exudes his dominance on her frustrates me, but what frustrates me more is the fact of how easily she lets it happen and the one time Royce witnesses it, he leaves. Doesn’t step in but just leaves! I was so angry.
But despite a lot of my dislike towards Macalister and the dumb stuff that Marist tends to do and the lack of Royce really fighting for his girl so far I LOVED this story. I am completely sucked into the mystery of it all and the drama. I can’t wait to see where this goes and finally get answers to all the questions that have been unanswered.
WOW! The Obession is one more rollercoaster ride of twists, turns, flips and drops. The Hale family takes their heritage to another level of crazy. Picking and choosing who will be allowed into their inner circle going as far as choosing who they will marry and benefit the most from. Macalister Hale sees himself as the Almighty, what he says is law, what he believes is law and he will manipulate everyone and bend them to his will even for sport. After choosing his oldest sons soon to be wife Marist he finds his self obsessed with her and doing all he can to wheel and deal to see how far he can go. He seems to be a cold hearted man who only considers his own feelings and never once considering how it effects the others in his life including his sons or his wife.
Royce Hale has had feelings for Marist for years and tried to keep his feelings for her from everyone just so his father would not know and destroy his dreams but the Old Man sees all and will stop at nothing to have his way.
Marist Northcott is a sweet girl trying to finish her last year at college when she finds herself being married off to Royce Hale to save her family from ruin. She discovers she has feelings for Royce but shes not sure if shes being played or if he feels the same. After being forced to move in with the Hales and having to conform to Macalisters views on how to act, walk, dress, and speak she wonders if its all worth it. The crazy and most outragest thing is finding out how he plays her against Royce and even his wife Alice. Marist finds out all the dark and deviant things about the Hale family as time goes on but trying to resist is futile because Macalister holds all the cards to destroy her life and her family.
Nikki Sloane has a way of pulling you into her stories that you can’t help but have all the feels even for the psychopaths. This is one of those times where you want to see everyone have a HEA. But will Macalister destroy everything and eveyone or will Royce be able to save him and Marist? Then you have Alice, Macalister’s wife who is no ones fool, will she be able to come out unscathed or will she be just another pawn in his jacked up world? With this books cliffhanger I’m not sure I can wait til November to see what happens and how it all ends. Well done Nikki Sloane, well done.
Sooooo I finished The Obsession a couple of days ago but waited to do the review because I needed to be able to say something beyond “HOLY SHIT. BUY THIS BOOK NOW!” Now that I have had a few days to let my brain unscramble and actual words to filter in, here goes.
The Obsession, the second in the Filthy Rich Americans trilogy, picks up right where The Initiation (book 1) leaves off. Marist is left stunned, horrified and paralyzed by Royce essentially selling her to his father. However, Marist isn’t the meek girl that he and Macalister believe her to be. She is wicked smart, decides to NOT be a pawn and enters the game that these two men are playing and she proves that she can hold her own with the big dogs.
Nikki Sloane has taken a rich men power story and has flipped it on its head by creating a heroine who is powerful in her own way, intelligent and unwilling to lay down and take whatever role they decide for her. Marist takes absolute center stage in this installment of the trilogy as she battled wits with her fiance’s father. Sloane has layered intrigue, over seduction, over mind games and topped it with some of the most shocking, delightfully sinful “WTF” moments I have read in a long time. What her characters are willing to do, the lengths they are willing to go and the heat that they generate is completely off the charts. Sloane’s ability to make it so that not only her characters but also the reader has no idea who to trust and who to believe is awesome and the twists that are strategically placed throughout are deliciously scandalous. Obsession again ends on a cliffhanger and this one is even more abominable than the one that closed out Initiation. So much so that I sat and cursed Nikki’s name a blue streak while staring at the last page.
This is an absolute MUST READ story and for those who are among the “it all has to be out to start” crowd, I would tell you to reconsider. Reading, absorbing and resetting yourself after each of these books is a must, so start now because it gives you just enough time before the conclusion The Deception comes out.
3.5 stars
I have to say that with this installment, I didn’t know where or how this story was going to go. It just felt different for me compared to how enthralled I was with The Initiation. I wasn’t feeling the same way with this book. Don’t get me wrong, there’s still twist and turns and cringe worthy moments.
Being that this is book 2 in a trilogy, by the end we get a huge cliffhanger that I NEED to find out what happens in the finale and see how it all plays out.
