Like any superhero, Evan Smoak has a nemesis and a secret identity. That identity is anonymity clothed to blend into his surroundings. He lives by the Ten Commandments taught to him by the closest thing he ever had to a father. These are NOT the commandments taught in Sunday school.
This sophomore effort in the series is exciting, well written, and compelling, but somehow it is lacking in an almost intangible something the first book had. Perhaps it is merely my perception derived from immediately jumping into THE NOWHERE MAN without taking time to finish digesting ORPHAN X. Yet, maybe not so intangible. If I had to put my finger on it, I would say this book lacks the human messiness of the first.
As I was reading about items that seemed too good to be true even in the 21st century, I did some Googling. RoamZone? Real. Floating bed? Real. Sub Zero? Real. All those vodkas? Real. So here we have another writer using real world items to solidify the reader’s suspension of disbelief. I’m someone who enjoys a good vodka martini every once in a while. I will most certainly be looking to try some of those heretofore unknown to me brands that Evan Smoak enjoys. The vodka references could become as famous as James Bond’s gin martinis.
Although I found that little something missing, this is absolutely an exciting page turner. I was most impressed by the imagery Hurwitz’s writing conveys. I often found myself admiring the unique perfection of a phrase… not once, but over and over again. Whether he is describing a person, place, or thing, you cannot help but visualize it with your mind’s eye the illustration he paints with words.
I am continuing to binge the series by immediately diving into HELLBENT. This is one rollercoaster ride I wouldn’t miss for the world.
Another great installment in the Orphan X series by Gregg Hurwitz, The Nowhere Man has Evan Smoak in a bad situation. Kidnapped by unknown assailants and locked in an unrecognizable room, in true Smoak fashion, all he can worry about is whether someone has called his secret phone for help.
While I didn’t like this book as much as the first, I was still on pins and needles as he tried again and again to escape. Not to worry, Evan Smoak is on top of his game and will always figure something out. He’s kind of like a modern-day McGyver.
This is a series that is going to some exciting places, and I intend to be along for the ride to the end. I read this via my local library through a digital loan, and I gave it three and one-half stars rounded up to four!
The Nowhere Man: An Orphan X Novel
(Evan Smoak, Book 2)
by Gregg Hurwitz
The Nowhere Man: An Orphan X Novel is book 2 in the Even Smoak Series; another suspense filled thriller where the action, twists, turns and mayhem never stops, and truly should not be missed. A page-turner filled with suspense that intensifies page by page, within the tight plot. Great descriptions of the characters that heightens the suspense by the continuing battle of wits between characters. While each book can be read as a standalone, they are much better read in order as a series, that creates an amazing read.
Read one of Mr. Hurwitz’s books and you will want to read them all; I spent an entire Saturday devouring his newest release, Into the Fire. I was struck by the storyline, in the 5th book (which, I had read first); as I had received it as an ARC. Recognizing the authors name I realized I had the first 4 books of the series and was pleased to settle in for a long reading adventure filled with suspense, mystery, and lots of action. I could not put these books down, until I was finished (with what I have).
I thoroughly enjoy all this series about Orphan X, a plot for the reader loving high action filled suspense. I am looking forward to any future books by Gregg Hurwitz and the follow-up installment/s in Gregg Hurwitz’ Orphan X series. Giving both the author and this book 5-stars.
I love this series by this author! Have read all of the books in it and think the main character is wonderfully damaged but so entertaining! The plots are interesting and keep you guessing as to how they will be resolved. Never a dull moment!
Great 2nd book in the series, complete page turner
This is a great series.
A new protagonist to follow. Orphan X is raised as an assassin. He is good at his trade, but would like out.
Strange story line.
Love this series
Awesome book!
Bruce Willis on Steroids
You know how, in the movies, the hero is beaten up and shot up and struggles along, taking out bad guys, and then he’s beaten up again and hurt more, and takes out more bad guys, and then he’s smashed down and beaten up yet again, but he keeps on coming like the Energizer Bunny? Yeah, it’s just like that. And the adrenaline rush of the story keeps you reading. It’s dark, it’s grim, it is dystopia magnified, but it’s a lot of fun as a thriller despite all the blood, and gore, and nastiness. Certainly if you were reading just this book, it is a good stand-alone story. However it depends heavily on the first book for the deeper background and explanation of how things got to be where they are. (Pertinent data is, of course, reiterated as needed.) In many ways, that one is kinder and gentler than this volume despite themes of abuse and terrorism; book two ramps things up but concludes all active business with no cliffhangers within its own plot. However, there are more volumes to come in the larger story arc. Go, good guys!
This is the first book I have read from this author, but it won’t be the last!!
OMG!!! This book was so hard to read and finish. While I liked the first 60-70pgs and the last 70-80pg, the 200+pgs in between were ABSOLUTELY MONOTONOUS!!!!! So much so, I actually put this book away for awhile and read two other books before I went back to finish it.
The whole captivity section dragged on WAAAYYY TOOOO LOOONNNGGG!!!!! That whole section could have and definitely should have been pared down by at least 50-60pg that wouldn’t have taken away from the overall story.
The ending was great and the only reason I will continue with the series, that and I just plain like Evan Smoak.
Nowhere Man by Gregg Hurwitz is book two in the Evan Smoak series. This book could easily be read as a standalone, although I would suggest reading book one as well. Active members of the Orphan program nearly succeeded in assassinating Evan. After the confrontation, Evan resumes his undertaking of helping those unable to turn to anyone else. While tying up loose ends with a human trafficking ring, Evan is kidnapped.
Most of Nowhere Man takes place while Evan is in his kidnapper’s custody. What proceeds is an intricate game of cat and mouse where both men consistently underestimate each other. This conflict makes for suspenseful interactions that kept me eager for a resolution. I was honestly unsure how Evan would make it out of his situation. When the ending did come, it was quite epic and served as a turning point for Evan.
I am surprised at how attached I have become to this character. The author is not only presenting a thrilling vigilante story. Evan is a vastly sympathetic character that the reader gets to know slowly through his adventures. I, of course, have already started the next book in the series. I can tell reaching the end will make for a bittersweet wait until more books come out. Nowhere Man was given to me by St Martin’s Press through NetGalley for my honest opinion. I encourage all readers to come to their own conclusions.
After deciding he can’t stop his ways and that it was safer for him alone Evan sets out again to right injustices against the little guys. Caught unawares Evan gets snagged and now has to get himself free or suffer the consequences. There’s plenty of action and fighting which means a high body count and tons of excessively descriptive pages of fluff as Evan battles not only physically but emotionally as well. Unfortunately he’s still out to save the world and with the surprise revelations now he may have a bigger reason to fight than ever.
I have to admit this time all of the imagery and descriptive narration just got old. I found myself scheming to bypass the more mundane because I wanted to know what happened. The author keeps the action going with plenty of twist and turns so I didn’t want to miss out, since it ended in a cliffhanger I have to read the next one too.
Wow, this thriller will have you on the edge of your seat. This is part of the Orphan X Series. The NoWhere Man is Orphan X/ Evan Smoak who helps the powerless. He continues his work as an assassin with an off the books Black O’s program. Lots of suspense in this book as he is drugged and captured. No shortage of drama or suspense. A great read that I read as a reader copy and voluntarily chose to write a review.
Evan Smoak is working to take down a human trafficking ring, but as he finds a last piece he needs to stop, he is captured by forces unknown. When he wakes up, he has no idea where he is. Can he escape?
I’m not usually a fan of plotlines where we follow a prisoner, and this book definitely fell into some of those pacing pitfalls. Still, this was a fun read with good twists to keep things fresh, and I was turning pages quickly most of the time. The character development for Evan was quite interesting here, and he is surrounded by a mostly strong cast of new characters, although one of them felt over the top. Overall, a fun, page turning thriller.
