Deborah Jenkins pulls her coat around her for the short walk home in the pouring rain. But she never makes it home that night. And she is never seen again…
Four years later, an abandoned baby girl is found wrapped in dirty rags on a doorstep. An anonymous phone call urges the police to run a DNA test on the baby. But nobody is prepared for the results.
The newborn belongs to Deborah. She’s still alive…
THE GRIPPING THRILLER EVERYONE’S TALKING ABOUT – if you like Lisa Gardner, Robert Bryndza or Clare Mackintosh, you will absolutely love this. A completely unputdownable page-turner with an ending that will blow your mind.

I really enjoyed this book, particularly as it was set close to where I live. A woman has been missing for four years. Her family cannot really move on, the police cannot crack the case. A hooded figure keeps being spotted in the area. Is he connected?
This author has crafted a really good thriller. The characters are cleverly created too. A grieving husband, wracked with guilt. The police officer, whose own life is in turmoil, just adds to the dark ingredients. Not too fast, or too slow – the story builds nicely, or nastily depending on your point of view. There are some harrowing scenes, that grip the reader as the pages are turning. I could see this being made into a movie, or mini-series, such was the subject matter. Really impressive stuff.
I cannot wait for the next instalment.
I couldn’t put The Next Girl down. Really finished it in one sitting. This book is mind blowing. It keeps most of it’s secrets until the very end. I literally did not have a clue who the protagonist was. If you like to read all day, you will love this book. The evil is palpable.
This book introduces DI Gina Hart, a cop with a brain and a past. It begins with a cold case that suddenly becomes red hot and the tension doesn’t let up until the final page. Highly recommended.
needed an editor
This book was good but not great. I did not like the main characters, and had a hard time midway through and wanted just to hurry up and finish. It was not a book I lingered over or thought about once it was over; it was just okay.
Compelling story. I couldn’t put it down.
Did I just get Josie Quinn’d??? I really enjoyed this opening series for DI Gina Harte! I love a great crime series, even better if the heroin is a female inspector/detective with a traumatic backstory that slowly but surely unravels. The Next Girl was exactly that!
I’m looking forward to book 2 in the series!
I couldn’t really get into this book.
Great reading kept me on edge
Enjoyed reading it.
A great read, could not put it down.
I enjoyed the history in the story. I lived in San Francisco for a while and could visualize parts of the areas vividly as the story progressed. I enjoyed the baddie history in the story because I already had some knowledge of the rowdy tales of the city’s past.
Tense and exciting tale. Very captivating and a real page turner.
Great plot, characters and a real page turner. Loved it
Not the best writing. A little dramatic and heavy-handed. A bit predictable.
Like this one!!!
I liked the premise of the book, but the ending was disappointing. Felt they left a couple of the story lines just hanging.
This was a really fast reading and somewhat suspenseful book. The subject matter of abuse was disturbing, and hard to read at times. but you hoped the end would be positive. There were some very twisted characters.
So I give this 3 1/2 stars. I really didn’t find this to be the gripping thriller that the book claims. I figured out who the kidnapper was as soon as you meet them. I did find this book very heartbreaking for everyone in this story. I personally think that Gail should have faced her demons after 20 plus years and not have it still control her life like it does. I would have liked more at the end with Luke and Debbie.

The Next Girl by Carla Kovach
Detective Gina Harte #1
D.I. Gina Harte works hard to bring justice to those who have been abused. She has worked hard to get where she is and takes her job seriously. She has never told anyone about her ill-fated marriage or why she might actually be happier without her spouse than she was with him. Her daughter doesn’t understand and often gives her grief for not showing any grief.
In this first book of the series, mostly police procedural, a woman has gone missing for four years, sudden information indicates she may still be alive and in the area and the hunt is on to find her. Gina’s potential love interest, her family, her colleagues and other issues in her life are mentioned.
This was well written if a bit abrupt toward the end. I would have liked to hear more about why the abductor did what he did, how he managed to get away with it and wanted to know how the family managed later in time – perhaps an epilogue? I am interested in reading the next book in the series and hope that Gina will open up to her daughter so their relationship can perhaps improve. I am not sure how believable I found the story but did find it entertaining.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC – This is my honest review.
