But the case that tugs at her heart, and lands her in danger, is a missing eleven-year-old boy, who may have been snatched by witchdoctors.

I fell in love with the main character. Just think of Africa and a black not very wealthy women who number wish is to be a detective and solve crimes. She makes you laugh and cry as you help her reach her goal. Such interesting read with a character you want to reach out and hug.
Lovely descriptions of Africa and it’s geography, people, animals, and plants. A very capable, insightful woman taking the reins of her own life at a time when that wasn’t the norm, especially in Africa.
I read all of the early books in this series many years ago, and it was this first book in the series that got me hooked. Since I didn’t have a kindle at that point, I had hard copies of maybe the first 12 books in the series – all that had been written up to that point. Then I branched out to other of the author’s series – and they too were good but they weren’t “this” series. It’s been a very long time since then and I decided to put this first book on my kindle. Who knows if I’ll add more. I encourage you to try this book. You too may love the descriptive style of writing. Not a lot of “action” but many wonderful characters, well described.
I fell in love with this series. Wonderful characters, beautiful country and sage advise. The story line is delightful and as soon as I finished the first book I bought the next three which came in a set. Then moved on to book 5.
Simplistic
So refreshing and different. These characters are a delight, and the setting in Botswana is the icing on the cake! This is a fun and easy read.
Having been to Africa I found this right on with the characters.
This series became a favorite because they are mostly gentle, character driven stories. There is always an intrigue or mystery to be solved, but the characters and the culture are so well portrayed by the author. I read a lot of intense historical fiction and fantasy. These are leisurely reads and very entertaining.
I love this entire series!
Always a pleasure to visit the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency.
Love #1 Ladies Detective Agency. The main characters are so kind.
I never would have imagined that I would identify so much with a tiny African country and its inhabitants. But the characters grab you right away and the unlikely business idea seems imminently reasonable. Alexander McCall Smith can really write!
A fun read.
Delightful as well as is the entire series
I read this book several years ago. It was very good in all sorts of different ways; descriptions of the desert, the food, ethic background! Read several of this series and other books by this author!!
This is just the first in this delightful series. Great stories and lovable characters!
This is a great little series. Mma Ramotswe has a great way of looking at the twists and turns of life.
A strong woman but working in the real world with “traditional” attitudes.
This series of books is terrific! Light, fun, easy to read and very entertaining, especially if you’ve visited small villages in Africa particularly Botswana. Loved every minute of it!
One of the best series I’ve ever read. I’ve bought and read every book in the series and love them all.
