Back when Harry Bosch was just a rookie homicide detective, he had an inspiring mentor who taught him to take the work personally and light the fire of relentlessness for every case. Now that mentor, John Jack Thompson, is dead, and his widow gives Bosch a murder book, one that Thompson took with him when he left the LAPD twenty years before — the unsolved killing of a troubled young man.
Bosch takes the murder book to Detective Renée Ballard and asks her to help him discover what about this crime lit Thompson’s fire all those years ago. As she begins her inqueries — while still working her own cases on the midnight shift — Ballad finds aspects of the initial investigation that just don’t add up.
The bond between Bosch and Ballard tightens as they become a formidable investigation team. And they soon arrive at a disturbing question: Did Thompson steal the murder book to work the case in retirement, or to make sure it never got solved?
Written with the intense pacing and masterful suspense that have made Michael Connelly “the hard-boiled fiction master of our time” (NPR), The Night Fire continues the unofficial partnership of two fierce detectives determined not to let the fire with burn out.

Harry Bosch is the greatest character in crime solving. It’s hard to believe that pairing him with Renee Ballard has made him even better. 2 great detectives in a compelling story. This is a great read.
The finest mystery writer of our time. Michael Connelly keeps the great Harry Bosch going on after all these years by pairing him up with the fascinating Renee Ballard. I’ve read (and enjoyed) every Michael Connelly book.
Bosch never disappoints. Bosch and Ballard team up to work a cold case while each continue to work multiple separate cases. But nothing appears as it should and the twists keep coming to the very end.
Great book
Harry Bosch is the best. Connelly is one of the best story tellers.
I would gladly read anything from this author. My “go to”.
All of his books are the best. One of my favorite authors. Read all of his series and am never disappointed.
Another excellent book by Michael Connelly. This one not only paired Detective Renee Ballard and retired Detective Harry Bosch again, but Mickey Haller too! I really enjoy reading about Ballard and Bosch working on cold cases. In this one there are actually three cases that all end up tying together. Ballard’s arson case from her Late Show shift, Bosch’s cold case of a young man shot twenty plus years ago, and a judge’s murder that Haller cleared his client of, but Bosch wants to investigate further. It’s so interesting how Connelly has weaves the cases together.
Michael Connelly definitely can write crime fiction that is fast paced and keeps you riveted to your chair as you keep reading to see what happens next.
At the end of this one, Harry is already working on the next cold case for the two of them.
Connelly writes a good book, but I still like the original Raymond Chandler versions.
Good to see these two back together again. Found the plot interesting.
Love all things Harry Bosch.
Great charcters. A real page turner. Twists and turns. Surprise ending. Loved it!!
Bosch, Haller, and Ballard are all in one book. A great deep dive into the underbelly of LA.
Though I expected more from this book, I quite enjoyed the collaboration between Bosch, Ballard, and Haller. The book was too wordy in places and contained more descriptive details than really necessary. As usual, however, Bosch and Ballard, with a little bit of input from Haller, got the bad guys! I look forward to the next installment in the Bosch-Ballard partnership.
Michael Connelly’s remarkable ability is on display once again in this outstanding work. His teaming of Bosch and Ballard is seamless and flat-out brilliant.
As usual the story skeleton is police procedural. Within that structure Connelly reveals telling and meaningful personal elements making his characters deeply engaging. Plotting is superb and content seemingly effortlessly authentic.
The young female detective and the old veteran Bosch are a dynamic study in contrast yet so similar in their dogged and selfless dedication to the victims of badness. As Bosch says – Either everyone counts, or no one counts.
I recommend wholeheartedly!
Bosch is always great, but he has help on this case from Detective Renee Ballard. She’s a great addition to the Bosch storyline.
Michael Connelly never fails to entertain and continues to build his characterization of Harry Bosch.
Like all french fries should be McDonald’s french fries, all books should be by Michael Connelly.
If you enjoy a good mystery, The Night Fire will not disappoint. I have loved every Michael Connelly book, he has a way of really capturing my attention and holding it till the last page, every time.
Couldn’t put it down
