When Lila Moore inherits her grandfather’s house, she finds herself in a small Midwestern town where margarine is never an acceptable substitution for butter, a coveted family recipe can serve as currency, and the friend who will take your darkest secrets to the grave will still never give you the secret to her prize-winning begonias.
Lila is charmed by the people of Auburn, from the blue-eyed … blue-eyed lawyer with the southern drawl to the little old lady who unceasingly tries to set Lila up with her grandson. But when strange things begin to happen, Lila realizes some of her new friends are guarding a secret like its a precious family heirloom. It’s a dangerous secret, and it has come back to haunt them. Lila is caught in the middle, and her life may depend on uncovering it. But even if she can, can she stay in Auburn when not everyone is what they seem, and even the house wants her gone?

I thought the opening idea of he obits was clever. Hopefully someone will write one like that for me (maybe I should write my own?)…Anyway I like old houses, traditions, secrets, small towns, meddlesome women….everything about the book! With a little romance thrown in for good measure.
I like that the characters listen to the “little voices/vibes” they get. I hope more will unfold about Juniper in coming books.
Just a great read!
I just finished reading this for the second time and enjoyed it. It’s quirky and not totally predictable. I liked the small town characters and their loyalty to each other.
This book was a treat! Even a few twists and turns. A very deliberately charming book.
This was a cute read with lots of mystery to it. I wasn’t aware of was part of a series when I picked it up. I feel like if I wanted to stop now I could and be satisfied with the ending, although there’s more after reading the blurbs of the next two books.
It was a fun take on an otherwise sad subject. I enjoyed it. And there were some good recipes to boot!
Good entertainment. An easy summer-holiday read.
I enjoyed reading this – a little different take on a romance and the women who dealt with their problems on their own.
Lila moves back to the small town her grandfather lived in and decides to fix up his old home. She is staying with her aunt Ada and is learning quickly that small town living takes getting use to. Between her aunts friends trying to set her up on dates, the secrecy of homemade desserts, the mystery of why her grandfather left the town he loved, Lila has her hands full!!
This is a love story of a small town, the love of eccentric neighbors, old trucks, socials, the fact everyone knows your business and it doesn’t hurt that Lila has not one but two men interesred in her.
The mystery is slight and secondary to the town and people. The house Lila inherited seems haunted just a bit and it’s clear someone wants to scare her. The little girl Juniper is a delight as is her father Max. Then there is the hunky lawyer Asher helping with her grandfathers estate.
The author adds just a touch of Alice Hoffman’s magic realism with the pond behind the house and it works well. The writing style is clear, simple and works perfectly in telling the tale of this town. There are plenty of laugh out loud scenes to enjoy and the author relishes her telling of the story.
I’ve been telling everyone about this book! Loved it!!!!
Not my usual type of read, but I enjoyed it. I’m really not a fan of paranormal and truthfully purchased this book in error. Just enough of the macabre to hold my interest. Would read another by this author.
A fun read.
Likable characters with a little bit of mystery and supernatural thrown in. Enjoyable read.
A nice detour to a lighter read.
It is just such a novel idea I had to read it. Enjoyed it and every time I see it on sale I check it out again and it makes me smile.
It was just ok for me.
I love the hometown feel and the warm, human (not perfect) characters. The mystery is not entirely predictable. I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series.
A good read for a rainy day or a day at the beach. Great characters!
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. I will read it again.
I live in Nebraska and it is placed here in a small town.
Just a fun read.
