Abby looks forward to meeting the family who just moved in across the street—until she realizes they’re the one couple who could expose her deepest secretsAfter a night of fun back in 1992, Abby is responsible for a car crash that kills her beloved brother. It’s a mistake she can never forgive, so she pushes away Liam, the man she loves most, knowing that he would eventually hate her for what … eventually hate her for what she’s done, the same way she hates herself.
Twenty years later, Abby’s husband, Nate, is also living with a deep sense of guilt. He was the driver who first came upon the scene of Abby’s accident, the man who pulled her to safety before the car erupted in flames—the man who could not save her brother in time. It’s this guilt, this regret, that binds them together. They understand each other. Or so Nate believes.
In a strange twist of fate, Liam moves into the neighborhood with his own family, releasing a flood of memories that Abby has been trying to keep buried all these years. Abby and Liam, in a complicit agreement, pretend never to have met, yet cannot resist the pull of the past—nor the repercussions of the terrible secrets they’ve both been carrying…

In 1992, after Abby’s younger brother, Tom, died in a car accident caused by her driving drunk, she was overwhelmed by guilt, often punishing herself for living when he died. Now, fast forward to the present when Abby is happily married to Noah and raising their 16 year old daughter, Sarah. But, what happens when new neighbors, Liam, Nancy, and their 17 year old son, Zac, move in next door? Why did Liam react so oddly when Nate mentioned his wife’s name? What could he be hiding?
Alternating between the past and the present, secret after secret was revealed in this can’t miss, twisty, domestic suspense story. I read it in less than a day because I couldn’t put it down!
“Why does life have to be so bloody complicated?”
Lastly, I very much enjoyed taking a virtual trip back to the 90s to again experience the dawning of cell phones and email.
Location: England
Sometimes the past just catches up with you and then you lie about the past. Such is the case when Abby and Nate notice the new neighbors moving in next door. While Abby is out with their daughter Nate goes next door to help them move in. Sarah and Liam are emptying the van along with their son. You guessed it a teenage son about the same age as Abby and Nate’s. Then slowly the past comes slowly to light when the introductions are made and Nate asked Liam if he might know his wife since they lived in the same town. Liam denies it instead of coming clean that he does know Abby. You will be even more surprised when Abby comes over to meet the neighbors and is shocked to look into the eyes of the man she once loved. You are drawn into the past as the stories (please note the plural) are slowly and tensely reveled to the reader. A great psychological fiction.
I just this moment finished The Neighbors by Hannah Mary McKinnon
I’m totally speechless and literally yelled “Oh My Gawwwd!” out loud. There is a line near the end of the book that explains my feels right now, “I don’t know what to do with this information. I can’t —”
I am in awe of the writing, the complex layers of storytelling, the gripping thrill of this domestic masterpiece, the multiple viewpoint characters.
This book is brilliant. A devine treat of twists that get you in the heart and gut. Whewie.
Thank you, Hannah McKinnon. *mind blown*

Twenty years ago Abby was involved in a fiery crash that would forever change her life. Now, Abby is spending her life floating – married with a daughter and living in the suburbs. Little did she know, the neighbors moving in next door would be the start of her demise. THE NEIGHBORS will pull you in and drag you down the long, thrilling web of lies and betrayal. Just when you think you know what comes next you’re found spiraling through another set of twists. THE NEIGHBORS is an emotional, gripping, page turner that will leave you breathless and hanging on the edge of your seat until the end. You will question everything you ever thought about your neighbors?
I have enjoyed Ms. McKinnon’s writing style ever since I read “Sister Dear,” and “The Neighbors” is no exception.
Have you ever wondered what would happen if your ex moved in next door? Such is the case of Abby and Nate. Abby thought she had done a good job of burying her past and all the secrets that went along with it. Can you imagine having to act like you have just met your neighbor for the first time? Yet, there are some “tells” that are so subtle they start to add up and your spouse starts to become suspicious but thinks he or she must be imagining things.
Two marriages on the brink of collapse. Teen love. A wife wanting the affection she wasn’t getting from her husband. Lies, deceit, affairs, guilt, tragic accidents, a mother and daughter reconciling, troubled relationships between mothers and daughters, animosity between neighbors, the truth finally coming out, a daughter learning how to bury her own truth. I have to admit, I did figure out a couple of things while reading this one, but I found it to be a good read that kept my attention.
