The holiday season can’t be over soon enough for John Hall. His ex-boyfriend emptied the bank accounts and ran off with his personal trainer months earlier leaving John unable to pay his creditors. Now he’s forced to close the movie theater he owns, a bad end to a bad year. Gay, single and closer to fifty than forty, John doesn’t see a lot of hope in his future. In the dark of night, he wonders … wonders if staying afloat is worth the effort.
Chance Allsop made a promise to his dying mother he hopes he doesn’t regret. Ten months after her death he’s finally in Skagit Washington, visiting the old movie theater where his parents met and fell in love decades ago. The whole thing seems like a lark until he lays eyes on the handsome owner. With his mother’s spirit at his back Chance fully intends to win John Hall’s heart.

I loved this feel good story, which although set at Christmas, is a lovely read for any time of year. I also appreciated that the MCs John and Chance are a little older as I enjoy reading about older characters finding love. Although this is part of a series, it can be read and enjoyed as a standalone but I would recommend the series as it’s a fabulous read.
John and Chance are very different characters, but both nice guys. I loved how Chance is determined to win John right from the first moment they meet, and his parents’ romance in the past drives his hope for his own HEA. It’s understandable why John is hesitant to trust and open his heart again, considering what he’s been through. I liked that his ex does make an appearance and shows just how shallow he is.
As a movie buff I loved all the movie theatre setting, and references. Perfect for a Christmas story. I loved the glimpses of other Skagit locals, and the supporting cast were great. The kitten’s eventual name—not Cat Two!—made me smile, and it was a character in its own right, and did a great job playing cupid. I loved Edmund and hadn’t realised he has his own book so will have to grab a copy to read now as I want to make sure he gets his own HEA.
Highly recommended and hit the spot nicely.
I love a Christmas story with all the feels, and I also love MCs that are a bit more mature.
