THE NO. 1 LADIES’ DETECTIVE AGENCY – Book 1Fans around the world adore the best-selling No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series and its proprietor, Precious Ramotswe, Botswana’s premier lady detective. In this charming series, Mma Ramotswe—with help from her loyal associate, Grace Makutsi—navigates her cases and her personal life with wisdom, good humor, and the occasional cup of tea. This first … of tea.
This first novel in Alexander McCall Smith’s widely acclaimed The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series tells the story of the delightfully cunning and enormously engaging Precious Ramotswe, who is drawn to her profession to “help people with problems in their lives.” Immediately upon setting up shop in a small storefront in Gaborone, she is hired to track down a missing husband, uncover a con man, and follow a wayward daughter. But the case that tugs at her heart, and lands her in danger, is a missing eleven-year-old boy, who may have been snatched by witchdoctors.
The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency received two Booker Judges’ Special Recommendations and was voted one of the International Books of the Year and the Millennium by the Times Literary Supplement.

This is the best series you will ever read. Uplifting and restoring your faith in mankind.
Good book to own and re-read.
This book is calming to read. I really like learning about another culture and would be happy to refer to myself as ” traditionally built”!
Loved the chickens coming in the office if the door is left open!
Precious Ramotswe decided to open up a Detective agency when her father passed. She takes on cases that involve a missing father, con artists, cheating husbands and more. As each lead unfolds the reader is taken into a life more simplistic then the hustle and bustle of the modern world. This was a good read but was different then what I expected.
Such a delight to read. The characters are so endearing. The mysteries are simple but clever. I want to visit Botswana. I suggest you listen to the audio book for at least one in this series. I enjoy the books so much more now that I know how words are pronounced and have the cadence of the language.
Enter a world of terribly polite but enormously engaging characters in a place most of us only get to dream about. Loved the characters and the story. Totally recommend this book!!
This book, indeed the entire series, is an affectionate rendering of life in a land and culture of which most of us have no experience though it gently reminds us that human frailties and generosity of spirit are gifts universally held.
I’ve read several in this series, and thoroughly enjoy them. The setting and premise of the books is very unusual, which contribute to their enjoyment. The characters are warm, and the situations make for an interesting read. I recommend it / them.
It’s delightful
This book got you from the very beginnytje author built the character extremely well. As you were reading it fit together perfectly. You learned so much about the Counyof Africa along with the mysteries that she was solving. You could not figuythem all out at first; one in paryuntil the end. The ending was fantastic. There are 19 books in this series, I would like to start reading some of them.
I like all of the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency books. The main character is great!
Love this series!
Love this whole series. Great characters. A wonderful view into a very different culture with both their best and worst charecters. Seems informed and authentic.
This is the story of Precious Ramotswe who opens up the first ladies detective agency in the country. Precious was drawn to helping people, and when her father dies, and leaves her with enough money to start a business, this is just what she does. She gets work almost immediately – tracking down a missing husband, a con man, and even someone’s daughter. But her most serious case – one she never actually takes money for, but wants to complete – is a missing 11 year old boy.
Throughout the cases, we learn about Precious’ life growing up – the loss of her mother and father, a failed marriage, and the loss of her own child. All interwoven into the story of her ability to find people and discover the truth.
I have to admit, the first 50 pages into this book, I wasn’t sure I was going to keep going. I found it light and fun from the beginning, but I wasn’t sure it was supposed to be. The story is very disjointed in the beginning – jumps from her opening this detective agency back into the past of her father without giving you much warning. But I was encouraged by the people who loved this book to keep going, so I did.
And I wasn’t disappointed. In the end, I loved it. It is a very short book, so a very quick read, and if I wasn’t in the middle of a challenge, I would pick up the other books in the series immediately. Precious is a wonderful character that you fall in love with. She is kind, and smart, and well liked in the community. There is even an edge of humor to the book which will make you smile. And the ending is just lovely.
If you are like me, and wonder “what is happening” when you start this book – don’t put it down. Keep going. I promise you will be rewarded.
An oldie but goodie….a wonderful read!!
Delightful
Love this series!!!!!! Such a fun yet wise read.
A most excellent book. In fact, the entire series is absolutely enchanting!! I read every single one, and was never once disappointed. When I finish one of the books, I’m really down because I’m going to miss all the characters so badly. I heartily recommend this book…………and ALL the other books in the series. You won’t be sorry. I wish there were 10 STARS to give instead of just 5!!!!!!!!
A lot of fun!
