Tricky, like a fox.As a kitsune—a fox shifter—I have to be to survive.Sometimes it seems like the whole world wants me dead.Ironic, considering that’s my job—to kill people.Thea Hunt, professional assassin at your service. But that’s not my only vice.I’m also attracted to the darkest denizens of the supernatural world, the men I should run from instead of fall for. Men like Mikhail, the leader of … Men like Mikhail, the leader of the assassins’ guild, Bennett, the local alpha wolf, and Nix, the skinwalking coyote that’s likely to bring the entire shifter community to their knees. And then there are my exes—Riot and Fin.
Somebody’s cursing old gods, stripping shifters of their ability to change. And a trapped shifter doesn’t last long without losing their mind. Nix knows; Mikhail wants me to kill him; Bennett wants me dead. Oh, and Riot and Fin are determined to make my life a living hell.
As the youngest kitsune to ever get nine tails, I should be able to trick my way out of this one, right?
Right?!
THE NINE is the first book in the FOXFIRE BURNING series. It is a full-length reverse harem urban fantasy/paranormal romance with a spunky kitsune (fox shifter) main character and her six love interests: a vampire, a werewolf, a coyote shifter, and a few mysteries. This book includes cursing, violence, steamy scenes, and a whole lot of magic.

Eh. The writing style is decent, but I just felt the feel of the book was so incredibly unfocused. I understand there is a lot going on between 5 (6?) potential relationships and the main story plot, but that does not mean it is time to talk about wine or pot or bubble baths. Those are the types of things that get mentioned in passing, right? They shouldn’t get their own page of talking about it unless the thing is has significant significance. (yeah, I’m super eloquent right now…)
I have passed on other books by C. M. Stunich, but this one looked so fun and I wanted to read about the foxes….I feel a bit let down by my expectations.
If you are looking for something new and don’t mind a character that isn’t afraid to speak her mind then I recommend you give this book a try.
This book is filled with action, spunk, magic, and a great start to a harem. While this book doesn’t exactly start as a reverse harem instead we get to see in build into a reverse harem all through ups and downs and heart pounding moments and plenty of sexual tension between Thea and her harem. This reverse harem does have some F/F and M/F.
I absolutely loved this book! Action kicked off right from the first pages which kept me completely entertained. I had such a hard time putting this book down. I remember knowing I had to get up early the next morning just to get stuff done, and how much I was so sad to have to stop reading the book even just for a little while. I take my kindle with me pretty much everywhere so I made sure to stop and read more of the book every chance I got.
I was completely excited to read this book, Kitsune are one of my absolute favorite creatures ever. I was NOT disappointed in the least, but then again Tate James and C.M. Stunich are both amazingly talented and creative as hell authors. Both of them are great at creating new worlds that work well, fantastic characters, extremely kick a$$ female leads and story arcs that keep the reader coming back for more. So it was absolutely no surprise that this books is as amazing as it is. I heard that this wasn’t a traditional RH but after reading it, I have to disagree, Revel is hands down AWESOME and has zero interest in men, so I find it comparable to having all men. Mikhail is freakin dreamy, I love those bad boys with secret soft sides, which is why I loved so many of these characters, they are all kind of that way. Fin is also up there on my yumm list (fanning face) and though I really liked Riot (freaking awesome name) his words and actions broke my heart. I loved that Tate and C.M. were able to not only introduce all these characters but give them personalities and background and I look forward to more. Thea is a bada$$ female, she’s a Kitsune (suddenly a fox shifter), she’s sneaky, cunning, smart and crafty, but she’s also strong, and a bit fearless. She constantly finds herself in tricky situations, complications and misunderstandings, she might need help to slip her way out of, around and/or through, as well as having her personal and professional life start to mingle a bit. Things get difficult and she needs to learn to juggle it all as well as find solutions to her problems. This was an action packed, funny, and all around enjoyable and entertaining read!
Here comes nothing. Okay so I loved the books from both authors individually but seems like their joint creations just don’t work for me as well. It’s a shame really because this book was one of my most anticipated reads of this spring. Unfortunately it was a serious crash and burn for me.
But before I start let’s take a moment to admire this phenomenal cover. It is so good and eye-catching and also representative. I just love.
This book took me days to read, four that’s a freaking long time even if I consider that this is on the longer side of the spectrum. It actually could be a positive thing regarding the book because Reverse harem stories tend to be on the shorter side but in this case there was so many things in it that I didn’t like that I felt like it would never end.
Anyway let’s start with what I liked. I loved the world building and the whole concept behind the book. It’s just a shame that the actual plot was missing a cohesive theme that could connect the possibilities. Still the world building was awesome and I just loved how the shifters were described with having their ears and tails even in human form. It reminded me some of the anime I watched when I was younger. Also the whole Kitsune shifter/ Asian representation was a really great and appealing idea for me. I even liked the idea of having an assassin as a main character who has to solve a huge shifter-wide problem. It just had so much promise to it. However the problem was that the actual storyline barely focused on this side of the events. Yes, it came into play here and there and also it was the problem that started the snowball but along the way it got lost.
Another thing I liked was the fact that they put a girl love interest into the mix of the reverse harem. It was just an interesting thing to do and one that is rarely done. It’s true though that it’s going to take a delicate balance to make the dynamic work but I’m curious how the authors going to work it. And unfortunately that is it.
Here comes the negative side of things. The biggest and most glaring problem with this book was Thea, the main character. Sorry but I simply hated her. I don’t know when I read last about such a dense, inadequate, shallow, selfish and materialistic character. She was just horrible. I mean she is supposed to be an assassin but she doesn’t present one personality trait that would prove her as a good one. She makes so stupid decisions, I mean she explains the consequences and the right choices then goes and does the complete opposite because she sees herself as ‘special’. Well girl you are especially stupid. And not just that but in the middle of a life of dead situation her biggest concerns and the most important thing in her mind is her attraction towards her opponent who tries to torture and kill her. Masochistic much?? Sorry but I just couldn’t get on board with her. She is annoying and foulmouthed as hell.
And the thing is that I had a problem not only with her character but with her supposed love interest as well. Neither of them was really sympathetic for me. They are all a**holes. There is Fin, who tries to redeem himself by the end of the story but he is really manipulating but puny at the same time. Or Mik, Thea boss, whom Thea has a phenomenal chemistry with but for some unnamed reason he treats her in a degrading way all the way. Or Bennet, the sociopathic alpha, who likes to torture and kill his partners. Nix, a psychotic, creepy skin walker with megalomaniac tendencies. Revel, the only woman who is a bit of a predatory fox, and I’m not so sure about her intentions yet, she was a bit fishy. And lastly there is Riot, one of Thea exes, who is overly jealous but I’mnot sure about him yet because he exits the picture quite early.
So yes they are a strange bunch and I see some potential in Riot and maybe Mik but the rest of them are bleh.
The story is really graphic, full of sexual innuendos and even encounters and foul language but as for the reverse harem relationship in it they are in a stale mate because there is a lot of denial and passive aggressive vibes going on between them. It was strange.
Then there was the ending which confused me a bit, there was a big fight at the end which leads to an insanely complicating cliffhangerish ending but personally I just couldn’t follow it. Anyway I probably going to read the next book as well when it comes out (which is not going to be now because to my knowledge both of the authors are kind of busy with their other series) because the basic idea intrigues me a lot and because I love the authors but if that one doesn’t improve then I guess I’m going to give upon it.
Supernatural. UF. Rh. MMMMMFF. 3 fox, 1 skinwalker, 1 wolf, 1 jaguar. Badass, assassin, bitch, powerful kitsune heroine. Thea goes home to get her recently acquired ninth tail bonded. She has an important job to do and can’t afford to go crazy. When appealing the bonding Thea’s ex-mate motions for the bond to be delayed, to find him a suitable mate for him. The elders approve the delay and take Thea’s magic. No magic and a species to save, what is a kitsune to do? This is not your everyday Insta romance you may be use to. I was on edge the entire time it seemed. I love the hate\attraction that’s going on. This is my first adult UF Th and I’m in love!
