THE NO. 1 LADIES’ DETECTIVE AGENCY – Book 1Fans around the world adore the best-selling No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series and its proprietor, Precious Ramotswe, Botswana’s premier lady detective. In this charming series, Mma Ramotswe—with help from her loyal associate, Grace Makutsi—navigates her cases and her personal life with wisdom, good humor, and the occasional cup of tea. This first … of tea.
This first novel in Alexander McCall Smith’s widely acclaimed The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series tells the story of the delightfully cunning and enormously engaging Precious Ramotswe, who is drawn to her profession to “help people with problems in their lives.” Immediately upon setting up shop in a small storefront in Gaborone, she is hired to track down a missing husband, uncover a con man, and follow a wayward daughter. But the case that tugs at her heart, and lands her in danger, is a missing eleven-year-old boy, who may have been snatched by witchdoctors.
The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency received two Booker Judges’ Special Recommendations and was voted one of the International Books of the Year and the Millennium by the Times Literary Supplement.

Although I had watched some of the tv series by this name, this is the first book that I have read and I absolutely loved it. Plan to read more!
I love the characters in this book and all of the books of the No. 1 Lady Detective series.
I often found myself smiling as I read this! Plan to read more of his.
Will hook you and you will read whole series ! Plus
I Loved The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency. I’ve read every book in the series more than once. It’s a favorite.
This was a warm and delightful way to get me started with this series of books. The characters are quirky in a sweet way. So very enjoyable. Have a cup of bush tea or whatever and go to a place very far away. The time will fly.
Enjoyed it, loved the TV show. Never been to Africa, but the characters and the fly on the wall feeling like I was in Botswana. Hope to find more of the series on here.
This is Botswana.
I liked it. It is a little different than your ordinary read. Left me wanting to read the next one.
Reading Alexander McCall Smith is always a pleasure, humorous and he understands people well.
This is the first book of a wonderful series that made its author one of my favorites. There is nothing gruesome and no sex or violence in these books, just some wise sayings the main character, Mma. Ramotswe got from her revered, but now “late” (deceased), father, humor, a glimpse of the delightful people of Botswana, the amusing cleverness of Mma. R. as she solves people’s problems, and a reading experience that I always look forward to, whether getting a new book from McCall Smith or rereading an old one. I collect them! Readers can see why he himself loved Botswana. You may come to love it, too. I believe there is still a movie based on this book on YouTube, too, and wish there were more; it seemed very true to the depiction of characters in the series. If anyone likes this book, I recommend they also look into the 44 Scotland St. series by the same author. It is not a detective story, but funnier than the Botswana series.
A nice change of pace, with wonderful characters who you remember long after you have finished the book. Went on to read the rest of the series. Loved them all.
The whole series is packed with charm. The new books are hardly distinguishable from previous ones, but I can’t resist them.
Just not my kind of book.
Fun read.
Great read. Soothing
I have loved every one of the books in this series!
It takes you to an entirely different culture.
This series is mesmerizing and totally charming and fun.
Easy read, mysteries are not complicated. But, the African setting and culture makes it interesting.
