This book is a stroll through the brain of a stone cold psychopath.
The POV alternates between the victim and the killer and it just ramped and ramped until I could barely breathe for my need to know what was going to happen…
…even as I hated that my inability to stop meant I was careening toward the end of this spectacular book.
You do not want to miss this one!
Thank you to Catherine Ryan Howard, Blackstone Publishing and Edelweiss for giving me this DRC in exchange for an honest review.
5 stars
WOW! 5 Stars for The Nothing Man. This book had me hanging on every single word and had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. 3 stars were automatically earned by being a “book in a book” format; as this is one of my favorite ways to tell a story. The other 2 were for the suspense, the incredible storytelling and great writing.
The Nothing Man is told in 2 viewpoints. The first is the book “The Nothing Man” written by Eve Black and her experience in being the sole survivor of a fatal attack on her family by the serial killer The Nothing Man. The second is told by Jim Doyle, who is in fact The Nothing Man (this is not a spoiler, it is revealed immediately) and his reaction and his side of the story as he reads “The Nothing Man”. Got that?
It took me a few chapters to get into the story and to get the hang of the concept, but once I did, this book just took off for me. I was hooked and could not put the book down. This was the first book I have read by Ryan Howard, but it will definitely not be my last.
Thank you to Blackstone Publishing for my copy of this book via Edelweiss.
An absolute page turner! I could not put it down and read late into the night.
It will still haunt you long after you finish reading The Nothing Man.
I’d heard a lot of good things about this book and had ungenerously attributed it to the author’s charisma and the success of her two prior books but I was blown away. Totally. This book grabs you by the lapels and doesn’t let go. The cover is perfect and that in itself is an Easter egg so I won’t give it away. And the end! Did not see that coming. Narrated by two of my favorite actors, the listen was a delight. Who knew John Keating could be so diabolical?
I enjoyed it. It kept me guessing! A good read.
I just finished The Nothing Man by Catherine Ryan Howard. All I can say is WOW!
The Nothing Man follows a retired serial killer as he reads the newly released true crime book written about himself by his only surviving victim – 12 year old Eve Black, now an adult. I read a lot of psychological thrillers and I find that they often follow similar patterns. But The Nothing Man was original and so so creepy. It had me checking the doors and jumping at small sounds. Highly recommend.
An excellent twist on the serial killer theme
All the cliches that I find difficult to believe when I read them in reviews are true about this book. It was impossible for me to out down after the first few paragraphs, simply because of the marvelous quality of the writing. Then I got trapped by the suspense and just kept turning pages. This author definitely jumped onto my list of favorites, and I have a very selective favorite list.
This was so good that I immediately read two more of her books and will start another tomorrow. It keeps you guessing to the end, but it all makes sense, too. Fascinating.
Gripping, beautifully written, and genuinely chilling, The Nothing Man had me from page one. Simply stellar.
The Nothing Man is the most original and chilling thriller I’ve read in a long time, and is perfect for fans of Serial and The Fall.
Expertly crafted — storytelling at its best.
A book to steal your waking hours and haunt your sleeping ones. Chilling and brilliant.
The queen of high-concept crime fiction strikes again: this is the first novel I’ve read that really captures the chills and twists of the true crime that obsesses us. Catherine Ryan Howard has always been thrillingly good at what she does but she’s just getting better and better with every book.
I was truly blown away and couldn’t read it fast enough. I can’t shower it with enough praise. Terrifying, brilliantly plotted, and extremely satisfying.
Whip-smart, thrilling, and utterly compelling.
Utterly compelling, completely original, The Nothing Man will be the standout novel for 2020. This is a book you won’t forget as Catherine Ryan Howard brings crime writing to a new level.
Wow! I have had toothache this week and thank goodness because how else would I have been able to ignore the rest of my life while I devoured this book? With an original structure, The Nothing Man is the story of a serial killer who, twenty years after he stopped his crime spree, comes across a book all about him – written by the sole survivor of his last attack. We read the book as Jim/The Nothing Man does and with him are drawn into the hubbub around its publication. When its author holds a local book signing, Jim is compelled to attend…
I enjoyed every minute of this book. Well-paced, strong characters, super writing. I’m telling all my friends to read it.
The Nothing Man is such an amazing read. I also listened to the audio book which was nothing short of fascinating. This thriller was written in a very unique voice and perspective – a memoir true crime sequence story within this gripping thriller novel with each chapter ending in a cliff hanger. u2063

WOW WOW WOW WOW!!!!!
Of the books I’ve read this year, this has shot to the top of my list as THE BEST. “Page turner” does not even begin to describe how well written, suspenseful and original this book is.
