John Milton is a former assassin for the British government. He is a ronin, trying to atone for his past sins by offering his services to those people who have no-one else to whom they can turn.
Milton is keeping a low profile in London when he meets Eddie Fabian. Fabian confesses that he is considering suicide, and that the reason for his depression was the abuse that he suffered as a child. … a child. Milton offers to help, but, before he can, Eddie is found dead in circumstances that Milton considers suspicious. And then events take a turn that no-one could have anticipated…
Milton’s attempted good deed becomes a quest to unveil corruption at the highest levels of government and murder at the dark heart of the criminal underworld. Milton is pulled back into the game, and that’s going to have serious consequences for everyone who crosses his path.

This book was one of the better ones in the series but they are ALL GOOD. Start at the beginning and build your relationship with Milton and the author. You can see how they both develop. Plus there are novellas and tie-in books as well.
The character of John Milton is so tragic as he goes through life trying to make amends for his former life. I look forward to each book I read in the series.
I really like all of the books I have read in this series. Dawson is a great author and has a great way with a story!
One of the best John Milton stories!
I’ve been reading Dawson for some time now, and I love his John Milton Series, but he has others, like Beatrix Rose, that I’m looking forward to starting.
All his books are first class thrillers. Not to be missed.
The Ninth Step is another action packed John Milton saga. You can call him the English version of Jack Reacher with a twist. He is trying to reconcile his past deeds by helping others. All the while trying to stay sober.
I am a John Milton fan and a Mark Dawson fan. I read The Ninth Step in one sitting and did not want it to end. Mark’s characters are always realistic and I become invested in loving or hating them.
Thanks for another great one, Mark.
More John Milton- solid and enjoyable but not exceptional
The best word to describe the characters in this series is “genuine”. Each has a specific motivation that humanizes the character. The situations in which they find themselves are incredibly real as well. One of my all time favorites. Keep ’em coming!
I love this new writer to me.
Always try new authors!!
Very good!!
John Milton is a great character.
I love Mark Dawson’s characters.
drags, not as engaging as the previous ones
Excellent writing, I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading more by Mark Dawson.
I love these books. Okay, they’re predictable but Dawson always tells a good story along the way. John Milton has real depth. I miss Beatrix!
Typical Mark Dawson’s book! Never stopping action. Very thrilling and intelligent plot!
Another great John Milton story.
This book was a “fast” read for me – hard to put down – and the first I have read in the series (new Kindle). I liked the hero, John Milton. I liked that he has vulnerabilities he is fighting to overcome but that he is still strong and wanting to help others. The story was exciting. I hope to read other stories about John Milton.
I’ve read all in this series and enjoyed every one. These are great mysteries with real characters with flaws we can all relate too. Good read.
